Parasite-induced changes in the diet of a freshwater amphipod: field and laboratory evidence.

Trophically transmitted parasites are likely to strongly influence food web-structure. The extent to which they change the trophic ecology of their host remains nevertheless poorly investigated and field evidence is lacking. This is particularly true for acanthocephalan parasites whose invertebrate hosts can prey on other invertebrates and contribute to leaf-litter breakdown. We used a multiple approach combining feeding experiments, neutral lipids and stable isotopes to investigate the trophic ecology of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus roeseli parasitized by the bird acanthocephalan Polymorp

ParaHox Genes Revisited: From Gut Patterning to Integrated Axial and Neural Organization in Rotifera.

The ParaHox homeobox genes Gsx, Xlox, and Cdx are evolutionarily related to Hox genes and form part of the ANTP-class homeobox gene repertoire. Comparative genomic data indicate that ParaHox genes were already present before the cnidarian-bilaterian split. Across metazoans, ParaHox genes often show conserved associations with the anteroposterior body axis and have been implicated in both gut patterning and neural development, although gene complements and genomic organization vary substantially among lineages. To investigate ParaHox gene deployment in Gnathifera, we identified orthologs of Gsx

Pathologic and Parasitologic Findings of Free-Ranging Yacare Caiman (Caiman yacare) in the Brazilian Pantanal.

Periods of drought have been observed in the Brazilian Pantanal for several decades, typically occurring from May to November. These droughts impact the conservation of thousands of species, including the yacare caiman (Caiman yacare). This study aimed to describe the pathologic and parasitologic findings from postmortem examinations of free-ranging yacare caimans to provide insights regarding the influence of extreme drought on the health of this species. In total, 13 caimans were necropsied, representing deaths during a period of extreme drought (October 2021, 12 individuals) and a period of

Helminth Parasites of the Crane Hawk Geranospiza caerulescens (Vieillot) (Aves: Accipitridae) from Argentina, with the Description of a New Species of Parastrigea (Digenea: Strigeidae).

PURPOSE: The goal of this work was to increase the knowledge of the parasitic helminths of the Crane hawk, Geranospiza caerulescens. METHODS: Two specimens of the Crane hawk were captured in Formosa province, Argentina, their viscera were preserved in 10% formalin and examined in the laboratory. RESULTS: Helminthological analysis revealed the presence of six helminth taxa (one Trematoda, four Nematoda, and one Acanthocephala). The morphometric study of these helminths and its comparison with previous reports, allowed us to describe a new species of Parastrigea (Digenea: Strigeidae) and repor

Environmental Parasitology: intestinal helminth parasites of the siganid fish Siganus rivulatus as bioindicators for trace metal pollution in the Red Sea.

Studies on host-parasite systems as bioindicators for monitoring trace metal pollution in marine environments are still scarce. Here, 11, 14 and 17 infrapopulations of Gyliauchen volubilis (Trematoda: Digenea), Procamallanus elatensis (Nematoda) and Sclerocollum rubrimaris (Acanthocephala), respectively, were collected from the fish Siganus rivulatus (Siganidae) in the Red Sea, from a chronically polluted small bay at Sharm El-Sheikh, South Sinai, Egypt. Water and sediment samples from the bay, tissue samples (intestines, liver, and muscle) from each fish, and samples from each parasite were t

First report of adults of Acanthocephaloides irregularis from cuttlefish Sepia officinalis (Cephalopoda) in Tunisia: SEM observations and molecular analysis.

During a parasitological survey of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis (Linnaeus) collected from the Bizerte Lagoon in northern Tunisia, adult acanthocephalans were found attached to the internal wall of cuttlefish stomach. The presence of adult acanthocephalans in cephalopods is unusual, given that definitive hosts for these obligate endoparasites are typically vertebrates. A detailed morphological examination of both sexes using light and scanning electron microscopy revealed high morphological similarities to Acanthocephaloides irregularis Amin, Oğuz, Heckmann, Tepe et Kvach, 2011. Enteric neuromodulators and mucus discharge in a fish infected with the intestinal helminth Pomphorhynchus laevis.

BACKGROUND: In vertebrates, the presence of enteric worms can induce structural changes to the alimentary canal impacting on the neuroendocrine system, altering the proper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and affecting the occurrence and relative density of endocrine cells (ECs). This account represents the first immunohistochemistry and ultrastructure-based study which documents the intimate relationship between the intestinal mucous cells and ECs in a fish-helminth system, investigating the potential effects of enteric neuromodulators on gut mucus secretion/discharge. METHODS: A mo

Parasites of reptiles in Iran (1922-2023): A literature review.

