Urbanization and childhood asthma.

Childhood asthma is one of the major public health concerns, and urbanization as well as worsening environmental factors are contributing to its increasing prevalence. Outdoor pollutants, such as PM2.5, ozone, and traffic-related air pollution or TRAP, play significant roles in exacerbating asthmatic symptoms in children as well as reducing their lung function. Climate change can further compound these effects with changing pollen patterns that increase exposure to allergens in certain geographical areas. Moreover, indoor environments in urban areas also expose children to pollutants such as n

Tougher leaves under global urbanization.

Urban environments expose resident organisms to intense, multifaceted selective pressures. Studies employing intraspecific responses of functional traits have proven particularly valuable for understanding vegetation ecological strategy under urbanization. Here, we compiled a dataset of ten leaf functional traits of 1051 observations of 322 species from 104 cities to assess the impacts of urbanization. Urban-related moderators (climatic region, air quality and build up area), phylogenetic group, leaf habits and study design were considered. Results showed that leaf thickness (LT) and leaf dry

Public health problems of urbanization.

Developing countries have been peasant societies. The cities in traditional societies have been pilgrimage centres, seats of administration and educational centres. These cities had homogeneous relationships with the villages. Industrialization has developed modern megacities whose way of life is heterogeneous with that in the villages. Rural poverty has pushed villagers to the cities, which were never planned to accommodate immigrants. Public health and social problems have arisen lowering the quality of life. Communicable diseases among the urban poor coexist with non-communicable diseases a

Urbanization and emerging mental health issues.

Rapid urbanization worldwide is associated to an increase of population in the urban settings and this is leading to new emerging mental health issues. This narrative mini-review is based on a literature search conducted through PubMed and EMBASE. A total of 113 articles published on the issue of urban mental health have been selected, cited, reviewed, and summarized. There are emerging evidences about the association between urbanization and mental health issues. Urbanization affects mental health through social, economic, and environmental factors. It has been shown that common mental syndro

Urbanization of human visceral leishmaniasis in Morocco.

Human visceral leishmaniasis one of the seven most neglected tropical diseases in the world. In Morocco, HVL is widespread in all regions; but it is more common in the northern part with sporadic cases observed in the South. During the period between 2004 and 2013, the most affected Moroccan provinces were Taounate province, with 220 cases (16.09% of all cases), followed by Chefchaouen with 13.17% and Taza with 10.46% of the total cases. Children < 5 years old are the most affected age group, most cases registered were male. Geographic distribution of HVL showed predominance in rural areas but

Urbanization and solid waste production: prospects and challenges.

The increasing urban population and the restructuring of urban economies are the main aspects that determine urban development in the twenty-first century. Rapid urbanization is among the most significant anthropogenic factors that impact ecosystems and sustainability. Urbanization is a "double-edged sword." Even though it contributes to economic prosperity and social development, at the same time, it poses severe challenges to the natural environment and social system. The scientific community emphasizes the need to investigate the relationship between cities and the environment to comprehend

Climate and Urbanization Drive Mosquito Preference for Humans.

The majority of mosquito-borne illness is spread by a few mosquito species that have evolved to specialize in biting humans, yet the precise causes of this behavioral shift are poorly understood. We address this gap in the arboviral vector Aedes aegypti. We first collect and characterize the behavior of mosquitoes from 27 sites scattered across the species' ancestral range in sub-Saharan Africa, revealing previously unrecognized variation in preference for human versus animal odor. We then use modeling to show that over 80% of this variation can be predicted by two ecological factors-dry seaso

Urbanization impact on scorpion stings: An epidemiological study.

Accidents caused by venomous animals, especially scorpions, are a major public health problem due to the increase in incidence in recent decades, since scorpion species have become well adapted to urbanized environments. Nonetheless, the impact of urbanization in scorpionism is not clear. The objective of this study is to correlate the variation in the incidence of scorpion accidents with the rate of urbanized area. This was a retrospective, epidemiological study of accidents by scorpions in 376 of the most populous Brazilian cities in 2019 and compared to ten years earlier, using Spearman's c

Urbanization and mortality in Britain, c. 1800-50.

In the long-running debate over standards of living during the industrial revolution, pessimists have identified deteriorating health conditions in towns as undermining the positive effects of rising real incomes on the 'biological standard of living'. This article reviews long-run historical relationships between urbanization and epidemiological trends in England, and then addresses the specific question: did mortality rise especially in rapidly growing industrial and manufacturing towns in the period c. 1830-50? Using comparative data for British, European, and American cities and selected r

Urbanization of scrub typhus disease in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus is an endemic disease in Asia. It has been a rural disease, but indigenous urban cases have been observed in Seoul, South Korea. Urban scrub typhus may have a significant impact because of the large population. METHODS: Indigenous urban scrub typhus was epidemiologically identified in Seoul, the largest metropolitan city in South Korea, using national notifiable disease data from 2010 to 2013. For detailed analysis of clinical features, patients from one hospital that reported the majority of cases were selected and compared to a historic control group. Chigger mites

Drug addiction and impact of urbanization: a systematic review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Using the ecological public health framework, this study aims to systematically review the risk of illicit drug use and its associated negative health outcomes relating to urbanization. RECENT FINDINGS: Previous studies have indicated that urbanization associated with increased population density drives segregation of vulnerable communities of low socioeconomic status (SES). Marginalized individuals in segregated communities have increased risk of poor mental health and illicit drug use. SUMMARY: The results indicated that urban-specific environmental risk factors, individ

Urbanization and anticoagulant poisons promote immune dysfunction in bobcats.

Understanding how human activities influence immune response to environmental stressors can support biodiversity conservation across increasingly urbanizing landscapes. We studied a bobcat (Lynx rufus) population in urban southern California that experienced a rapid population decline from 2002-2005 due to notoedric mange. Because anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) exposure was an underlying complication in mange deaths, we aimed to understand sublethal contributions of urbanization and ARs on 65 biochemical markers of immune and organ function. Variance in immunological variables was primarily as

Tobacco Use by Urbanization Level Among U.S. Adults, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to examine rural-urban differences in the current use of tobacco products among U.S. adults using 2024 National Health Interview Survey data and the updated 2023 National Center for Health Statistics urban-rural classification scheme. METHODS: This study analyzed data from U.S. adults aged ≥18 years in the 2024 National Health Interview Survey (N=32,629). Weighted logistic regression models estimated the associations between rurality and the current use of any tobacco, cigarettes, E-cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco. A Poisson regression model a

Urbanization increases the complexity of soil microbial interaction networks.

Urbanization reshapes soil ecosystems, yet its impacts on the composition and interactions of soil microbial communities remain insufficiently understood. Here, we use high-throughput sequencing to profile bacteria, fungi, and protists across four representative habitat types of different urbanization level-campuses, roadside greenbelts, suburban unmanaged lands, and concrete pavements in four Chinese cities spanning a broad latitudes (Changchun, Beijing, Hangzhou, Haikou). Vegetated habitats consistently structure microbial communities, whereas concrete pavements form a distinct disturbed hab

Interactions between urbanization, malaria infection and avian cloacal microbiome.

Urbanization, a major component of global change, has drastically modified the landscape, and is generally associated with biodiversity loss. Pollutants and low-quality food resources, among other urban stressors, can alter the physiology of urban-dwelling birds, ultimately affecting their interactions with other organisms, including pathogens and symbiotic microorganisms. The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is one of the most common passerine species closely associated with anthropized environments. Here, we explored the association between the level of habitat urbanization, avian malaria i
