Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are carbon-based, low molecular weight compounds that easily enter the gaseous state due to their low boiling point and high vapor pressure. Biogenic VOCs are those metabolites made by or associated with living systems. In nature, these VOCs are detected as combined mixtures of varying amounts and concentrations of alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ketones, modified amino acids, furans, terpenes, thiols and their derivatives. Many organisms use volatile compounds for signaling and defense, where they are variously called 'semiochemicals', 'infochemicals', 'alleloch

Motor vehicles are among the major sources of pollutants and greenhouse gases in urban areas and a transition to "zero emission vehicles" is underway worldwide. However, emissions associated with brake and tire wear will remain. We show here that previously unrecognized volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, which have a similarity to biomass burning emissions are emitted during braking. These include greenhouse gases or, these classified as Hazardous Air Pollutants, as well as nitrogen-containing organics, nitrogen oxides and ammonia. The distribution and reactivity of these gaseous em

The functionality of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based interferometric fiber sensors for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection is investigated and experimentally demonstrated. Two interferometric configurations are considered in this work, namely Fabry-Perot (FP) and Sagnac interferometers (SI). Both sensors are functionalized with a thin layer of VOC-sensitive polymer: PDMS, whose degree of swelling varies as a function of VOC concentrations. This swelling effect will result in an optical path length and birefringence modulation for FP and SI sensors, respectively. In this paper, the

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cause of cancer-related death worldwide, highlighting the pressing need for an effective early detection method. Tumor metabolism leads to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into exhaled breath, offering a promising opportunity for noninvasive screening. Nevertheless, the absence of a targeted test has hindered its clinical application.
AIM: This study sought to develop and validate a specific breath VOC signature for discriminating CRC from other gastrointestinal diseases.
DESIGN: A case-control study.
METHODS: This study enrolle

Although studies of occupational exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) often partition variability across groups, and between and within persons, those of environmental exposure to VOCs have not involved such partitioning. Using data from the Environmental Protection Agency's total exposure assessment methodology (TEAM) studies, we partitioned exposure variability across cities, and between and within persons for nine VOCs. The estimated variance components decreased in the order: within-person > between-person > across city. Despite their smaller magnitudes, estimates of between-perso

Routine measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air have shown that average concentrations are very much smaller than those used in laboratory experiments designed to study the effects of VOCs on plants. However, maximum hourly concentrations of some VOCs can be 100 times larger than the average, even in rural air. Experimental studies have rarely extended for longer than a few days, so there is little information on potential long-term effects of exposure to small concentrations. This review considers the available evidence for long-term effects, based on laboratory and field dat

In 2001, Bacillus anthracis spores were delivered through the United States postal system in a series of bioterrorist acts. Controls proposed for this threat included sanitization with high-energy electrons. Solid phase microextraction was used with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry for field sampling and analysis of volatile compounds apparently produced from polymeric materials such as cellulose and plastics, immediately following processing of mail at a commercial irradiation facility. Solid phase microextraction and direct sampling of air into a cryogenically cooled temperature programm

A method for the analysis of volatile halogenated hydrocarbons in biological samples has been developed. Extraction efficiencies for various C1 and C2 halocarbons were found to be in the range of 63--82%, and recoveries were fairly good. The detection limits lie in the sub-ppb range (0.1--1 ppb). The method has been used to analyse fish samples from both unpolluted and polluted areas in Norway. The compounds most frequently found were chloroform, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene in concentrations ranging from 10--1000 ppb. From one area, corresponding water and fish samples were analy

Separation of volatile organic compounds is one of the most studied processes in industry. TAMOF-1 is a homochiral metal-organic framework with a crystalline network of interconnected ≈1 nm channels and has high thermal and chemical stability. Thanks to these features, it can resolve racemic mixtures of chiral drugs as a chiral stationary phase in chromatography. Interestingly, the particular shape and size of its channels, along with the presence of metallic centers and functional groups, allow establishing weak but significant interactions with guest molecules. This opens interesting possibi

Human-emitted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are mainly from breath and the skin. In this study, we continuously measured VOCs in a stainless-steel environmentally controlled climate chamber (22.5 m3, air change rate at 3.2 h-1) occupied by four seated human volunteers using proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Experiments with human whole body, breath-only, and dermal-only emissions were performed under ozone-free and ozone-present conditions. In addition, the effect of temperature, relative humidity, clothing type, and age was

