[Short-latency brain stem auditory evoked potentials in response to acoustic stimulation in children with cranio-cerebral trauma].

Short-latent stem evoked potentials (SSEP) in response to acoustic stimulation (AS) were explored in 44 children with mild craniocerebral injury. The majority of patients demonstrated an increase of the latent period of peaks P1, P3 and P5 and of the interpeak intervals P1-P3 and P1-P5. In patients with loss of consciousness, the parameters of the SSEP in response to AS were larger to the left as compared to those rightwards. Depending on the side of the stroke (whether it occurred to the right or to the left), it has been disclosed that the latent period of P3 and the interpeak interval P1-P3

The Method for Placement of an Intraoperative Continuous Facial Nerve Stimulating Electrode in Acoustic Neuroma Surgery: Technical Note.

Preservation of facial nerve (FN) function is the most important goal in acoustic neuroma (AN) surgery. We have been using intraoperative continuous facial nerve monitoring (ICFNm) of evoked electromyography during AN surgery. ICFNm is very useful, and we can identify the real-time functions of the FN. Some surgeons have experienced difficulty with placing the ICFN stimulating electrode (SE). We therefore show how to place the ICFN SE. We mostly perform AN surgery with a retrosigmoid approach (RSA). A craniotomy with four burr holes is performed. We dissect the arachnoid membrane along the acc

The Effect of Uni- and Bilateral Thalamic Deep Brain Stimulation on Speech in Patients With Essential Tremor: Acoustics and Intelligibility.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) is performed to suppress medically-resistant essential tremor (ET). However, stimulation induced dysarthria (SID) is a common side effect, limiting the extent to which tremor can be suppressed. To date, the exact pathogenesis of SID in VIM-DBS treated ET patients is unknown. OBJECTIVE: We investigate the effect of inactivated, uni- and bilateral VIM-DBS on speech production in patients with ET. We employ acoustic measures, tempo, and intelligibility ratings and patient's self-estimated speech to quantify SID, w

Evaluating the Impact of Age, Acoustic Exposure, and Electrical Stimulation on Binaural Sensitivity in Adult Bilateral Cochlear Implant Patients.

Deafness in both ears is highly disruptive to communication in everyday listening situations. Many individuals with profound deafness receive bilateral cochlear implants (CIs) to gain access to spatial cues used in localization and speech understanding in noise. However, the benefit of bilateral CIs, in particular sensitivity to interaural time and level differences (ITD and ILDs), varies among patients. We measured binaural sensitivity in 46 adult bilateral CI patients to explore the relationship between binaural sensitivity and three classes of patient-related factors: age, acoustic exposure

Acoustic evaluation of short-term effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on motor aspects of speech in Parkinson's disease.

Hypokinetic dysarthria in Parkinson's disease (PD) can be characterized by monotony of pitch and loudness, reduced stress, variable rate, imprecise consonants, and a breathy and harsh voice. Using acoustic analysis, we studied the effects of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied over the primary orofacial sensorimotor area (SM1) and the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on motor aspects of voiced speech in PD. Twelve non-depressed and non-demented men with PD (mean age 64.58 ± 8.04 years, mean PD duration 10.75 ± 7.48 years) and 21 healthy age-mat

Pathophysiology of hearing impairment in acoustic neuroma with profound deafness: analysis by evoked otoacoustic emission and promontory stimulation test.

Evoked otoacoustic emissions (e-OAEs) were examined and promontory stimulus test (PST) done prior to tumor removal in 15 cases of surgically proven unilateral acoustic neuroma (AN) with more than 80 dB in pure-tone hearing level. The e-OAEs were elicited by tone-bursts at 1 kHz and 2 kHz, and an interaural difference in pseudothreshold of more than 10 dB was defined as a significant impairment of the cochlear function. In PST, electrical stimulation was applied by a burst mode at 6 stimulus frequencies between 50 Hz and 1600 Hz. The number of stimulus frequencies with a positive response was d

Morphological correlates of hearing loss after cochlear implantation and electro-acoustic stimulation in a hearing-impaired Guinea pig model.

