The Efficacy of a New AMCOP® Elastodontic Protocol for Orthodontic Interceptive Treatment: A Case Series and Literature Overview.

BACKGROUND: Elastodontics is a specific interceptive orthodontic treatment that uses removable elastomeric appliances. They are functional appliances that produce neuromuscular, orthopedic and dental effects. Thus, these devices are useful in the developmental age, when skeletal structures are characterized by important plasticity and adaptation capacity, allowing to remove factors responsible for malocclusions. Elastomeric devices are generally well tolerated by patients requiring simple collaboration and management. This work can be useful to update all orthodontists already adopting these a

Concept for the Treatment of Class III Anomalies with a Skeletally Anchored Appliance Fabricated in the CAD/CAM Process-The MIRA Appliance.

OBJECTIVE: Intermaxillary elastics, anchored skeletally, represent a promising concept for treatment in adolescent patients with skeletal Class III anomalies. A challenge in existing concepts is the survival rate of the miniscrews in the mandible or the invasiveness of the bone anchors. A novel concept, the mandibular interradicular anchor (MIRA) appliance, for improving skeletal anchorage in the mandible, will be presented and discussed. CLINICAL CASE: In a ten-year-old female patient with a moderate skeletal Class III, the novel MIRA concept, combined with maxillary protraction, was applied

An ORMOSIL-containing orthodontic acrylic resin with concomitant improvements in antimicrobial and fracture toughness properties.

Global increase in patients seeking orthodontic treatment creates a demand for the use of acrylic resins in removable appliances and retainers. Orthodontic removable appliance wearers have a higher risk of oral infections that are caused by the formation of bacterial and fungal biofilms on the appliance surface. Here, we present the synthetic route for an antibacterial and antifungal organically-modified silicate (ORMOSIL) that has multiple methacryloloxy functionalities attached to a siloxane backbone (quaternary ammonium methacryloxy silicate, or QAMS). By dissolving the water-insoluble, rub

Treatment modalities for self-injurious behaviors observed in the special-needs patient: 2 case reports.

Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is comprised of deliberate self-harm involving frequent and repetitive activities of a destructive nature. It is commonly observed in patients with developmental delay and a variety of syndromes. SIB frequently involves oral and facial tissues, requiring intervention from the dental team. The purpose of this case report was to compare and contrast the dental management of 2 patients exhibiting self-injurious behavior. The cases presented in this report discuss selection and application of fixed, semiremovable, and removable appliance therapy for SIB. Appliances ut

A Staged Expansion Screw Protocol to Retract the Premaxilla In BCLP Infants with Delayed Nasoalveolar Molding.

Currently, the treatment protocol for cleft palate at several centers around the world involves primary lip repair around 3-4 months of age, using presurgical nasoalveolar molding, which is done soon after birth. Unfortunately, in cases where treatment is delayed, the potential for repositioning the nasoalveolar apparatus is severely limited. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate a novel use of an expansion screw appliance to aid in the faster and more efficient active molding of the premaxillary and lateral maxillary segments in infants for whom the start of PNAM therapy is delayed, with

Effect of cetirizine, a histamine (H(1)) receptor antagonist, on bone modeling during orthodontic tooth movement in rats.

INTRODUCTION: Histamine (H(1)) receptor antagonists are widely used drugs for treatment of allergic conditions. Although histamine was shown to be involved in bone remodeling, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of cetirizine, an H(1) receptor antagonist, on bone modeling processes during orthodontic tooth movement. METHODS: We used 3 groups of Wistar rats: control group (n = 16), appliance-only group (n = 16) and cetirizine group (n = 16). Each animal of the last 2 groups was fitted with a superelastic closed-coil spring appliance and treated daily with saline solution or ceti

[Orthodontic treatment in mouth breathing].

Patients with severe alterations of the maxillary growth pattern, due to long term predominant oral respiration, primarily need orthopaedic appliances, rather than common orthodontic mechanics. In cases of maxillary transversal deficiency, rapid expansion is indicated to recover an adequate width. Such treatment improves the ability for nasal ventilation. When the maxilla is sagittally underdeveloped, a facial mask is used to protract the entire maxilla. Other ways of treatment include oral screens, partial glossectomy, myofunctional therapy and respiratory gymnastics. Finally orthodontic trea

Treatment of mandibular asymmetry by distraction osteogenesis and orthodontics: a report of four cases.

Distraction osteogenesis devices followed by hybrid functional appliance therapy and fixed orthodontic appliance therapy were used to correct a variety of maxillofacial skeletal and dental deformities in 4 patients. The patients underwent procedures to lengthen the mandibular ramus and body. Transcutaneous pins were used to activate the distraction devices. After achieving the desired skeletal position, the distraction devices were maintained for 2 to 3 months to allow ossification. Following distraction, functional orthodontic appliance therapy was initiated during growth to correct the cant
