Primary leiomyosarcoma of the fallopian tube: a case report.

A primary leiomyosarcoma (LMS) arising from the left fallopian tube in a perimenopausal 48-year-old woman is reported. Primary tubal LMS is an uncommon, exceedingly rare neoplasm, accounting for only a few reported cases so far. To our knowledge, the present case is the 17th tubal LMS reported in the English-language literature. The diagnosis is usually made at the time of laparotomy for a pelvic or adnexal mass or other gynaecological indications. As in ovarian neoplasms, the mainstay of treatment is represented by debulking surgery consisting of total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpin

Reminder for the clinician: abdominal manifestations of type 1 neurofibromatosis are not so uncommon.

We describe the case of a woman in her 50s with abdominal pelvic masses suspected to be an ovarian lesion with metastases. At laparoscopy, it appeared as a possible abdominal location of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). A 50 cm of small bowel was resected to remove multiple nodular lesions. On histopathology, small bowel lesions (n=14) were all classified as GISTs. Clinicians should recognise and consider gastrointestinal manifestations of NF-1 in the diagnostic flow chart. Surgical treatment may resolve symptomatic cases and prevent local infiltration or malignant degeneration of abdominal ne

Idiopathic giant pancreatic pseudocyst presenting in emergency with abdominal compartment syndrome and intestinal occlusion: Case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: This is the first case of idiopathic giant pancreatic pseudocyst (IGPP) causing intestinal occlusion, intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) reported in the literature. Diagnosis of IGPP in emergency is a challenge because of its rarity and the absence of a history of pancreatitis or pancreatic trauma and specific clinical presentation. Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) represents the gold standard in diagnosing of pancreatic cyst (PP). Different types of treatment of PP are reported in the literature. CASE

Chylous Ascites Secondary to Retroperitoneal Para-Aortic Lymphadenectomy: A Case Report.

Chylous ascites is caused by an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the peritoneal cavity secondary to a rupture or obstruction of the abdominal lymphatic ducts. It has a milky appearance and is rich in triglycerides. The most frequent etiologies are neoplasms, liver cirrhosis, and ruptured lymphatic vessels after abdominal surgery. Clinically, it manifests as abdominal distention and increased abdominal girth. The presence of triglycerides in ascites fluid is the most useful diagnostic criterion. Treatment consists of a high-protein diet with fat restriction and medium-chain triglyceride suppl

[Primary peritoneal yolk sac tumour. A case report].

Yolk sac tumours are rare germinal neoplasms that often arise in ovary and testis. Extragonadal localisations such as mediastinum, retroperitoneum, brain and vagina are uncommon. Primary intraperitoneal tumours are exceedingly rare. We report a case of a 16-year-old girl who underwent laparotomy for an acute abdominal pain and circulatory dysfunction. Abdominal exploration disclosed a large mass involving mesentery of the transverse colon associated to three hepatic nodules and abundant peritoneal bleeding. Segmental hepatic resection was performed and the mesenteric mass was removed. Microsco

[Abdominal Pain as the First Manifestation of Rare Hematological Diseases: A Case Series].

Abdominal pain frequently poses a significant diagnostic challenge because of its myriad etiologies. In this case series, we describe four patients initially presenting with abdominal pain who were subsequently diagnosed with rare hematological disorders: namely, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), sickle cell Disease (SCD), and aggressive systemic mastocytosis (ASM). We discuss the unique pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the abdominal pain in these cases and emphasize the importance of considering hematological disorders in the differential di

Beyond Appendicitis: A Retrospective Study Predicting Appendiceal Neoplasms in the Era of Non-Operative Management in Jamaica.

