INTRODUCTION: Amyand hernia (AH) is a rare type of hernia characterized by the presence of appendix vermiformis in the inguinal hernial sac. It is rarely reported in women.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We presented a case of a 60- year old woman who was admitted initially with an abdominal wall abscess and found to have perforated appendix in the right inguinal hernia. The patient underwent standard open appendectomy and the post-operative course was uneventful.
DISCUSSION: The initial presentation of our case as an abdominal wall abscess is rare in the contemporary literature.
CONCLUSIONS: A high

Paragonimiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Paragnonimus species. The primary site of infection is the lung, and extrapulmonary involvement is also reported. When infected with Paragonimus westermani, which is the dominant species in Korea, the central nervous system is frequently involved along with the liver, intestine, peritoneal cavity, retroperitoneum, and abdominal wall. Ectopic paragonimiasis raises diagnostic challenge since it is uncommon and may be confused with malignancy or other inflammatory diseases. Here, we report an ectopic paragonimiasis case initially presented with recu

Computed tomography (CT) has been regarded as the method of choice for detecting the presence, site and cause of gastrointestinal tract perforation. In addition to determining the presence of perforation, CT can also localise the perforation size and demonstrate direct and indirect findings relative to the perforation. In this case study, we report the CT results in a patient with perforated duodenal ulcer associated with anterior abdominal abscess, and highlight the diagnostic value of CT imaging.

We report an unusual case of abscess of the abdominal wall as the initial symptom of a perforated right-sided colon cancer in a 62-year old man. Clinical examination revealed a non-fluctuating, tender, firm mass approximately 7 x 5 cm in diameter with overlying cellulitis in the right loin. Abdominal examination showed a fixed mass on the right side of the abdomen. Computed tomography (CT scan) confirmed the presence of a mass arising from the right colon with infiltration of the subcutaneous tissue by this intra-abdominal mass. Right hemicolectomy with lymph node dissection and en-bloc partia

Abscess formation is a major complication of intra-abdominal sepsis that causes significant morbidity and mortality. In such cases, Bacteroides fragilis is the predominant anaerobic isolate. In a rat model of intra-abdominal sepsis, the capsular polysaccharide complex (CPC) from B. fragilis promotes abscess formation and when administered sub-cutaneously, protects against this host response by a T cell-dependent immune mechanism. In the present study, the polysaccharide A (PS A) component of CPC protected animals against challenge with live heterologous bacterial species (mixtures of anaerobes

Studies of neutrophil migration in heterogeneous groups of septic patients have reported elevated, normal, and depressed neutrophil mobility. This experiment, conducted in a standardized murine population, measured neutrophil migration under agarose during the course of a chronic intra-abdominal abscess initiated by cecal ligation. Compared with both control (unoperated) and sham celiotomy mice, those mice with an abdominal abscess showed elevations of 22% and 14% of directed and random migration, respectively, at 48 hours. They had 30% to 40% decreases in these functions at days 4 through 10.

Spigelian hernias represent infrequent abdominal wall defects, and the incarceration of an inflamed appendix within the hernia sac is an even rarer clinical finding. We report an uncommon case in which a long-standing herniated appendix eventually progressed to perforation and abscess formation. Our report aims to illustrate this clinical transition to an atypical surgical emergency, while emphasizing that early Computed Tomography (CT) is vital for resolving diagnostic uncertainty and avoiding potential pitfalls in complex abdominal wall pathologies. Following prompt surgical intervention and

RATIONALE: This is the third update of a Cochrane review first published in 2015 and last updated in 2021. Appendectomy, the surgical removal of the appendix, is performed primarily for acute appendicitis. People who undergo appendectomy for complicated appendicitis, defined as gangrenous or perforated appendicitis, are more likely to suffer postoperative complications in comparison to uncomplicated appendicitis. The routine use of abdominal drainage to reduce postoperative complications after appendectomy for complicated appendicitis is controversial.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and

