Pathologic tooth migration (PTM) is a common complication of moderate to severe periodontitis and is often the motivation for patients to seek periodontal therapy. In this review of the literature, available information concerning prevalence, etiology, treatment, and prevention of pathologic tooth migration is summarized. Prevalence of PTM among periodontal patients has been reported to range from 30.03% to 55.8%. A survey of the literature regarding chief complaints of periodontal patients support these high prevalence findings. The etiology of PTM appears to be multifactorial. Periodontal bo

OBJECTIVE: To study the mechanism of tooth mesial migration with animal experiment.
METHODS: The upper and lower first molars of Wuzhishan miniature pigs were used as experimental teeth. The mesial migration of experimental teeth was calculated and analysed by measuring the models. Fluorescent mark was used and analysed by injecting tetracycline and xvlenol orange, and histological changes were analyzed.
RESULTS: The lower teeth migrate mesially 0.14 mm and 1.21 mm during 16 weeks, and the upper teeth migrate mesially 1.36 mm and 2.08 mm during 24 weeks. The distal alveolar bones of experime

INTRODUCTION: Injury to the inferior alveolar nerve is a potential complication during the removal of mandibular third molars, with a substantially increased risk when a direct anatomical relationship exists between the tooth roots and the mandibular canal. In such cases, coronectomy offers a surgical alternative that reduces the risk of nerve injury; however, the clinical relevance of postoperative root migration remains incompletely understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed the timing and extent of root migration after coronectomy, examined influencing factors, assessed radiological indica

AIM: Pathologic tooth migration (PTM) has been defined as tooth displacement that occurs when the balance among the factors that maintain physiologic tooth position is disturbed by periodontal disease. The aim of this cross-sectional epidemiological study was to determine the prevalence of pathologic tooth migration among patients with periodontitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Recorded documents of 370 patients (72.4% females, 27.6% males) within the age range of 17 to 70 years (mean 37.77 ± 11.46) were studied. Statistical analysis was carried out using t-test and Chi-square test.
RESULTS: Path

The Blood-Vessel Thrust Theory is a new hypothesis regarding the forces which produce the normal eruption of teeth, and the movement of 'nonerupted' teeth through bone away from their normal position in the jaws. It points out that the flow of blood through the vessels of the dental pulp, and of the tissues surrounding the tooth, must produce hydrodynamic and hydrostatic forces within the blood vessels, and that these forces have a resultant towards the tooth crown, thus causing the tooth to move, crown first, through the bone during normal eruption or abnormal tooth migration.

We report the case of a 3-year-old girl referred to our hospital dentistry service, from a public health centre, due to a 4-week-old swelling in the area of the hard palate, causing displacement of the deciduous tooth and the appearance of an interincisal diastema. The clinical characteristics suggested the possibility of a reactive fibroma and we decided to intervene surgically by means of an excisional biopsy. Histology confirmed the presumptive diagnosis. Prompt referral and early surgical care spontaneously favoured both repositioning of the displaced primary tooth and closure of the diast

BACKGROUND: Parental migration plays a significant role in shaping the health outcomes of left-behind children. However, limited research has been conducted on how parental migration impacts the dental health of these children in China. To address this gap, this study aims to investigate the effects of parental migration on the dental health of left-behind children and explore the underlying mechanisms that contribute to these outcomes.
METHODS: This study utilized data from the first wave of the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS), which included a representative sample of 9,175 junior high

Periodontitis and peri-implantitis are inflammatory diseases caused by periodontal pathogenic bacteria leading to destruction of supporting periodontal/peri-implant tissue. However, the progression of inflammatory process of these two diseases is different. The bacterial biofilm is the source of bacteria during the inflammatory process. As the bacteria migrate down the surface of tooth or titanium implant, the inflammation spreads along with it. Streptococcus mutans has an important role in oral bacterial biofilm formation in early stage biofilm before the microbiota shift to late stage and be

While contemporary periodontics has witnessed the continued emergence of sophisticated techniques to resolve esthetic concerns through various periodontal procedures, frequently the early stages of periodontal diseases are best treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy. This short communication presents a case of reactive positioning of pathologically migrated anterior tooth following non-surgical periodontal therapy.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) play a significant role in bone metabolism. Herein we studied the adaptation of alveolar bone to physiologic tooth drift in young rats deprived of essential fatty acids from birth. Reductions in femur size and trabecular bone volume reflected body growth impairment. Along the alveolar wall, osteoclastic resorption and bone formation were depressed, disrupting the adaptive deformation of the tooth socket to ongoing migration. As a result, the periodontal ligament narrowed considerably, and further adaptation was achieved through root resorption. Essential fatty acid

We described an 11-year follow-up of a patient with a non-syndrome multiple supernumerary teeth who had one extra tooth in the maxilla and four additional premolars in the mandible. Together with an additional distal migration of the second lower right premolar to the ramus of the mandible that also occurred, it comprises a unique combination of conditions that were not previously presented in the literature. We showed the significance of routine X-rays in cases of hyperdontia since the additional teeth may develop later than expected and the patient may not experience any symptoms.

Pathologic tooth migration (PTM), tooth flaring, and severe mobility are frequent clinical problems in stage IV periodontitis and can cause major aesthetic and functional impairment. Conventional correction often requires prolonged interdisciplinary periodontal-orthodontic treatment. This case series introduces the PIANO protocol (Periodontal Immediate Adhesive Nonsurgical Orthorepositioning), a splint-assisted approach combining orthorepositioning with immediate stabilization during step 2 periodontal therapy. Three patients with generalized stage IV, grade C periodontitis, anterior PTM, and

The physiologic tooth position is determined by interactions between the periodontal tissue and occlusal, tongue, and lip forces. Bone destruction resulting from chronic periodontal disease disturbs the equilibrium of these interactive balances, leading to pathologic tooth migration, often requiring multidisciplinary treatment approaches. The present case demonstrates a systematic periodontal-orthodontic-prosthetic treatment for achieving the optimal structural, functional, and esthetic outcomes.

Pathologic tooth migration is a change in tooth position resulting from disruption of the forces that maintain teeth in a normal position in relation to their arch. The disruption of the equilibrium in tooth position may be caused by various etiologic factors. Loss of attachment apparatus along with a non periodontal related condition such as excess occlusal force, a progressive migration of tooth may take place. Mostly this migration can be associated with aesthetic damage of the smile line. To solve these issues, a combination of periodontal and orthodontic treatment is often needed. In this

Orthodontic treatment in patients with periodontally compromised dentition often presents challenges, necessitating special considerations. This case report describes treatment of a 52-year-old female patient with advanced chronic periodontitis and pathologic tooth migration through an interdisciplinary orthodontic-periodontal approach. By integrating comprehensive periodontal treatment with strategic use of miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) and careful consideration of the applied force systems, both functional and esthetic concerns were addressed without causing adverse peri
