Testosterone therapy induces molecular programming augmenting physiological adaptations to resistance exercise in older men.

BACKGROUND: The andropause is associated with declines in serum testosterone (T), loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia), and frailty. Two major interventions purported to offset sarcopenia are anabolic steroid therapies and resistance exercise training (RET). Nonetheless, the efficacy and physiological and molecular impacts of T therapy adjuvant to short-term RET remain poorly defined. METHODS: Eighteen non-hypogonadal healthy older men, 65-75 years, were assigned in a random double-blinded fashion to receive, biweekly, either placebo (P, saline, n = 9) or T (Sustanon 250 mg, n = 9) injections ove

Physiological and biomechanical adaptations to the cycle to run transition in Olympic triathlon: review and practical recommendations for training.

Current knowledge of the physiological, biomechanical, and sensory effects of the cycle to run transition in the Olympic triathlon (1.5 km, 10 km, 40 km) is reviewed and implications for the training of junior and elite triathletes are discussed. Triathlon running elicits hyperventilation, increased heart rate, decreased pulmonary compliance, and exercise induced hypoxaemia. This may be due to exercise intensity, ventilatory muscle fatigue, dehydration, muscle fibre damage, a shift in metabolism towards fat oxidation, and depleted glycogen stores after a 40 km cycle. The energy cost (CR) of ru

Adaptation to thermotolerance in Rhizopus coincides with virulence as revealed by avian and invertebrate infection models, phylogeny, physiological and metabolic flexibility.

Mucormycoses are fungal infections caused by the ancient Mucorales. They are rare, but increasingly reported. Predisposing conditions supporting and favoring mucormycoses in humans and animals include diabetic ketoacidosis, immunosuppression and haematological malignancies. However, comprehensive surveys to elucidate fungal virulence in ancient fungi are limited and so far focused on Lichtheimia and Mucor. The presented study focused on one of the most important causative agent of mucormycoses, the genus Rhizopus (Rhizopodaceae). All known clinically-relevant species are thermotolerant and are

Physiological and behavioral adaptation to relocation stress in differentially reared rhesus monkeys: hair cortisol as a biomarker for anxiety-related responses.

Increased hair cortisol concentrations have been associated with stress exposure in both human and nonhuman primates, and hair cortisol is now gaining attention as a biomarker for stress-related health problems. The present study examined the behavioral and physiological reactions of rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) infants reared in three different rearing environments to the major stressor of relocation. Infant monkeys (n=61) were studied from birth through 2 years of age. For the first 8 months of life, infants were either with their mothers and peers (MPR, n=21) or reared in a nursery using

Synergistic effects of 2,4-D and PEG-induced osmotic stress on morphogenesis and physiological adaptation of date palm cv. Sukkari in vitro.

Large-scale micropropagation of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) cv. 'Sukkari' is limited by oxidative and osmotic stress during in vitro culture. This study tested the hypothesis that moderate 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) enhances callus competence under non-stress conditions, whereas high 2,4-D combined with polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) induces physiological costs that reduce plantlet quality. A 3×3 factorial completely randomized design was used with three 2,4-D concentrations (50, 100, 150 μM) and three PEG-6000 levels (0%, 10%, 20%). The experimental unit was one culture jar

Effect of Short-Term and Long-Term Non-Physiological T3 Concentrations on Cardiac Stromal Cells: From Cellular Response to In Vivo Adaptation.

Background/Objectives: Epidemiological and clinical studies have linked both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism to adverse cardiac outcomes, including heart failure and myocardial fibrosis. Triiodothyronine (T3), a biologically active thyroid hormone, is important for cardiovascular homeostasis. While the effects of physiological and non-physiological T3 levels on cardiomyocytes have been extensively investigated, the impact of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism on cardiac stromal cells (CSCs), which constitute the majority of the cells in the heart, remains understudied. Given CSCs' essential

Sea urchin immune cells and associated microbiota co-exposed to iron oxide nanoparticles activate cellular and molecular reprogramming that promotes physiological adaptation.

The innate immune system is the first player involved in the recognition/interaction with nanomaterials. Still, it is not the only system involved. The co-evolution of the microbiota with the innate immune system built an interdependence regulating immune homeostasis that is poorly studied. Herein, the simultaneous interaction of iron-oxide nanoparticles (Fe-oxide NPs), immune cells, and the microbiota associated with the blood of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus was explored by using a microbiota/immune cell model in vitro-ex vivo and a battery of complementary tools, including Raman spec

Physiological and Comparative Genomic Analysis of Arthrobacter sp. SRS-W-1-2016 Provides Insights on Niche Adaptation for Survival in Uraniferous Soils.