Reptiles are among the most diverse groups of animals, inhabiting nearly all continents and environments. Understanding their parasite biodiversity has garnered significant interest, particularly from a One Health perspective. Although the highly diverse reptile fauna of Iran, comprising 272 species i.e. 89 snakes (Serpentes), 171 lizards (Sauria), 8 turtles, 2 tortoises (Testudines), 1 crocodile (Crocodilia), and 1 worm-lizard (Amphisbaenia), there is a shortage of information about parasites. The present review is a compilation of 62 studies published from 1922 to August 2024. We present inf

Unveiling helminth diversity in Scinax Wagler, 1830 (Anura: Hylidae): New records from S. x-signatus (Spix, 1824) in the Caatinga domain, Brazil, and an overview of South America.

Amphibian helminth diversity remains poorly documented in semiarid environments, despite its relevance for understanding host-parasite interactions and biogeographical patterns. We investigated the helminth community of the hylid frog Scinax x-signatus from a Caatinga remnant in Petrolina (Pernambuco, Brazil) and reviewed the current state of knowledge on helminth infecting South American Scinax species. Twenty-five S. x-signatus (11 adult females, 9 adult males and 5 juveniles) were examined; of these, 13 specimens (52%) harboured at least 1 helminth taxon, with infracommunity richness rangin

Large-bodied gastric spirurids (Nematoda, Spirurida) predict structure in the downstream gastrointestinal helminth community of wild spiny mice (Acomys dimidiatus).

The dominant helminths infecting spiny mice (Acomys dimidiatus) in the montane wadis of the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt are spirurid nematodes, notably Protospirura muricola and Mastophorus muris. Both are relatively large robust stomach worms that accumulate in hosts resulting in high worm burdens. To ascertain whether the presence of spirurid worms or their burdens alters the host's likelihood of infection with other helminth species, we analysed a database containing quantitative data on helminth parasites of these mice (n = 431). This comprised of worm burdens recorded during 4 surveys, condu

Gastrointestinal helminths of little blue penguins, Eudyptula novaehollandiae (Stephens), from Otago, New Zealand.

Data regarding helminth communities can provide insights into health, feeding interactions, behaviour and evolution of their host organisms. Penguins (Spheniscidae) are important components of marine food webs and tracking their helminth communities can be indicative of ecosystem health. New Zealand is home to 5 of the world's 19 penguin species and little is known about their gastrointestinal helminths. Here, we provide the first study on the gastrointestinal helminths of little blue penguins from south-eastern South Island, New Zealand. The helminth community consisted of two species of tape

Ecotoxicoparasitology of mercury and trace elements in semi-aquatic mammals and their endoparasite communities.

Many contaminants persist in the environment for decades or more, influencing ecosystem health. Environmental contamination with mercury (Hg) is a particular concern due to its ability to biomagnify in food webs and its lethal and sub-lethal effects in exposed organisms. Despite the known impacts of anthropogenic contamination, there remains a need for data on wildlife exposure to Hg and other contaminants, and the effects of exposure on wildlife health. The objectives of this study were to: 1) quantify differences in concentrations of mercury and other trace elements among three sympatric sem

The curious case of the endemic freshwater crocodile Crocodylus mindorensis as incidental host of marine fish acanthocephalan.

We performed the first host-parasite survey of the Philippine crocodile, Crocodylus mindorensis, a critically endangered species for which ecological information is lacking. We collected by gastric lavage samples of the stomach contents of crocodiles (n = 10) residing at the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. The only parasite detected was an acanthocephalan, which was identified as Neorhadinorhynchus nudus (n = 68), a parasite typically found in the marine fish species consumed by three crocodile individuals. Given the known hosts of N. n

Infection with fully mature Corynosoma cf. validum causes ulcers in the human small intestine.

Corynosoma is a parasite that can normally be found in the intestinal tract of fish-eating mammals, particularly in seals and birds. The present case proposed that Corynosoma could attain full maturity in the human intestine. A 70-year-old female complained of abdominal pain. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a swelling of the intraperitoneal lymph nodes with no responsible lesion. Video capsule endoscopy and double-balloon endoscopy detected several ulcerations and one parasite in the ileum, which was tightly attached at the bottom of the ulcerations. The parasite was cylindrical and m

First record of Neoprosthenorchis sp. infecting cougars (Puma concolor) in South America, with possible pathogenic effects on their gastrointestinal tract.

Currently, the genus Neoprosthenorchis consists of a single acanthocephalan species, previously found only in bobcats in the United States. Literature on acanthocephalans infecting wild felids is limited, and Neoprosthenorchis species have not been previously recorded in cougars (Puma concolor). This study documents the presence of Neoprosthenorchis sp. in two free-ranging cougars from the Brazilian Cerrado biome. In August 2023 and January 2025, two cougar carcasses were necropsied, revealing acanthocephalan parasites attached to the mucosa of the large intestine, associated with a focal, wel
