Behavioral adaptations are triggered by different constraints given by rules, and are informed by outcomes, or motivational changes. Neural activity in multiple frontal areas is modulated during behavioral adaptations, but the source of these modulations and the nature of the mechanisms involved are unclear. Here we tested how different variables related to changes in task performance and to behavioral adaptation impact the amplitude of event-related local field potentials (LFPs) in the lateral prefrontal and midcingulate cortex of male rhesus macaques. We found that the behavioral task used i

This unit provides information to aid in the selection and proper use of a laboratory balance. Laboratory balances are used for measuring the mass of an object and come in two main types: mechanical and electronic. Electronic balances generally come with a computer interface to facilitate the collection, storage, and manipulation of the data. In addition to weighing objects, electronic balances also perform a range of computations, including counting objects, measuring density, statistics, and pipet volume calibration. Balances vary widely in terms of their capacity (how heavy an object they c

Approximately 1 year after rats were seized as young adults with lithium (3 mEq/kg) and pilocarpine (30 mg/kg) and given acepromazine or ketamine, 18 blood measures, wet tissue weights, and detailed damage scores for 107 brain structures were completed. Compared with normal and ketamine-treated rats, acepromazine-treated seized rats (total n=54) had lighter pancreata and spleens and elevated aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase blood levels. Even though average damage did not differ, the mosaic of brain damage completely discriminated the two seized groups. Differential effe

Organ weights are a possible diagnostic or pathophysiological clue to distinguishing sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) cases from other infant deaths but suffer from major confounding. Using autopsy data from the Chicago Infant Mortality Study, a majority African-American case-control study of deceased infants under 1 year conducted 1993-96, we assessed differences in the weights of brain, thymus, kidneys, lungs, liver, spleen, total body, and four length anthropometry measures in SIDS-diagnosed infants compared to controls. Using exact and coarsened matching, we ran Bayesian linear models w

Attempts were made to estimate the actual molecular weight of satietin, an endogenous food intake inhibitor, by means of classical and high-performance gel filtration and gel electrophoresis. Satietin, which proved to be a glycoprotein, was isolated from human plasma. Sephacryl S-300 gel and TSK-GEL G 3000 SW columns were used as media for gel filtration and gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS-PAGE), respectively. A relatively good correlation was established between the molecular weight measurements carried out by different methods, although satietin as a carbo

CONTEXT: There are conflicting reports of increased vs decreased hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activation in obesity; the most consistent finding is an inverse relationship between body mass index (BMI) and morning cortisol. In anorexia nervosa (AN), a low-BMI state, cortisol measures are elevated.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate cortisol measures across the weight spectrum.
DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a cross-sectional study at a clinical research center.
PARTICIPANTS: This study included 60 women, 18-45 years of age: overweight/obese (OB; N = 21); AN (N = 18); and norma

OBJECTIVE: Weight suppression (WS) has demonstrated associations with numerous indices of eating behavior, psychopathology and eating disorder prognosis. However, because WS has traditionally been measured as a simple subtraction of current weight from highest past weight at adult height, this calculation is problematic for most individuals with disordered eating, who usually reach their highest past weight during adolescence. Here we propose a new method for computing WS to address this shortcoming, termed "developmental weight suppression" (DWS), and provide a web-based tool for ease of calc

BACKGROUND: Lung weight characterises severity of pulmonary oedema and predicts response to mechanical ventilation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of quantitative analysis of thorax computed tomography (CT) for measuring lung weight in pigs with or without pulmonary oedema.
METHODS: Thirty-six pigs were mechanically ventilated with different tidal volumes and positive end-expiratory pressures that did or did not induce pulmonary oedema. After 54 h, they underwent thorax CT (CT in vivo ) and were then sacrificed and exsanguinated. Fourteen pigs underwent a second thorax CT

AIM: To explore the possibility of using plaque weight rather than plaque index as a more objective, clinical outcome measure in periodontal clinical trials.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study initially recruited 12 healthy volunteers who abstained from tooth cleaning for 24 h on each of the three occasions and then for 48 h on each of a further three occasions to accumulate plaque. On a further three visits, the subjects abstained from tooth cleaning for 24 h and then brushed with a powered toothbrush for 2 min. A split-mouth design with target teeth was adopted and plaque was first scored sep

Gestational weight gain (GWG) is an important predictor of adverse pregnancy outcomes including gestational diabetes, preterm birth, delivery by caesarean and post-partum weight retention. The Institute of Medicine guidelines on GWG are widely adopted, and GWG is widely researched as an outcome of interest in lifestyle interventions during pregnancy. However, estimation of prepregnancy weight and measurement of weight prior to delivery introduce bias into measures of GWG. This review discusses the sources of bias in measures of GWG and the potential effect of bias on the relationship between a

BACKGROUND: Reducing neonatal mortality is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.2. In Tanzania and other low- and middle-income countries, many babies are born at home or in primary health care settings without access to weighing scales. Other anthropometric measurements apart from weight may serve as effective surrogates for identifying low birth weight (LBW) infants and prioritizing them for care. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of four anthropometric measurements chest circumference (CHC), occipitofrontal circumference (OFC),

Computed tomography (CT) images provide detailed information on tissue composition and density. Body weight estimation from CT can be highly relevant in emergency and forensic contexts where conventional weighing is impractical or unavailable-for example, due to unconscious or immobilized patients, lack of appropriate equipment, or the necessity to preserve forensic trace evidence. An automated method for body weight estimation using antemortem and postmortem CT data from clinical scanners was evaluated. Two retrospective cohorts were included: 30 forensic postmortem whole-body CT scans and 66

We determined whether organ weights at autopsy are correlated with disease acuity leading to pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) admission and death. The weights of heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, spleen, and brain were recorded in 68 pediatric ICU cases. For each organ, weight Z scores were calculated based on reference values previously established in large cohorts of deceased children by Kayser (any organ), or Dekaban and Sadowsky (brain only). Organ weight Z scores in pediatric ICU patients were severely increased (median [range] for heart, +3.2 [-6.3 to +37.7]; lungs, +3.0 [-8.6 to +38.1];

OBJECTIVE: To validate longitudinal postnatal weight gain as a method for predicting severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in a US cohort.
METHODS: Both ROP evaluations and weekly weight measurements from birth to postmenstrual week 36 for 318 infants were entered into a computer-based surveillance system, WINROP. This system signaled an alarm when the rate of weight gain decreased compared with control subjects. Infants were classified into 3 groups: (1) no alarm, (2) low-risk alarm, or (3) high-risk alarm. Maximum ROP for each infant was categorized as (1) no ROP (immature or mature vascu

Fetal weight prediction with ultrasonic measurements of biparietal diameter (BPD) and abdominal circumference (AC) using the equation by Shepard et al. [1982] was tested prospectively in 310 fetuses. Fetuses of all weight categories were included. The error of weight prediction was in the range of +684 to -880 g. One SD of prediction error was 242 g or 8.5% of birth weight. An overestimation was seen in a fetus with a birth weight of less than 2,500 g (1 SD = 183 g or 10% of birth weight). An underestimation could be observed in a fetus with a birth weight of more than 4,000 g (1 SD = 259 g or
