UNLABELLED: Carbapenem-resistant (CR) Acinetobacter spp. bloodstream infections (BSIs) are difficult to treat in children, yet pediatric data on factors associated with resistance and mortality remain limited. We aimed to identify factors associated with carbapenem resistance and 30-day mortality in pediatric Acinetobacter BSIs. We retrospectively analyzed children with monomicrobial Acinetobacter BSIs at a tertiary-care university hospital between January 2014 and September 2025. Factors associated with carbapenem resistance were assessed using co-primary logistic regression analyses in the f

Background/Objectives: Infections due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii represent a critical challenge in modern healthcare, with limited therapeutic options. Eravacycline, a novel fluorocycline antibiotic, demonstrates promising in vitro activity, but real-world clinical data for complex intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) are scarce. We present two cases of severe IAI caused by carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB) successfully treated with eravacycline. Methods: We describe the clinical course, microbiological findings, and outcomes of two critically ill patients. Case 1

The ongoing crisis of antimicrobial resistance demands novel combinations between antimicrobials and nonantimicrobials to manage infections caused by highly resistant pathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of combining sodium ascorbate and/or apo-transferrin with imipenem, forming double and triple combinations, against 20 multiple-carbapenemase-producing Acinetobacter baumannii strains using the checkerboard test, time-kill assay, and disc diffusion test. The results of the checkerboard assay revealed that all double combinations showed indifference, while only triple combination

Cefiderocol may represent a therapeutic option for carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) infections, but clinical data are limited. This is an observational retrospective study conducted in the University Hospital of Pisa including consecutive patients with CRAB infections (January 2020 to August 2021). Patients were divided in two study groups according to the antibiotic treatment received: cefiderocol- and colistin-containing regimens. The primary outcome was the 30-day mortality. A Cox regression analysis was performed to identify factors independently associated with 30-day m

The stimulation of the immune response to prevent the progression of an infection may be an adjuvant to antimicrobial treatment. Here, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) treatment in combination with colistin in murine experimental models of severe infections by Acinetobacter baumannii. We used the A. baumannii Ab9 strain, susceptible to colistin and most of the antibiotics used in clinical settings, and the A. baumannii Ab186 strain, susceptible to colistin but presenting a multidrug-resistant (MDR) pattern. The therapeutic efficacies of one and two LPC doses (

We report the case of a 61-year-old man from northern Australia with concurrent community-onset Acinetobacter baumannii complex and Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteremia presenting as severe tropical pneumonia requiring intensive care unit support. The pneumonia was complicated by L3/4 discitis and vertebral osteomyelitis presumed to be due to melioidosis. His risk factors included chronic lung disease and immunosuppression with etanercept. This case of concurrent infection highlights the similar risk factors, presentation and epidemiology of both infections, emphasises the importance of accura

In New Caledonia, South Pacific, Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial pathogen. OXA-23 carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB) has been ranked third among all multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria at the main hospital of Nouméa in New Caledonia (24.8%, 50/202 isolates). In the present study, risk factors and outcomes for 50 patients with CRAB infection were compared with those of 152 patients infected with other MDR bacteria. Independent risk factors for infection with CRAB were respiratory ward admission (odds ratio 2.8, 95% confidence interval 1.1-7.1) and previous treatment with quinolones

Acinetobacter baumannii has become a notable "superbug" due to its rapid development of resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial and antibiofilm effectiveness of gentamicin-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (GM-SLNs) in treating infections caused by A. baumannii. Nanoparticles were synthesized using the double melt emulsion dispersion method. A. baumannii was isolated from wounds, blood, urine, and sputum through standard microbiological techniques. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. The biofi

Infections caused by multi-drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii are a global threat. The World Health Organization has recognized carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii as critical pathogens for which further research and development of effective drugs are needed. The aim of this study was to identify antibiotic combinations with possible potential for additive or synergistic action with colistin, and thus to find new therapeutic possibilities for the treatment of infections caused by multi-drug-resistant A. baumannii. The research involved the two multi-drug-resistant A. baumannii strains isolat
