The fusion of sexuality and violence is a major issue of concern and has become a central issue of social policy. That fusion can be observed in private circumstances as well as in society at large. Children and young people as well as women and men can fall victim to that phenomenon. Eventually, due to gender stereotyping, the awareness of the victimization of the male gender is somewhat weak. In the social-political discourse the male is seen as dominant and powerful and the female gender as the weak one. Sexual violence and/or domination therefore is interpreted as mirroring the genderized

This retrospective study compares the epidemiological characteristics of incidents of family violence and community violence admitted to an urban emergency department. The study included 8810 victims of interpersonal violence admitted to the emergency department or trauma centre at Odense University Hospital, Denmark from 2014 to 24. Data about age, sex, place of violence, date and time of treatment, weapon use, injury severity, diagnoses and perpetrator were extracted from the patient registry system. Family and community violence were defined according to WHO. Family violence accounted for 1

Intimate partner violence and sexual violence represent significant public health challenges that carry many individual and societal costs. More than 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and more than 1 in 4 men (28.5%) in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Clinicians play an integral role on the screening, identification, and management of these sensitive issues.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the specificities of intimate partner sexual violence among heterosexual partners, as well as to contrast them to the sexual violence perpetrated by strangers or acquaintances.
METHOD: A narrative review was conducted to identify relevant findings in the scientific and medical literature to inform about intimate partner sexual violence. Findings were also analysed with the lens of the clinical experience of the authors working with men convicted of intimate partner sexual violence.
RESULTS: Intimate partner sexual violence was legally recognized by artic

There is a pervasive pattern of discrimination and prejudice against transgendered people within society. Both economic discrimination and experiencing violence could be the result of a larger social climate that severely sanctions people for not conforming to society's norms concerning gender; as such, both would be strongly associated with each other. Questionnaires were distributed to people either through events or through volunteers, and made available upon the World Wide Web. A sample of 402 cases was collected over the span of 12 months (April 1996-April 1997). We found that over half t

BACKGROUND: Exposure to protracted public violence is increasingly referenced as a risk factor for domestic violence, but limited quantitative evidence has demonstrated this association to date. This study analyzes associations in Colombia between lifetime experiences of external violence, including the Colombia civil conflict and community interpersonal violence, and experiences of household violence, including intimate partner and caregiver violence.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We use the 2018 Colombia Violence Against Children and Youth Survey, employing multi-variable logistic regressions to de

The rate of death due to guns is higher in the United States than in other high-income countries. More than 200 Americans are murdered or assaulted with a firearm daily. In the United States, more than 300,000 individuals have died from firearm injuries in the past decade. Firearm injuries cost more than $3 billion per year, and deaths from guns cause more than $20 billion in lifetime work loss and medical costs. Risk factors for being a perpetrator of gun violence include a personal history of or exposure to individuals with violent tendencies, untreated mental disorders, substance abuse, and

Children who are exposed to domestic violence (DV) may experience many short- and long-term negative effects. They are up to 3.8 times more likely to become perpetrators or victims in adulthood than are children not exposed to DV. They also are at high risk of health problems, risky health behaviors, violence, and social functioning problems. Girls who witness intimate partner violence (IPV) are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and trauma symptoms, and boys exposed to IPV are more likely to exhibit aggression and delinquent behaviors. To prepare the practice to identify and assis

This study examined the mediating effects of the acceptability of violence and partner control on the relationship between family violence and dating violence. We surveyed 408 participants in their 20s (162 men and 246 women) from Seoul, Gyeonggi, Busan, and other regions of Korea. The research results of structural equation modeling were as follows. First, family violence was positively associated with dating violence (β = .12, p < .05). Second, the acceptability of violence and partner control sequentially mediated the relationship between family violence and dating violence (β = .01, p < .0

