A case of superfetation is reported. A 23 year old gravida 3, para 1, aborta 1 had a D & C and partial left salpingectomy for ruptured left tubal pregnancy. The microscopic examination of the curettings and the left fallopian tube revealed two pregnancies. The tubal pregnancy was obviously older than the intra-uterine pregnancy and the two fertilized eggs had to result from different ovulations.

A 20-year-old primigravida initially diagnosed at 28 weeks to have superfetation in a case of a bicornuate uterus was subsequently found to have uterus pseudo didelphys during a cesarean section at 35 weeks. This type of uterine anomaly with twin gestation has been previously reported in five case reports, but superfetation with such müllerian abnormality has not been previously described.

Difference of age (3 weeks) between twins was established by ultrasound at 10 weeks, and persisted through subsequent echographic surveillance up to delivery at 39 of amenorrhea with twin 39 and 36 weeks old. Only three publications in recent international literature are related to superfoetation. An attempt is made to try to understand superfoetation and to clearly differentiate it from superovulation.

This report describes the first case of superfetation after ovarian stimulation with gonadotrophins and intrauterine insemination (IUI) that were performed in the presence of an undiagnosed tubal pregnancy. Peripheral plasma progesterone levels were studied in pregnant hares. A rise occurred at the beginning of pregnancy, followed by a plateau from Days 10 to 35, and then a drop during the days just before parturition. No significant differences were noted between progesterone levels in pregnancies initiated at the pre-partum oestrus and those from other oestrous periods.
