BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of female athletes have a history of stress fractures, which most commonly occur between the ages of 16 and 17 years old.
PURPOSE: We investigated whether tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP-5b), which is a bone resorption marker, can serve as a valid predictor of stress fractures in female athletes in their teens and 20s.

Blood samples containing approximately 2% and 4% sodium fluoride have been stored at 4 degrees C for up to 5 months and 4 weeks respectively. We assayed prostatic specific antigen (PSA) and prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) serum levels in 1305 subjects without malignant prostatic pathology by double antibody RIA I125 to evaluate their specificity. Variation in serum prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) level over a twenty-four-hour period was studied in 18 urologic patients with no prostatic disease. Hourly, twenty-four-hour serum PAP level was determined using Elisa method. Seven of 18 patients (38.8%) showed appreciable change with definite diurnal pattern.