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a profoundly life changing condition and once diagnosis occurs, this is typically at a relatively late stage into the disease process. Therefore, a shift to earlier diagnosis, which means several decades before the onset of the typical manifestation of the disease, will be an important step forward for the patient. A promising diagnostic and screening tool to answer this purpose is represented by breath and exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis. In fact, human exhaled breath contains several thousand of VOCs that vary in abundance and number in correlat

OBJECTIVES: To identify and summarise volatile organic compound (VOC) exposure profiles of healthcare occupations.
METHODS: Personal (n=143) and mobile area (n=207) evacuated canisters were collected and analysed by a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer to assess exposures to 14 VOCs among 14 healthcare occupations in five hospitals. Participants were volunteers identified by their supervisors. Summary statistics were calculated by occupation. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to reduce the 14 analyte inputs to five orthogonal factors and identify occupations that were associated wi

Three volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), carbon disulfide (CS(2)), and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), were detected in the stratified water column of a lake (Linsley Pond) in Connecticut. The compounds DMS and DMDS appeared in both the oxic and the anoxic portions of the water column, CS(2) was primarily found in anoxic hypolimnion. Algal metabolism and/or bacterial degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids or other organic materials are potential sources of VOSCs in the oxic lake water. Reactions of hydrogen sulfide with organic compounds and microbial degradati

The inclusion properties of a calixarene-based porous material have been studied to investigate the adsorption and the desorption of carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and water in the zeolite-like structure. Uptake and release processes have been studied both by time-resolved powder X-ray diffraction and by thermogravimetric analysis to obtain structural and kinetic information. The selected guests are able to enter the structure with an increase in the host cell volume and with time-dependent diffusivity coefficients. Chloroform molecules act as a permanent porosity switch promoting a phase t

An electrochemical biofilter (EBF) was developed for enhancing the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through current. The removal efficiency (RE) of toluene exhibited a notable increase of 15% while the biomass growth rate exhibited a corresponding decline of 46% under an optimal current intensity of 50 mA. Meanwhile, the efficacy of the EBF system was markedly enhanced upon the removal of n-hexane, styrene, dichloromethane, and diisobutylene. The results indicated that there was an 11% to 49% increase in RE and a 0% to 64% reduction in biomass growth rates under the influence of th

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) profile for diagnosis and monitoring therapeutic response of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been well studied. We determined VOCs profile in exhaled breath of 97 HCC patients and 111 controls using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and Support Vector Machine algorithm. The combination of acetone, 1,4-pentadiene, methylene chloride, benzene, phenol and allyl methyl sulfide provided the highest accuracy of 79.6%, with 76.5% sensitivity and 82.7% specificity in the training set; and 55.4% accuracy, 44.0% sensitivity, and 75.0% specificity in the test s

In recent years, consumer demand for health benefitting, pleasant-tasting rapeseed oil has increased, and so has production. Ireland's climate and agricultural background can support the production of high-quality rapeseed oil. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) can give rise to highly distinctive flavours in rapeseed oils, produced during crop growth and generated during processing. This study performed VOC and sensory evaluation to determine if correlations exist. Samples of Irish rapeseed oils from 6 different producers were analysed. Compounds detected in the oil samples consisted of acids,

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and the majority of them have been proved to be detrimental to human health. The hazardous VOCs were studied very insufficiently in China, despite the enormous emissions of VOCs. In this study, the concentrations and sources of 17 hazardous VOCs reported in literature were reviewed, based on which the health effects were assessed. In-depth survey indicated that benzene and toluene had the highest concentrations in eastern China (confined to the study regions reviewed, same for the other geographic generalization), which however

It often is of interest to understand the relative importance of the different sources contributing to the concentration c(w) of a contaminant in a stream; the portions related to sources 1, 2, 3, etc. are denoted c(w,1), c(w2), c(w3), etc. Like c(w), the fractions alpha1 = c(w,1)/c(w), alpha2 = c(w,2)/c(w), alpha3 = c(w,3)/c(w), etc. depend on location and time. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can undergo absorption from the atmosphere into stream water or loss from stream water to the atmosphere, causing complexities affecting the source apportionment (SA) of VOCs in streams. Two SA rules