BACKGROUND Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency, and perforated appendix is one potential complication. Acute appendicitis can be complicated by perforation and peritonitis, but chronic abscess formation is less common. This report presents the case of a 45-year-old woman with a 7-day history of right lower-abdominal pain and swelling due to perforated acute appendicitis and abdominal wall abscess that required laparotomy and drainage. The presentation of this particular case is unique in that a fistulous tract formed subsequent to perforation of the appendix, with the resultant a

INTRODUCTION: Locally invasive colon carcinoma comprises a small fraction of the incidence of colon carcinoma. Complications, such as perforation and obstruction, can occur in less than 0.5% of cases and often present differently based on location.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of an 85-year-old woman who presented with an acute abdominal wall abscess which was caused by perforation of transverse colon carcinoma.
CONCLUSION: En-bloc resection increases 5-year survival, and adjuvant chemotherapy reduces the risk of recurrence in patients with stage II resectable colon carcinoma.

Cholecystocutaneous fistulas (CCFs) are an increasingly rare consequence of chronic gallbladder inflammation and disease. Historically, they were commonly noted in the literature by Courvoisier, Naunyn, and Bonnet in the late 1800s. Due to improvements in diagnostic imaging and treatment options in the last century, there has been a marked decrease in the incidence of the CCF cases in the literature. From the late 1890s to 1949, there were only 37 cases presented in the literature; only 28 cases have been reported since 2007. This case is only the second noted CCF in the literature that follow

AIM: Only a few reports of pelvic abscess as a late complication of trachelectomy have been published to date. To evaluate the cases of pelvic abscess as a late complication of abdominal trachelectomy for cervical cancer.
METHODS: In June 2005, we began a clinical trial of abdominal trachelectomy at our institution. Written informed consent was obtained from all patients. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent trachelectomy and extracted the data of patients who experienced pelvic abscess as a late complication.
RESULTS: From June 2005 to September 2017, we

UNLABELLED: Spillage of gallstones (6-40%) are common during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Development of intraperitoneal and perihepatic abscesses are relatively rare (<0.1%). However, it may pose a diagnostic dilemma mimicking intra-abdominal tumor due to their similar radiologic appearance.
CASE REPORT: We present a 57-year-old woman with history of cholecystectomy 8 years prior who presented with a suspected diagnosis of incarcerated port site hernia with associated radiological evidence of an intra-abdominal tumor. The histological examination of the resected tumor revealed a chronic abs

A 51-year-old woman was seen in our hospital because an ascending colon tumor with extensive abdominal wall abscess was detected on computed tomography(CT). On the same day, we performed open drainage and laparoscopic assisted ileocolostomy. Postoperative day 35, we performed right hemicolectomy with abdominal wall resection and closure of the colostomy as a radical surgery. After surgery, we started(negative pressure wound therapy: NPWT)to the surgical wound site; hence, the abdominal wall defect could be healed without a musculocutaneous flap. Laparoscopic assisted open drainage, a two-stage

Tuberculosis is considered as ubiquitous disease as it involves any organ, but primary involvement of abdominal muscles is very rare. In most cases, the muscle involvement is secondary and is caused by either hematogenous route or direct inoculation from a tuberculous abdominal lymph node or extension from underlying tubercular synovitis and osteomyelitis. Autopsy studies have shown abdominal wall involvement in less than 1% of patients who died of tuberculosis. Antitubercular therapy is main form of management. Surgical intervention is always secondary in the form of either sonography or comp

Early diagnosis of post-operative infectious complications was established based on semiotic evaluation, SAPS-based analysis of severity of the disease, and results of ultrasound studies. SAPS analysis of functional disorders proved a reliable tool for diagnosis of peritonitis but less accurate for diagnosis of intra-abdominal abscess. Ultrasound revealed meaningful symptoms of infectious complications, such as the presence of free and confined fluids in the abdominal cavity, increased small intestine diameter, disturbed peristalsis. High diagnostic efficiency of laparoscopy permits it to be u
