Vim-Thalamic Deep Brain Stimulation for Cervical Dystonia and Upper-Limb Tremor: Quantification by Markerless-3D Kinematics and Accelerometry.

BACKGROUND: Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for dystonia is usually targeted to the globus pallidus internus (GPi), though stimulation of the ventral-intermediate nucleus of the thalamus (Vim) can be an effective treatment for phasic components of dystonia including tremor. We report on a patient who developed a syndrome of bilateral upper limb postural and action tremor and progressive cervical dystonia with both phasic and tonic components which were responsive to Vim DBS. We characterize and quantify this effect using markerless-3D-kinematics combined with accelerometry. METHODS: Stereo video

Assessing Parkinson's Rest Tremor from the Wrist with Accelerometry and Gyroscope Signals in Patients with Deep Brain Stimulation: An Observational Study.

Background: Wearable sensors are mainly used in Parkinson's disease (PD) to assess motor symptoms and to aid clinicians in patient management. Inertial measurement units that simultaneously register accelerometric and gyroscope signals have been one of the most studied and practicable methods. The heterogeneity of described methods and clinical settings studied can discourage wearable device use and highlight the need for standardization. This study compares previously proposed accelerometry and gyroscope signal features for tremor assessment measured at the wrist. Methods: An inertial measure

Tolerability and the Accelerome: Open-Source Wrist Accelerometry Relates to Symptom Burden in Androgen Ablated Older Men with Prostate Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Older men on androgen suppression for prostate cancer experience substantial symptom burden that is often missed between clinic visits. In prior work from our group, frequency-domain features ranked highly for predicting geriatric impairment, motivating a focus on interpretable spectral measures from open-source wrist accelerometry. Our overall objective was to identify accelerometry features from a pre-specified library that track weekly symptom burden in older men on ADT, and to characterize the temporal scale of the top candidates; spectral features were of particular interest

Comparison of patient-reported outcomes of physical activity and accelerometry in people with multiple sclerosis and ambulatory impairment: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Accelerometers and patient-reported outcomes (PRO) are used to assess physical activity (PA) in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). So far it is unknown, however, whether these assessments represent mobility limitations in pwMS with mild and moderate to severe disability alike. The primary aim of the study was to assess the correlation between accelerometry and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) scores in pwMS with different degrees of ambulatory impairment. Taken its frequent use into account, the Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ) was investiga

Use of Triaxial Accelerometry During the Dance Aerobic Fitness Test: Considerations for Unit Positioning and Implications for Injury Risk and Performance.

Injury incidence in dance is high, in large part due to the frequency of repetitive and complex movements that require the lower limb to absorb and utilize extreme forces. The aim of this study was to quantify the biomechanical demands of the Dance Aerobic Fitness Test (DAFT) via triaxial accelerometry and utilize it to compare loading at the cervical spine and distal aspect of the lower limb. University dancers (N = 26; age: 20.0 ± 1.5 years; height: 1.61 ± 0.08 m; body mass: 58.40 ± 6.20 kg) completed two trials (one familiarization and one experimental) of the DAFT, consisting of five incre

Biomechanical assessment of dressage Spanish horses through accelerometry and the immediate effects of a single capacitive resistive electrical transfer session.

BACKGROUND: Capacitive resistive electrical transfer (CRET) is a non-invasive electromagnetic diathermic technique. The effect of its application 24 h prior to exercise, compared to a sham application performed with the device off, was evaluated in 8 Spanish Purebred dressage stallions. CRET was applied bilaterally on the neck, back, and croup. The horses wore an accelerometer fixed on the sternal area during a dressage test, and spatiotemporal stride parameters, total and dorsoventral (DVAA), longitudinal (LAA), and mediolateral accelerometric activities, as well as dorsoventral displacement,

Quantifying the effects of sleep on sensor-derived variables from upper limb accelerometry in people with and without upper limb impairment.

BACKGROUND: Despite the promise of wearable sensors for both rehabilitation research and clinical care, these technologies pose significant burden on data collectors and analysts. Investigations of factors that may influence the wearable sensor data processing pipeline are needed to support continued use of these technologies in rehabilitation research and integration into clinical care settings. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of one such factor, sleep, on sensor-derived variables from upper limb accelerometry in people with and without upper limb impairment and across

Accelerometry-assessed daily physical activity and compliance with recommendations in Spanish children: importance of physical education classes and vigorous intensity.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is associated with numerous health benefits. Vigorous PA (VPA) may have a greater impact on public health than lower-intensity PA. The incorporation of a specific recommendation on VPA could complement and improve existing recommendations for average daily moderate-vigorous PA (MVPA). Physical education classes could have a positive impact on children's adherence to average daily physical activity recommendations. The aim was to investigate the association between MVPA and VPA in children, as well as adherence to recommendations, and obesity and the presence

A comparative analysis of DBSCAN, K-means, and quadratic variation algorithms for automatic identification of swallows from swallowing accelerometry signals.

BACKGROUND: Cervical auscultation with high resolution sensors is currently under consideration as a method of automatically screening for specific swallowing abnormalities. To be clinically useful without human involvement, any devices based on cervical auscultation should be able to detect specified swallowing events in an automatic manner. METHODS: In this paper, we comparatively analyze the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise algorithm (DBSCAN), a k-means based algorithm, and an algorithm based on quadratic variation as methods of differentiating periods of swallow

From Single Movement Behaviors to Complete 24-h Behaviors Profiles and Multiple Health Outcomes-A Cross-Sectional Study Using Accelerometry.

Movement behaviors research has evolved from focusing on single behaviors to multiple behaviors within a 24-h perspective. However, it is unknown if 24-h movement behavior profiles are consistently associated across multiple health outcomes. Thus, we aimed to investigate this. We used data from 807 adults who wore thigh accelerometers and recorded daily sleep/work times over 1-4 days and were categorized into four 24-h movement behavior profiles: "Chimpanzees" (balanced distribution of movement behaviors in work and leisure; n = 226, reference), "Lions" (more active work and sleep, and less ac
