Falls from beds and other furniture are common scenarios provided to conceal child abuse but are also common occurrences in young children. A better understanding of injury potential in short-distance falls could aid clinicians in distinguishing abusive from accidental injuries. Therefore, this study investigated biomechanical outcomes related to injury potential in falls from beds and other horizontal surfaces using an anthropomorphic test device representing a 12-month-old child. The potential for head, neck, and extremity injuries and differences due to varying impact surfaces were examined

OBJECTIVE: Accidental falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults in the United States. Identifying risk factors for falls is a public health priority. Poor sleep is prevalent among aging adults and has been linked to falls risk. We examined late-life sleep medication use and falls risk in a cohort of older adults.
METHODS: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study is an ongoing community-based cohort study. ARIC participants taking any barbiturates, benzodiazepines, antidepressants, non-benzodiazepine receptor agonists, or other hypnotics in the past 4 weeks (2011-2013)

OBJECTIVE: Falls have been significantly associated with accidental deaths among individuals over 60 years. Therefore, improving balance function is critical in geriatric rehabilitation. This study explored the impacts of Baduanjin on the risk of falls in terms of balance, isometric knee joint strength, and gait parameters.
METHODS: Forty-two Chinese individuals were randomly divided into the Baduanjin group or walking group. Their gait, balance, lower limb strength, and fall risks were assessed at pre-, mid- and post-intervention. Any falls they experienced for the next six months were recor

The purpose of this systematic review was to examine critically the literature that addresses the association between sleep disturbance and falls. Electronic databases OVID MEDLINE, PubMed, and CINAHL were searched using MeSH terms "sleep" and "accidental falls." Search limits included adults, humans, and English. The articles selected for the final sample were assessed for methodological quality. Eleven key attributes of sleep disturbance were extracted. The search yielded 177 articles from OVID MEDLINE, 124 from PubMed, and 46 from CINAHL. The final sample included 42 papers. The mean method

Although hypotension has been linked to fall-related injuries in older adults, evidence in hemodialysis (HD) patients remains limited. This study examined the effects of intradialytic hypotension (IDH) and physical performance on the risk of subsequent falls and fractures. In this prospective cohort study, 518 ambulatory HD patients were observed over 1 year to track the occurrence of accidental falls, severe falls (those requiring medical intervention), and fractures. Baseline assessments included IDH (defined as nadir systolic blood pressure [BP] during dialysis <90 mmHg or intervention for

In general, hanging cases are the result of suicide, and accidental and homicidal hanging cases are rarely seen. This study retrospectively investigated 4571 death examinations and autopsies that were performed at The Konya Branch of the Forensic Medicine Council (Turkey) between 1998 and 2007; hanging was involved in 201 (6.5%) of the cases. There were a total of 13 accidental hanging cases, where 12 of these involved children. In seven of the cases, the accidental hanging involved a scarf that wraps around swing-like cradles and is intended to prevent infants from falling down. It was conclu

Falls are a leading cause of injury and mortality among the elderly, particularly indoors where privacy concerns limit real-time monitoring. This study developed a privacy-preserving, real-time fall detection system using a frequency-modulated continuous wave radar sensor and a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture deployed on an edge device. To address the limitations of wearable and vision-based methods, the system leverages contactless radar sensing and an ensemble of two independent CNN models, namely, a base model designed to capture the entire fall sequence for high

Background and Objectives: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder in which gait and balance disturbances substantially increase the risk of falls and loss of independence. Pharmacological treatment alleviates several motor symptoms but has limited effects on postural instability. Backward walking (BW), a demanding locomotor task, has recently been investigated as both an assessment tool and a rehabilitation strategy in PD. The purpose of this focused systematic review is to analyse the benefits and limitations of retro walking in relation to the gait parameters an

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare immune-mediated neurological condition, characterized by ambulatory problems and falls, muscle hypertonia and spasms, and debilitating task-specific phobias. The diagnostic delay is often significant due to physicians not recognizing SPS and due to misdiagnoses such as a functional neurological disorder or a psychiatric condition. In this article, we present a case of a patient with SPS. We discuss the clinical characteristics and propose ways to recognize SPS sooner in patients presenting with falls or muscle spasms. The aim of this article is to increase

Shishida and colleagues report that hypnotic-associated fall risk in hospitalized patients varies by drug class and time of day. We propose that the observed pattern may reflect a temporal misalignment between reactive as-needed hypnotic prescribing and the circadian architecture of in-hospital delirium, rather than purely pharmacokinetic effects. This reframing has implications for consultation-liaison workflow, suggesting that nighttime hypnotic requests should trigger structured delirium assessment rather than automatic dispensing.

We report super-additive impairment in participants using a joystick to stay upright and avoid crashing while riding in a motion simulator programmed to topple as an inverted pendulum away from an upright direction of balance about two axes (2D) relative to 1D. The 2D test configuration provided participants with full vestibular/somatosensory cues about tilt relative to gravity. The 2D impairment was a) only marginally mitigated by vision relative to blindfolded conditions, and b) worse than a 1D decrement in a 0-g analog condition which precluded gravitational tilt cues by having participants

IMPORTANCE: Falls constitute a significant public health concern worldwide and have been associated with increased morbidity and mortality across all ages. Identifying potentially modifiable risk factors for falls is a key public health priority. Literature surrounding the association between hearing loss (HL) and falls remains inconclusive.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to comprehensively synthesize evidence surrounding the impact of HL on falls.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library from database inception through April 9, 2024.

Vaginal evisceration is a rare extrusion of pelvic and/or abdominal viscera through a defect or rupture of the vaginal wall, and it is a true surgical emergency. With less than 100 cases reported in the literature, we present a case of an elderly woman in her 80s who was brought to a military treatment facility with vaginal evisceration after sustaining a ground-level fall. She was activated as a level 1 trauma by the emergency department, which led to efficient evaluation by the trauma team and subsequent emergent surgery to reduce the evisceration and repair the defect. She went on to recove

PURPOSE: Falls are a major concern for people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) due to associated motor and non-motor impairments. Promoting safe mobility behaviour may be an effective fall prevention intervention, however this concept is poorly articulated in the literature. The aim of this scoping review was to map out the definition and concepts of safe mobility behaviour to draw implications for PwPD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews was followed. Studies involving older adults (aged ≥ 65 years) and/or PwPD that sought to define, describe, a
