Dietary 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol supplementation increases natural phytate phosphorus utilization in chickens.

These studies were conducted to determine if supplementation of a corn-soybean meal diet with 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25-(OH)2D3] would increase the utilization of natural phytate phosphorus by broiler chickens. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary 1,25-(OH)2D3 in the presence and absence of supplemental phytase and at several dietary levels of inorganic phosphorus supplementation. The criteria measured in these studies were weight gain, gain:feed ratio, bone ash, rickets due to phosphorus deficiency, plasma calcium and phosphorus and retention of calcium,

Effects of primary calcium source on phytase efficiency in weaned piglets.

An 18-d experiment tested the hypothesis that using calcium formate (Ca-formate) instead of limestone in piglet diets, lowers the dietary buffering capacity, reduces stomach pH, and improves phytase efficiency. At weaning (29.8 ± 1.10 d), 60 boars (body weight 8.8 ± 0.31 kg) housed in metabolism crates were allotted to a randomized complete block design with 10 experimental diets and 2 weaning rounds. Diets were formulated following a 5 × 2 factorial design with 5 dietary treatments (Trt) and 2 main Ca sources (limestone or Ca-formate). The 5 Trt included a positive control diet [PC; 0.76% Ca,

Phosphorus solubilization and plant growth enhancement by arsenic-resistant bacteria.

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient, which is limited in most soils. The P solubilization and growth enhancement ability of seven arsenic-resistant bacteria (ARB), which were isolated from arsenic hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata, was investigated. Siderophore-producing ARB (PG4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12 and 16) were effective in solubilizing P from inorganic minerals FePO4 and phosphate rock, and organic phytate. To reduce bacterial P uptake we used filter-sterilized Hoagland medium containing siderophores or phytase produced by PG12 or PG6 to grow tomato plants supplied with FePO4 or phytate. To confi

The impact of canola meal and enzyme supplementation on growth performance, carcass traits and digestibility of starch and protein in broiler chickens offered corn-based diets.

Canola meal is a cost‑effective alternative to soybean meal in broiler diets in Australia and parts of Southeast Asia, but its inclusion rate is often limited due to its lower protein digestibility. Supplementation of enzymes, particularly phytase, is a common practice in broiler chicken industry. However, the additive effects of protease and carbohydrases on top of phytase on growth performance and nutrition digestibility remain unclear. A total of 576 off-sex male Ross 308 broiler chickens were assigned to eight dietary treatments in a 2 by 4 factorial design, including two diet types [corn-

Purification, biochemical characterization, and genetic cloning of the phytase produced by Burkholderia sp. strain a13.

A phytase-producing bacterium, Burkholderia sp. a13 (JCM 30421), was isolated from Lake Kasumigaura by enrichment cultivation using minimum medium containing phytic acid as the sole phosphorus source. The phytase production by strain a13 was induced by the presence of phytic acid and repressed by the addition of glucose. The purified enzyme had a molecular weight of 44 kDa and a phytase activity of 174 μmol min(-1) mg(-1). The enzyme showed broad substrate specificity, but the highest activity was observed with phytic acid. The enzyme activity was strongly inhibited by Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Hg(2+),

Disrupting Mycobacterium smegmatis biofilm using enzyme-immobilized rifampicin loaded silk fibroin nanoparticles for dual anti-bacterial and anti-biofilm action.

Biofilm formation is a major challenge in the treatment of tuberculosis, leading to poor treatment outcomes and latent infections. The complex and dense extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the biofilm provides safe harbour for bacterium enabling persistence against anti-TB antibiotics. In this study, we demonstrated that rifampicin-encapsulated silk fibroin nanoparticles immobilized with antibiofilm enzymes can disrupt the Mycobacterium smegmatis biofilm and facilitate the anti-bacterial action of Rifampicin (RIF). The EPS of M.smegmatis biofilm predominantly comprised of lipids (48.8

Transgenic mice expressing bacterial phytase as a model for phosphorus pollution control.

We have developed transgenic mouse models to determine whether endogenous expression of phytase transgenes in the digestive tract of monogastric animals can increase the bioavailability of dietary phytate, a major but indigestible form of dietary phosphorus. We constructed phytase transgenes composed of the appA phytase gene from Escherichia coli regulated for expression in salivary glands by the rat R15 proline-rich protein promoter or by the mouse parotid secretory protein promoter. Transgenic phytase is highly expressed in the parotid salivary glands and secreted in saliva as an enzymatical

A study to establish whether food-based approaches can improve serum iron levels in child-bearing aged women.

BACKGROUND: Iron-deficiency anaemia is particularly prevalent in pregnancy. The present study aimed to determine whether functional bread containing teff flour (i.e. naturally rich in iron) could be an alternative way of improving iron status. However, before testing whether its consumption can improve pregnancy iron status, the bio-availability of iron was determined in a sample of nonpregnant women. METHODS: Fifty-eight women (20-50 years) were recruited from the University. Blood samples were taken at baseline to assess iron status and participants were screened to account for other factor

Digestibility of amino acids, energy, and minerals in roasted full-fat soybean and expelled-extruded soybean meal fed to growing pigs without or with multienzyme supplement containing fiber-degrading enzymes, protease, and phytase.

Indigestible fiber-protein-phytate complexes reduce the feeding value of soy products. We investigated the effects of multienzyme supplement (MES, Victus) on standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of energy and minerals in roasted full-fat soybean (FFSB) seeds and expelled-extruded soybean meal (SBM) fed to growing pigs. The crude protein (CP) was 33.4% and 42.8% dry matter (DM) in FFSB seeds and SBM, respectively and corresponding values for crude fat were 17.4% and 11.8% DM. Semi-purified diets with 50% of either FFSB seeds or

Research note: Interactive influence of phytate-phosphorus and phytase on calcium utilization in broiler chickens fed potato protein-based basal diets.

Through formation of calcium-phytate chelates, dietary phytate-P (PP) can influence the extra-phosphoric effects of phytase on calcium (Ca) utilization. Calcium utilization changes in the absence or presence of PP and without or with added phytase in broiler chicken diets were investigated in a study that used 320 male broiler chickens and offered experimental diets based on potato protein concentrate from d 18 to 21 post hatching. Diets were nutrient-adequate positive control (4.8 g non-PP/kg; 0 g PP/kg) and 2 nutrient-reduced (2.8 g non-PP/kg) containing either 0 or 4.4 g PP/kg solely from r
