[Further observations on a focus of human trichostrongyliasis in the Viterbo resident].

Human cases of trichostrongyliasis recorded in Italy in Viterbo city were determined by T. axei, T. capricola, T. colubriformis and T. vitrinus. The authors refer the results of the treatment with piperazine hydrate and a benzimidazole derivative.

[Haemonchosis in camels].

Over the last thirty years, several surveys referring to the gastrointestinal parasites in the dromedary have shown high infestation rates by Haemonchus longistipes. Certain other studies have pointed out the economic and clinical importance of the camel haemonchosis. The author presents an overview of established knowledge on this major disease for the dromedary, which has hitherto been underestimated. The known features belonging either to this species or inferred from sheep haemonchosis, as a much better studied illness, are then presented. They refer to the parasite and to its cycle, to ep

A new species of trichostrongyloid in African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) (Artiodactyla: Bovinae) from Uganda.

Africanastrongylus giganticus n. sp. is described based on large ostertagiine nematodes occurring in the abomasum of African buffalo, Syncerus caffer, from Uganda; this represents the second species recognized in the genus. Specimens of A. giganticus are characterized by large size (15-19 mm in total length), a strongly tapering synlophe in the cervical region, and a great number of ridges at all levels of the body (maximum 72 attained in the third quarter); numbers of ridges exceed that reported among any known genera and species of the Ostertagiinae. We refer A. giganticus to this genus base

Gastritis in sows due to Hyostrongylus rubidus--in one case associated with Balantidium coli.

Three cases of gastritis in sows due to the stomach worm Hyostrongylus rubidus are described. This disease has not previously been reported from the Scandinavian countries. Diffuse gastritis and extreme emaciation were the essential findings at necropsy in all 3 cases. In 2 animals the gastric changes consisted of diffuse nodular hyperplasia of the mucosa. In the third case similar hyperplastic changes were present, but these were largely obscured by a superimposed extensive diphtheresis of the mucosa. The gastric changes in cases of hyostrongylosis reported in the literature and the conceptio

[Familial eosinophilia: contribution of parasitology to its diagnosis].

It has been observed, at the turn of the century, that members of some families showed a peripheral blood hypereosinophilia. Despite all pos … family, anisakiasis with hypereosinophilia had been contracted by eating raw fish. In another one, trichostrongyloidiasis was contracted by eating raw vegetables from the family garden. The diagnosis is often oriented, for the members of a same family, who are asymptomatic or pauci-symptomatic, by the blood cell count that shows an hypereosinophilia. Furthermore, a col …

Robustostrongylus aferensis gen. nov. et sp. nov. (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) in kob (Kobus kob) and hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus jacksoni) (Artiodactyla) from sub-Saharan Africa, with further ruminations on the Ostertagiinae.

Abomasal nematodes (Ostertagiinae: Trichostrongyloidea), representing a previously unrecognized genus and species, were discovered in kob (Kobus kob) and kongoni (hartebeest) (Alcelaphus buselaphus jacksoni) from Uganda during surveys of ungulate parasites in the 1960s. Robustostrongylus aferensis gen. nov. et sp. nov. is characterized by a ventriculus-like, bilobed valve at the junction of the esophagus and intestine, a synlophe with unusually robust ridges, cervical papillae and excretory pore situated posterior to the mid-length of the esophagus, a unique body form and large diameter in mal

Requirement for two discrete stimuli for induction of the intestinal rapid expulsion response against Trichinella spiralis in rats.

Rats subjected to a 7-day abbreviated enteral infection with Trichinella spiralis subsequently reject more than 90% of a challenge infection within 24 h. This process is known as rapid expulsion. In these experiments parabiotic rats were used to examine the factors that establish rapid expulsion in the intestine. Induction with low to moderate doses of worms required exposure to two separate stimuli. These initiated different responses; one was readily transferred between parabiotic rats, whereas the second response was sessile and restricted to the intestine. These two responses interacted sy

Transfer of immunity to Ostertagia circumcincta and IgA memory between identical sheep by lymphocytes collected from gastric lymph.

Sheep rendered immune to Ostertagia circumcincta were challenged with 50,000 larvae and lymphocytes were collected from the gastric lymph up to eight days after challenge. The cells were transferred intravenously to genetically identical worm-free sheep which, together with controls, were challenged with 50,000 larvae and killed nine days later. Cells obtained during the donors lymphoblast response to challenge transferred partial immunity, measured either as stunting or loss of worms. Significantly less immunity was transferred by cells collected either before or after this response. Thus the

Cytokine expression in naïve and previously infected lambs after challenge with Teladorsagia circumcincta.

Infection of sheep with Teladorsagia circumcincta triggers an immune response with predominantly type-2 (Th2) characteristics, including local eosinophila, mastocytosis and increased mucus production. In order to better understand the protective immune responses elicited, we used RT-PCR assays to define the changes in expression levels of a range of cytokine transcripts in lymph nodes draining the ovine abomasum following a challenge infection with T. circumcincta. This study compared the changes in cytokine expression in the abomasal lymph node following challenge with T. circumcincta in naïv

Trichostrongylus colubriformis: effects on villi and crypts along the whole small intestine in infected rabbits.

In control and Trichostrongylus colubriformis-infected rabbits histological samples were taken from the small intestine at 25-cm intervals from the pylorus. Length of villi, surface of glands of Lieberkühn, and number of epithelial cells per unit length were measured with a digitized table. Two zones were so delimited along the parasitized mucosa: in the proximal part of the gut, both shortened villi and dilated crypts were found; in the distal region of the intestine, which was also the area with the lowest density of parasites, dilatation of crypts was associated with an increase in the size

RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF FREQUENT, LOW-DOSE COPPER OXIDE WIRE PARTICLE TREATMENTS, FED AS A TOP DRESSING, ON GASTROINTESTINAL TRICHOSTRONGYLOID NEMATODE FECAL EGG COUNTS IN SABLE (HIPPOTRAGUS NIGER) AND GEMSBOK (ORYX GAZELLA).

Nematodes of the superfamily Trichostrongyloidea, particularly abomasal species, have severe clinical implications associated with high morbidity and potential mortality of exotic ruminants housed in zoological institutions. The life cycle and ecology of Trichostrongyloid gastrointestinal nematodes (TGN) present challenges in their control including development of anthelmintic resistance and reinfection in high-density managed herds. Copper oxide wire particles (COWP) are used to help control TGN infections in ruminants, administered as a bolus or a feed additive. This study investigated the e
