The development and evaluation of a behavioral weight-reduction program.

The development of a comprehensive weight-reduction program and its implementation in the clinic are described. The program consisted of explicit instructions on food monitoring, stimulus control, chaining, exercise, and self-reinforcement. The results of pilot research indicated that the program produced reliable weight loss and that its implementation in a group format was more positive. A formal experiment evaluated the effectiveness of program components in a 2 x 2 factorial design after ten weeks of treatment and at three-month and one-year follow-ups. There was significant weight loss wi

Controlled-release diethylpropion hydrochloride used in a program for weight reduction.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled evaluation in obese adults given comparable dietary and exercise recommendations, controlled-release diethylpropion hydrochloride promoted significantly more weight loss than matching placebo. The mean reduction in 12 weeks was 15.9 lb (average 1.32 lb/week) for 12 patients taking diethylpropion hydrochloride, 10.0 lb (0.84 lb/week) for 13 taking placebo, and 12.2 lb for 13 taking drug for two four-week periods separated by four weeks of placebo (1.38 lb/week on active drug and 0.30 lb/week on placebo). Amphetamine-like side effects were virtually absent.

The effect of target behavior monitoring on weight loss and completion rate in a behavior modification program for weight reduction.

Although behavior modification of obesity is usually described as a behavior change procedure, measurement is most often limited to the outcome variable of weight loss. The present investigation employed detailed behavior monitoring forms in half of 16 obesity groups (n = 173) matched across four different therapists. The percentage of compliance for nine specific treatment behaviors was charted from these monitoring forms. At the end of treatment, the eight groups that had the behavior monitoring treatment averaged over 6 pounds more weight lost than the matched control groups as well as show

The role of motivation in weight reduction programs for children and adolescents with overweight or obesity: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Obesity and overweight in children and adolescents are a growing concern. Treatments should be multidisciplinary, address the whole family and contain aspects of motivation. Motivation is a well-known impact factor in medical treatment but its role in the treatment of pediatric obesity is not clear. This systematic review aims to analyze the role of motivation by summarizing theoretical frameworks and synthesizing effects of weight reduction programs that assessed motivation as either outcome or predictor. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines.

Food neophobia in the context of a varied diet induced by a weight reduction program in massively obese adolescents.

Previous studies in humans have shown that short to middle-term pre-exposure to multiple foods can reduce the negative response to novel foods (neophobia). In order to explore the effects of a long-term exposure to varied foods on food neophobia, we studied a population of obese adolescents observed in a longitudinal protocol in which the multiple food experiences are induced by a residential weight reduction program (WRP) that encourages the consumption of a wide variety of foods. Seventy-two massively obese adolescents (22 boys) filled the food neophobia scale (FNS, [Pliner, P., & Hobden, K.

Reduction of shape and weight concern in young adolescents: a 30-month controlled evaluation of a media literacy program.

OBJECTIVE: Recent eating disorder prevention efforts have targeted high-risk females in late adolescence (>15 years). Methodologically rigorous evaluations of prevention programs directed to younger, mixed-sex, universal audiences are largely absent. The primary objective was to evaluate a theoretically informed media literacy program delivered to a mixed-sex, universal, young adolescent audience. METHOD: Five hundred forty Grade 8 students (mean age 13.62 years, SD 0.37 years) from 4 schools participated with a total of 11 classes receiving the 8-lesson media literacy program (126 girls and

Effects of Diet-Induced Obesity and Programs for Body Weight Reduction on the Histostructure of the Triceps Surae Muscle in Male Rats.

We studied the effects of visceral obesity induced by a high-calorie diet and health-improving variants of its correction on morphological characteristics of the muscle tissue in male Wistar rats. At stage I, the rats received standard (StD) or high-calorie diet (HCD) for 8 weeks. At stage II, the animals were divided into the following subgroups: no correction (StD and HCD), switching from HCD to StD (HCD/StD) and/or connection of physical activity in the form of treadmill running (StD+running, HCD+running, and HCD/StD+running) for the next 8 weeks. Diet-induced visceral obesity was shown to

A systematic review of structured weight loss programs and their association with HbA1c reduction in adults with prediabetes managed in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Prediabetes, marked by elevated blood glucose levels below the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) threshold, is a growing public health concern due to its rising prevalence and risk of progression to diabetes and cardiovascular issues. Structured weight loss programs in primary care show promise for improving glycemic control, yet their impact on HbA1c remains underexplored. This systematic review evaluates their effectiveness in reducing HbA1c in adults with prediabetes. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 and SWiM guidelines, we searched six databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL,

Robotic Surgery for Sigmoid Colon Cancer in a Patient With Severe Obesity and Protocol Proposal of Preoperative Weight Reduction Program.

Surgical procedures in patients with severe obesity are associated with an increased risk of complications. Preoperative weight reduction is recommended. We report a case of robotic-assisted sigmoidectomy in a patient with severe obesity (obesity class III: WHO classification) and sigmoid colon cancer after preoperative management based on the previously reported protocol. A 47-year-old man was referred from a private clinic because of an occult fecal blood test during a routine annual check-up.
