PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of individualized thirst management in patients after gastric cancer surgery.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in China. Between April and June 2024, 36 postoperative gastric cancer patients experiencing thirst were enrolled as the control group and received conventional care. From July to September 2024, 37 patients were recruited as the experimental group and received a tailored thirst management program. Thirst intensity was assessed via a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), while lip, tongue, and oral …

The cerebellum, a phylogenetically ancient brain region, has long been considered strictly a motor control structure. Recent studies have implicated the cerebellum in cognition, sensation, emotion and autonomic function, making it an important target for further investigation. Here, we show that cerebellar Purkinje neurons in mice are activated by the hormone asprosin, leading to enhanced thirst, and that optogenetic or chemogenetic activation of Purkinje neurons induces rapid manifestation of water drinking. Purkinje neuron-specific asprosin receptor (Ptprd) deletion results in reduced water …

The hormonal changes associated with ageing, the occurrence of other medical condition and the use of medications increases the likelihood of conditions such as hyper- and hypo-natremia. Awareness of the homeostatic changes with age and the relations with disease and drugs will lead better management of fluid disorders in the elderly patient and hopefully a reduction in morbidity and mortality.

Drinking is an activity determined partly by oropharyngeal stimulation and gastrointestinal sensations as well as biochemical changes, and thirst need not be involved. It is sometimes disturbed in mania or depression. Overdrinking (polydipsia) is common in long-stay in-patients, but only gives rise to water intoxication when there is a variable functional renal abnormality such as SIADH causing water retention. In contrast, in affective disorders, disturbance of sodium retention may be seen, possibly representing failure of nervous vascular control as part of the mental illness.

Establishing a differential diagnosis for polyuria and polydipsia during pregnancy can be challenging. We describe a pregnant woman with sev … desmopressin was initiated during admission, leading to complete normalization of diuresis without thirst. Weight, diuresis, plasma/urine sodium, and osmolality were closely monitored. After delivery of a healthy son, desmopressin was discontinued and symptoms resolved spontaneously, with copeptin remaining normal. These findings ruled out primary polyd …

The effects of heat acclimation on water intake and urine output responses to thermal dehydration and other thirst stimuli were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were heat acclimated by continuous exposure to a 34°C environment for at least 6 weeks. Thermal dehydration-induced thirst was brought about by exposing the heat-acclimated rats and control rats housed at 24°C to a 37.5°C environment for 4 h without access to food or water. Heat acclimation reduced evaporative and urinary water losses and the increases in plasma sodium and osmolality during thermal dehydration, which led to a …

Thirst motivates animals to seek fluid and drink it. It is regulated by the central nervous system and arises from neural and chemical signals from the periphery interacting in the brain to stimulate a drive to drink. Our research has focussed on the lamina terminalis and the manner in which osmotic and hormonal stimuli from the circulation are detected by neurons in this region and how that information is integrated with other neural signals to generate thirst. Our studies of osmoregulatory drinking in the sheep and rat have produced evidence that osmoreceptors for thirst exist in the dorsal …

The development of water drinking in response to thirst stimuli was found to be precocious and sequential in the neonatal rat. It was studied in suckling rats with a technique that took advantage of their vigorous consummatory reflexes and minimized appetitive responding. Responsiveness to the following thirst challenges appeared in the suckling rat with a clear timetable: cellular dehydration at 2 days of age, hypovolemia induced by colloid dialysis at 4 days, and beta-adrenergic activation at 6 days. Responsiveness to deprivation from mother's milk was vigorous at the earliest day tested (2 …

A patient with lifelong severe polyuria and polydipsia had normal serum antidiuretic hormone (ADH) levels and responded to water deprivation with a prompt increase in urine osmolality and maintenance of normal plasma osmolality (less than 290 mOsm/kg), despite extreme thirst. When treated with desmopressin acetate and allowed free access to water, she was able to reduce plasma osmolality below 270 mOsm/kg, and her compelling thirst disappeared. The disorder is interpreted to be the result of excessive fluid intake in response to a thirst stimulus that was not inhibited by normal plasma osmolal…

INTRODUCTION: With increased fluid intake and tolvaptan treatment, the growth rate of cysts can be theoretically decelerated in autosomal polycystic kidney disease. In this prospective study, it was planned to evaluate thirst sensation in these patients and the parameters affecting its intensity.
METHODS: Forty-one ADPKD patients on tolvaptan and 40 ADPKD patients not on tolvaptan as the control group were evaluated for thirst distress sensation and intensity. The feeling of thirst and the discomfort caused by excessive fluid intake was assessed with Thirst Distress Scale-HF 12 questions (60/…
