Wandering spleen.

The spleen is rather firmly attached in the left upper quadrant by five ligaments or peritoneal reflections. With congenital failure or acquired laxity of these attachments, the genital failure or acquired laxity of these attachments, the spleen acquires a true vascular pedicle and becomes mobile. This rare condition, called wandering spleen, makes the organ subject to the complication of torsion, which usually produces an acute abdominal emergency and requires immediate surgical removal. Symptomatic patients display a characteristic constellation of findings that strongly suggests the correct…

Wandering spleen.

Wandering spleen is a rare clinical entity, characterized by splenic hypermobility that results from elongation or maldevelopment of its suspensary ligaments. The wandering spleen is in constant danger of torsion and infarction. This condition poses a great diagnostic challenge due to lack of awareness and paucity of symptoms. Among adults, it usually occurs in females of childbearing age, the children below ten years of age are other sufferers. The clinical presentation may be acute or chronic; such as asymptomatic abdominal mass, an acute abdomen, or, most commonly, a mass associated with va…

Wandering spleen.

Congenital malformations of the spleen are rare. We report 3 cases of wandering spleen presented as abdominal or pelvi-abdominal mass. Two patients were suffering from chronic lower abdominal pain with thrombosed splenic pedicle and the third patient had an acute abdomen. All patients underwent splenectomies. Abdominal ultrasound, computerized tomography, Doppler ultrasound, and radioisotope studies were used to confirm the diagnosis. The clinical, diagnostic and treatment modalities are discussed.

[A wandering spleen].

A mobile asymptomatic abdominal mass was accidentally found in a 81-year-old man. Further studies revealed a wandering spleen. Wandering spleen is rare, the diagnosis can easily be made with ultrasonography. The patient presented was asymptomatic, but severe complications may occur. Congenital anomalies of ligaments, splenomegaly and pregnancy may be of aetiological importance. In young patients and in case of complaints splenopexia is the treatment of choice; the patient presented was treated conservatively.

The wandering spleen.

Wandering spleen is an unusual entity, occurring in both sexes and at any age, but is more frequent in women of reproductive age and in children. Wandering spleen is probably most often a result of congenital anomalies of development of the dorsal mesogastrium, but acquired factors may have a role in certain instances. Patients present most commonly with an asymptomatic mass, mass and subacute abdominal or gastrointestinal complaints or with acute abdominal findings. Clinical diagnosis can be difficult, but noninvasive imaging procedures, such as sonography, nuclear scintigraphy, computed tomo…

[Wandering spleen torsion].

The ectopic spleen characterizes for absence of its suspensory ligaments and a long pedicle that are predisposed to complicate it for a torsion with commitment of the venous drainage at first and arterial at a later time himself, producing increase of its volume and infarct. This anomalous situation, it can be had to a congenital malformation of the development of its suspensory elements and fall toward the inferior abdomen or else to an inferior growth of the mesodermic yolk of that this organ originates itself. The suitable treatment is the laparoscopic splenopexy, but when it exists infarct

Splenoptosis (wandering spleen).

Splenoptosis which is a congenital fusion anomaly of dorsal mesogastrium in children is a very rare entity. In the literature cases are usually diagnosed at operation and it is noted that in former years splenectomy had a special place among various methods of treatment. In this report, a 7-year-old case of splenoptosis diagnosed on ultrasonography and isotope scintigraphic methods preoperatively and treated by splenopexy is presented. In cases with splenoptosis the clinical and radiologic diagnostic criteria are given and the importance of splenopexy in treatment is emphasized.

Wandering accessory spleen.

A patient with an excessively mobile accessory spleen detected on ultrasound examination is reported in whom a normally located spleen was also found. Sonographic and colour Doppler imaging criteria were used for making the specific diagnosis. The large accessory spleen has been demonstrated at different sites within the abdomen on subsequent follow-up sonographic examinations. The splanchnic flow pattern obtained from the long vascular pedicle of the accessory spleen indicated normal perfusion. Since the perfusion of the wandering accessory spleen was not compromised by torsion, and the patie

Wandering Spleen: An Overview.

An ectopic (or "wandering") spleen results from abnormal ligamentous laxity failing to fixate the spleen in its normal location in the left upper quadrant. Ligamentous laxity can be acquired due to conditions, such as splenomegaly or pregnancy, but is often congenital. Because of this laxity, there is an elongated vascular pedicle, which is prone to torsion and resultant splenic infarction. These patients generally present with abdominal pain and other nonspecific symptoms making the diagnosis very difficult to make clinically. As such, the radiologist plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and
