The complex structures and important biological functions of Strychnos alkaloids have attracted a great deal of attention from synthetic chemists. Herein, we describe the concise asymmetric total syntheses of the Strychnos alkaloids, (-)-dehydrotubifoline, (-)-tubifoline, and (-)-tubifolidine, as well as the formal total synthesis of (-)-strychnine. Our strategy features the construction of the common tetracyclic pyrrolo[2,3-d]carbazole structure using regioselective Fischer indolization on unsymmetrical cyclic ketones and late-stage functionalization for divergent synthesis. We developed a st

The composition of the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of the leaves of Strychnos spinosa (Loganiaceae) was analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Out of twenty-two compounds identified in the oil, the main constituents were palmitic acid (34.3%), linalool (16.0%), and (E)-phytol (6.7%). Since the leaves of this plant are used in African traditional medicine to treat African trypanosomiasis, we evaluated the in vitro activity of the essential oil as well as of 15 of its components on Trypanosoma brucei brucei bloodstream forms and on mammalian cells (J774 murine macrophages) to evaluate the

Strychnine poisoning is a rare method of deliberate self-harm in adults. Poisoning with strychnine leaves is a rare form of strychnine poisoning, as the usual plant parts used are nuts, bark, and seeds. Although the common cardiac manifestations of strychnine positioning include tachycardia and hypertension, we report a patient with mild strychnine poisoning with bradycardia.

Emerging RNA viruses continue to pose major global health threats, underscoring the urgent need for broad-spectrum antiviral agents. Usambarensine, a bis-indole alkaloid isolated from Strychnos usambarensis, has historically been investigated for its antimalarial and antihelminthic properties, but its antiviral potential has remained unexplored. In this study, usambarensine was isolated through bioguided fractionation and structurally confirmed by HPTLC, HPLC-UV, FT-IR, MS/MS, and NMR. The compound was first evaluated against representatives of three major RNA virus families: Coronaviridae (SA

Strychnos nux-vomica L. (Loganiaceae) is famous for its monomeric alkaloid content, such as strychnine, a convulsant poison. The stem bark of the tree is traditionally used to treat intermittent fever in South East Asia. In various studies, it appeared that dimeric indolo-monoterpenic alkaloids possess a promising activity on Plasmodium falciparum. Three bisindolomonoterpenic alkaloids together with strychnochrysine, previously identified in the root bark of S. nux-vomica, were isolated from the stem bark. The structures of these compounds were established using NMR spectroscopy and mass spect

Methanol extract of Strychnos potatorum Linn. seeds (SPSE) was evaluated for its diuretic activity in Wistar albino rats. The SPSE was administered at the graded doses of 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg body weight. The parameters which were taken into account during the experimental on each rat were: total urine volume (corrected for water intake during the test period), body weight before and after the experiment, and the concentration of sodium, potassium, and chloride ions in urine. The total urine volumes of the SPSE (600 mg/kg)-treated rats were evaluated nearly two and half fold then compared w

Inflammation, pain, and fever cause discomfort and misery and lower the productivity and quality of life among the victims. The severe effects of synthetic drugs used to treat these conditions necessitate the need for alternative therapeutic agents. Strychnos henningsii is used in folkloric medicine to manage inflammation, pain, and fever, although scientific evidence to validate these claims is lacking. This study aimed to determine the in vivo anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antipyretic potential of the methanol extract of S. henningsii. In the anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and

Malaria, a disease known for thousands of years and caused by parasites of the Plasmodium genus, continues to cause many deaths throughout the world today, particularly due to the emergence of parasite resistance to the current therapeutic arsenal. Plants of the Strychnos genus, remarkable due to their multiple traditional uses as well as their alkaloid content, are promising candidates to develop new antimalarial treatments. Indeed, previous research on this plant group has shown promising (≤ 5 µg/ml) or good (between 5 and 15 µg/ml) antiplasmodial activities. Using the chloroquine-sensitive

Strychnos pseudoquina St. Hil. is a native plant of the Brazilian Savannah, used in popular medicine to treat a number of conditions. Since it contains large quantities of alkaloids with proven antiulcer activity, we tested the genotoxic potential of crude extracts and fractions containing alkaloids and flavonoids from the leaves of this plant, on Salmonella typhimurium and performed the micronucleus test on peripheral blood cells of mice treated in vivo. The results showed that the methanol extract of the leaves of S. pseudoquina is mutagenic to the TA98 (-S9) and TA100 (+S9, -S9) strains of