BACKGROUND: The shift toward non-operative management of acute appendicitis raises concerns for delayed diagnosis of appendiceal neoplasms. Our aim was to determine the prevalence and predictors of appendiceal neoplasms among patients presenting with acute appendicitis. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) identified consecutive patients who underwent appendicectomy from January 2016 to December 2020. Clinical records were reviewed to confirm a preoperative diagnosis of acute appendicitis; cases operated for other indications were exclu

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas with concurrent pancreatic and periampullary neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) have been reported to be associated with concurrent, distinct pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (con-PDAC) in about 8% (range, 4-10%) of resected branch duct (BD) lesions. In addition, other pancreatic and ampullary tumors are occasionally diagnosed with IPMN in patients undergoing pancreatic surgery. The objective of this study is to describe the prevalence, clinicopathologic characteristics and prognosis of IPMN with concurrent pancreatic and ampullary neoplasms, especially con-PDAC. METHODS: The combined databases of pancreatic res

Intussusception as the initial manifestation of AIDS associated with primary Kaposi's sarcoma: a case report.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is the most common AIDS-associated neoplasm. It involves the gastrointestinal tract, skin and lymph nodes with about equal frequency. However, most cases of gastrointestinal KS are clinically silent and found incidentally. We report the case of a 31-year-old homosexual man who developed intussusception in association with a primary ileal KS. He was admitted due to abdominal pain lasting 2 hours. Flat abdominal roentgenogram revealed small bowel ileus in the central abdomen. Abdominal sonography and computerized tomography revealed an intraluminal soft tissue mass in the s

A Poorly Differentiated Esophageal Neuroendocrine Carcinoma With Brain Metastasis.

Esophageal neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) are a rare type of esophageal neoplasm that can initially present with vague signs and symptoms. Gastrointestinal manifestations, such as dysphagia and abdominal discomfort, are the most common symptoms of neuroendocrine neoplasms. Although there is a potential for distant metastases because of esophageal NEC, few cases of brain metastasis have been reported. We report a rare case of an esophageal NEC metastasizing to the brain region.

Low-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm: A Rare Case Presentation.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are rare appendiceal tumors characterized by mucin production and low-grade cytologic atypia. Although benign in nature, they have malignant potential if the mucinous epithelium breaches the appendiceal wall, leading to pseudomyxoma peritonei. We report the case of a 34-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain and was diagnosed with LAMN on histopathological examination after appendectomy. The patient recovered uneventfully and remains disease-free at follow-up. This case underscores the importance of timely diagnosis and complete surgica

A case report of heterotopic ossifications in abdominal incision scar.

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) develops when bone formation appears in soft tissues, usually after an injury or major surgery. Timely and accurately diagnosing of this rare event is essential due to the possibility of misdiagnosis as a maintained foreign body, infection, incisional neoplastic recurrence, and metastatic or primary neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we present a 57-year-old man who was operated for peritonitis due to perforated appendicitis, and an asymptomatic HO was accidentally found on an incisional line of previous open prostatectomy about 5 years ea

Acute intestinal obstruction and splenic hemorrhage due to metastatic choriocarcinoma. A case report.

Choriocarcinomas are rare malignancies which occasionally cause acute abdominal symptoms, mainly in the form of hemorrhage. We here describe a patient with metastatic choriocarcinoma presenting as acute intestinal obstruction and splenic hemorrhage. This seems to be the first report in the literature of a choriocarcinoma causing invagination of the small intestine. The abdominal manifestations of the neoplasm are briefly discussed.

Canine primary ureteral leiomyosarcoma treated with unilateral left ureteronephrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Primary ureteral neoplasms are extremely rare in dogs, and ureteral involvement usually occurs owing to the invasion of renal and bladder tumors. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report describes a 12-year-old intact male mixed-breed dog referred to a private clinic with a six-month history of abdominal distention. A physical examination revealed mild abdominal pain. Hematological tests detected normocytic-normochromic anemia (hematocrit 33.6% [reference interval-RI: 37%-55%], red blood cells 4.93 M/µl [RI: 5.5-8.5 M/µl], and hemoglobin 12.4 g/dl [RI: 12-18.0 g/dl]). Highly aggressive neuroendocrine neoplasm of the ascending colon: a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms represent a broad group of uncommon tumours, comprising neuroendocrine tumours, mixed neuroendocrine non-endocrine neoplasms and neuroendocrine carcinomas. While most neuroendocrine neoplasms are well differentiated and exhibit indolent disease biology with excellent treatment response, neuroendocrine carcinomas represent a rare subtype with much more aggressive tumour behaviour, minimal response to adjuvant therapy and extremely poor prognosis. Herein, we report the case of a 47-year-old man who presented with a phlegmonous ascending colonic mass and associated calcif