Gender-based violence is related to the power imbalance between men and women that is present, to a greater or lesser degree, in all societies. It was recognized as a human rights problem by the United Nations relatively recently. It includes emotional, physical and sexual violence. Sexual violence is the extreme form of gender-based violence, usually accompanied by the other types of violence. Its prevalence is difficult to determine, but it is likely to affect at least one-third of women at some time in their life. It has multiple effects on women's physical and gynaecological health, and th

Research on the effects of media violence is not well understood by the general public. Despite this fact, there is an overwhelming consensus in the scientific literature about the unhealthy effects of media violence. Meta-analyses show that media-violence viewing consistently is associated with higher levels of antisocial behavior, ranging from the trivial (imitative violence directed against toys) to the serious (criminal violence), with many consequential outcomes in between (acceptance of violence as a solution to problems, increased feelings of hostility, and the apparent delivery of pain

During childhood and adolescence, the formation of groups or gangs is a normal part of the growing process. Playmates, school friends, Boy and Girl Scout troops are each examples of the natural inclination to form group attachments that provide a stable social outlet. However, gangs, as we now know them, are part of the pathological process brought on by the inability to disassociate from adolescent groupings, and more frightening, the result of infiltration by criminal elements, such as drug dealers, who exert violent influence on impressionable youngsters, particularly in major urban areas.

PURPOSE: We assess the association of men's exposure to violence in childhood-witnessing physical violence against one's mother and being hit or beaten by a parent or adult relative-with their attitudes about intimate partner violence (IPV) against women. We explore whether men's perpetration of IPV mediates this relationship and whether men's attitudes about IPV mediate any relationship of exposure to violence in childhood with perpetration of IPV.

OBJECTIVES: To assess gender differences in the proportion of adolescents reporting teen dating violence (TDV) and the frequency of TDV at multiple age points across adolescence in a high-risk sample of youth with previous exposure to violence.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, high-risk sample of boys and girls (n = 1149) ages 11 to 17 years completed surveys assessing TDV and self-defense. Indices of TDV included perpetration and victimization scales of controlling behaviors, psychological TDV, physical TDV, sexual TDV, fear/intimidation, and injury.
RESULTS: More girls reported perpetrating psy

Research was undertaken to validate the efficacy of a new, nurse-led treatment, the Violence Prevention Community Meeting (VPCM), for reducing patient violence on an acute-care inpatient psychiatry unit. Nursing staff members carried event counters and recorded verbal and physical violence as it occurred over the 20-week study. Significant decreases in patient violence were found across day, evening, and night shifts for pre-treatment vs. treatment and pre-treatment vs. post-treatment comparisons. For the day shift, when twice-weekly VPCM treatment took place, violent incidents decreased 89% f

This qualitative study examined female domestic violence offenders via structured interviews with 13 women referred for treatment in batterers' intervention programs in a major metropolitan area. The majority of women were victims of childhood abuse and/or witnessed violence between their parents. Most reported feeling cut-off from their mothers, left their childhood homes before the age of 18, and experienced violence at the hands of a prior partner. Women's motivations for current violence were primarily in self-defense or in retaliation for their partners' physical abuse, and secondarily in

BACKGROUND: Child-to-parent violence (CPV) is a serious but under-researched form of family violence. There is a lack of previous studies examining whether school violence and exposure to parental violence interact in their association with CPV. We hypothesize that involvement in school violence - as victim or perpetrator - is more strongly associated with physical CPV among individuals who have been exposed to parental violence.
METHODS: Data are drawn from a large cross-sectional study conducted in 35 schools in southern Sweden. The sample comprises 5,052 adolescents (46.7% male; Mage = 16.

Inpatient violence constitutes a major concern for staff, patients, and administrators. Violence can cause physical injury and psychological trauma. Although violence presents a challenge to inpatient clinicians, it should not be viewed as inevitable. By looking at history of violence, in addition to clinical and other historical factors, clinicians can identify which patients present the most risk of exhibiting violent behavior and whether the violence would most likely flow from psychosis, impulsivity, or predatory characteristics. With that information, clinicians can provide environmental