Hybrid or electro-acoustic stimulation (EAS) cochlear implants (CIs) are designed to provide high-frequency electric hearing together with residual low-frequency acoustic hearing. However, 30-50% of EAS CI recipients lose residual hearing after implantation. The objective of this study was to determine the mechanisms of EAS-induced hearing loss in an animal model with high-frequency hearing loss. Guinea pigs were exposed to 24 h of noise (12-24 kHz at 116 dB) to induce a high-frequency hearing loss. After recovery, two groups of animals were implanted (n = 6 per group), with one group receivin

Electrical evaluation of the facial nerve in acoustic neuroma patients: preliminary comparison between transcranial magnetic coil stimulation and electroneurography.

Subclinical involvement of the facial nerve by acoustic neuromas may be identified preoperatively using conventional electroneurography (ENoG). The clinical application of extratemporal stimulation distal to the stylomastoid foramen is limited in these cases by the more proximal site of the lesion. Transcranial magnetic coil stimulation (MCS) is a noninvasive means by which the facial nerve is stimulated at the level of the motor cortex or the brain stem, before it enters the internal auditory canal. Topographically such an assessment may have more diagnostic relevance than other forms of elec

Effects of electrical stimulation on the acoustically evoked auditory-nerve response in guinea pigs with a high-frequency hearing loss.

Criteria for cochlear implantation keep expanding and people with substantial residual low-frequency hearing are considered candidates for implantation nowadays. Therefore, electro-acoustical stimulation in the same ear (EAS) is receiving increasing interest. We have investigated the effects of intracochlear electrical stimulation on acoustically evoked auditory-nerve activity, using a forward masking paradigm. The stimulation electrode was placed in the basal turn of the cochlea. Compound action potential (CAP) recordings were performed in guinea pigs with severe high-frequency hearing loss a

Reduced fMRI activation of an occipital area in recently detoxified alcohol-dependent patients in a visual and acoustic stimulation paradigm.

Chronic alcohol consumption is associated with neural damage that manifests in deficits in information processing. Previous studies evaluated higher cognitive functions such as working memory, but basic sensory information processing circuits have never been investigated before. Therefore, we applied a simple visual and acoustic stimulation paradigm in this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) pilot study. Nine recently detoxified male alcohol-dependent patients and nine healthy volunteers were presented a well-established 6-Hz checkerboard and auditory stimuli in the form of drumbeats

Acoustically derived auditory nerve action potential evoked by electrical stimulation: an estimation of the waveform of single unit contribution.

An experimental study of the electrical stimulation of the guinea pig cochlea is made using an electrode on the round window for both stimulation and recording. The neural response is separated from the electrical artifact with a masking procedure combined with a low amplification, "statistical" averaging method [Charlet de Sauvage et al., Hear. Res. 2, 343-346 (1980)]. The high electrical impedance required for recording physiological responses implies the use of a current pulse generator. Monitoring of evoked potentials from the auditory cortex provides evidence that the effects of electrica

Transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation improves corticostriatal transmission in direct medium spiny neurons and rescues neuroplasticity of Parkinson's disease model mice.

Transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation (TMAS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique that has demonstrated benefits for neuroplasticity in Parkinson's disease (PD), yet its underlying mechanisms remain inadequately understood. This study aimed to investigate how TMAS affects dysfunction and synaptic-plasticity impairments in the corticostriatal pathway in a subacute 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced PD mouse model. The results indicated that TMAS was associated with reduced presynaptic glutamate release and with improved N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR)-me

Bilateral Deep Brain Stimulation of the Ventral Intermediate Nucleus of the Thalamus Improves Objective Acoustic Measures of Essential Vocal Tremor.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Deep brain stimulation of the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus (VIM-DBS) is an established treatment for medically refractory essential tremor. However, the effect of VIM-DBS on vocal tremor remains poorly understood, with results varying by method of vocal tremor assessment and stimulation laterality. This single-center study measures the effect of bilateral VIM-DBS on essential vocal tremor using blinded objective acoustic voice analysis. METHODS: Ten patients with consecutive essential tremor with comorbid vocal tremor receiving bilateral VIM-DBS unde

Hearing Aid Treatment for Patients with Mixed Hearing Loss. Part II: Speech Recognition in Comparison to Direct Acoustic Cochlear Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The conventional therapy for severe mixed hearing loss is middle ear surgery combined with a power hearing aid. However, a substantial group of patients with severe mixed hearing loss cannot be treated adequately with today's state-of-the-art (SOTA) power hearing aids, as predicted by the accompanying part I of this publication, where we compared the available maximum power output (MPO) and gain from technical specifications to requirements for optimum benefit using a common fitting rule. Here, we intended to validate the theoretical assumptions from part I experimentally in a mixe
