Early (before 6 months), late (6-12 months) and very late (after 12 months) angiographic scaffold restenosis in the ABSORB Cohort B trial.

AIMS: The long-term follow-up of the first-in-man ABSORB Cohort B trial showed that angiographic binary restenosis can occur early, late or very late after implantation of the Absorb everolimus-eluting bioresorbable vascular scaffold (Absorb BVS). Since the mechanical support of the scaffold decreases during bioresorption, the mechanism of in-segment restenosis (ISR) of the Absorb BVS might be different from that of metallic stents. The objective of the current analysis was to review the multimodality imaging of cases with binary restenosis to elucidate the mechanism of ISR after Absorb BVS im

Bioabsorbable magnesium versus standard titanium compression screws for fixation of distal metatarsal osteotomies - 3 year results of a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: For the treatment of hallux valgus commonly distal metatarsal osteotomies are performed. Persistent problems due to the hardware and the necessity of hardware removal has led to the development of absorbable implants. To overcome the limitations of formerly used materials for biodegradable implants, recently magnesium has been introduced as a novel implant material. This is the first study showing mid-term clinical and radiological (MRI) data after using magnesium implants for fixation of distal metatarsal osteotomies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 26 patients with symptomatic hallux valg

Histological and structural effects of biodegradable polydioxanone stents in the rabbit trachea.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential biologic effects caused by the successive placement of biodegradable polydioxanone (PDO) stents in the rabbit trachea. PDO stents could eventually induce a fibroproliferative reaction in the submucosa that could be beneficial in the treatment of malacia due to an increase in its consistency without impairing the tracheal lumen. METHODS: Sixteen adult NZ rabbits were distributed into 3 groups with different survival times according to the number of stents placed: 1 stent (14 weeks), 2 stents (28 weeks) and 3 stents (42 weeks). Influence of surface condition on the degradation behaviour and biocompatibility of additively manufactured WE43.

The further development of future Magnesium based biodegradable implants must consider not only the freedom of design, but also comprise implant volume reduction, as both aspects are crucial for the development of higher functionalised implants, such as plate systems or scaffold grafts in bone replacement therapy. As conventional manufacturing methods such as turning and milling are often accompanied by limitations concerning implant design and functionality, the process of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) specifically for Magnesium alloys was recently introduced. In addition, the control of the

Stress Urinary Incontinence: An Unsolved Clinical Challenge.

Stress urinary incontinence is still a frequent problem for women and men, which leads to pronounced impairment of the quality of life and withdrawal from the social environment. Modern diagnostics and therapy improved the situation for individuals affected. But there are still limits, including the correct diagnosis of incontinence and its pathophysiology, as well as the therapeutic algorithms. In most cases, patients are treated with a first-line regimen of drugs, possibly in combination with specific exercises and electrophysiological stimulation. When conservative options are exhausted, mi

Synergistic Effects of Magnesium Ions and Hydrogen Gas in Biodegradable Mg Implants: Mechanisms, Therapeutic Windows, and Translational Perspectives.

Magnesium (Mg) biodegradable implants are emerging as a new generation of implantable materials due to their excellent biocompatibility, mechanical properties similar to bone, and the potential to release bioactive byproducts like magnesium ions (Mg2+) and hydrogen gas (H2). This review article investigates the synergistic effects of these two corrosion products on bone and vascular tissue regeneration, immune modulation, and the reduction of oxidative stress. Under controlled conditions, H2 demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the NF-κB pathway and activating Keap1-Nrf2. Concu

Antistricture Ureteral Stents with a Braided Composite Structure and Surface Modification with Antistenosis Drugs.

The present work describes the development of a drug-loaded ureteral stent with antistricture function based on a trilayer design in which the middle layer was braided from biodegradable poly(p-dioxanone) (PDO) monofilament. Antistenosis drugs rapamycin and paclitaxel were loaded into a silk fibroin (SF) solution and coated on the inner and outer layers of the braided PDO stent. The cumulative release of rapamycin and paclitaxel was sustained over 30 days, with a total release above 80%. The drug-loaded ureteral stents inhibited the proliferation of fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells in vitro

Biodegradable stents for the treatment of refractory or recurrent benign esophageal stenosis.

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal stents are used for the treatment of refractory and recurrent dyphagias. In 2007, esophageal biodegradable stents (EBS) were authorised as an alternative to existing metal and plastic stents in Europe. The advantages claimed for EBS are fewer complications concerning tissue ingrowth, stent migration and stent removal. AREAS COVERED: We performed a systematic review to evaluate the efficacy and safety of EBS compared to fully-covered self-expanding metal stents, self-expanding plastic stents, and esophageal dilation for the treatment of refractory or recurrent benign e