Arthrobacter sp. strain SRS-W-1-2016 was isolated on high concentrations of uranium (U) from the Savannah River Site (SRS) that remains co-contaminated by radionuclides, heavy metals, and organics. SRS is located on the northeast bank of the Savannah River (South Carolina, USA), which is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) managed ecosystem left historically contaminated from decades of nuclear weapons production activities. Predominant contaminants within the impacted SRS environment include U and Nickel (Ni), both of which can be transformed microbially into less toxic forms via metal complexa

T1 and T2 mapping for early diagnosis of dilated non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy in middle-aged patients and differentiation from normal physiological adaptation.

AIMS: The differential diagnosis of patients with early non-ischaemic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and those with physiological adaptation to exercise ('athlete's heart') may be difficult as many of the morphological adaptations are shared in the two conditions. Increased physical fitness is becoming more common in later adulthood, a group in whom there may be even more diagnostic difficulty. We hypothesized that tissue characterization using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) T1 and T2 mapping would be able to differentiate between patients with left ventricular (LV) dilatation due to ea

Physiological mediators in nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)-induced impairment of gastric mucosal defense and adaptation. Focus on nitric oxide and lipoxins.

Prostaglandins mediate various physiological aspects of mucosal defense and the suppression of prostaglandin synthesis in the stomach is a critical event in terms of the development of mucosal injury after NSAID administration. However, it has become clear that other mediators besides prostaglandins can similarly act to protect the stomach from injury. For instance, nitric oxide (NO) released from vascular epithelium, epithelial cells of gastrointestinal tract and sensory nerves can influence many of the same components of mucosal defense as do prostaglandins. Thus, administration of NO in a f

Rhythm-adaptive signal processing for effective ECG and PPG-based authentication under dynamic physiological conditions.

This study presents a rhythm-adaptive framework for electrocardiogram (ECG)- and photoplethysmogram (PPG)-based biometric authentication under mild physical activity, where heart-rate variability and cycle-to-cycle morphological changes reduce the reliability of stationary cardiac representations. The approach models ECG and PPG signals as cyclic random processes (CRPs) with variable rhythm and uses the estimated rhythm function to align cardiac cycles before extracting compact statistical features. The evaluation was performed on the walking records of the public PhysioNet Pulse Transit Time

Acid-modified biochar improves the adaptability of sugar beet seedlings to saline-alkali soil by enhancing their physiology.

Biochar is widely recognized for enhancing plant stress tolerance, and using acid modified-biochar may further enhance its suitability as a soil amendment for plant growth under saline-alkali conditions. However, the underlying mechanisms by which modified biochar regulate sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) growth and physiology remain unclear. Here, a pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of acid-modified biochar on the physiology of sugar beet seedlings grown in saline-alkali soil. The unfavourable saline-alkali conditions decreased photosynthetic efficiency and inhibited leaf deve

Adaptive changes in behavioral and physiological traits during worker-reproductive transition in Reticulitermes chinensis (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae).

The differentiation of workers into supplementary reproductives (ergatoids) is an important component of reproductive plasticity in termites, but the behavioral and physiological changes accompanying this transition remain incompletely understood. We used Reticulitermes chinensis (Snyder) to examine allogrooming, locomotor behavior, egg production, enzyme activity, and gene expression during the worker-to-ergatoid transition. The first ergatoids appeared within 2 days after orphaning, and female ergatoids outnumbered male ergatoids. Ergatoids that survived to the end of the observation period

The species and physiological diversity of Bifidobacterium genus in Gallus gallus domesticus are influenced by feeding model and niche adaptations.

Species diversity of the Bifidobacterium genus was scarcely explored in different rearing systems of poultry. The aim of the study was to isolate intestinal species and compare their physiological and traits for adaptation to the avian intestinal niche. Fourteen strains isolated from chickens of intensive rearing farms and free-range hens, were identified by 16S rDNA sequencing, rep-PCR fingerprinting, and carbohydrates fermentation. Strains belonged to species Bifidobacterium pseudolongum subsp. pseudolongum and subsp. globosum, B. pullorum, B. animalis subsp lactis, B. boum, B. thermacidophi

Effects of Short Sprint Interval Training Frequency on Physical and Physiological Performance Adaptations in Male Soccer Players.

The study aimed to evaluate the effects of varying frequencies (1 vs. 2 vs. 3) of short sprint interval training (sSIT) on young male soccer players' physical performance and physiological parameters. Forty young male soccer players were randomly assigned to four experimental groups engaging in 36 trials sSIT for a duration of 6 weeks as follows: once weekly (1sSIT = 4 sets of 9 × 5 sec all-out runs), twice weekly (2sSIT = 2 sets of 9 × 5 sec all-out runs), and three times weekly (3sSIT = 2 sets of 6 × 5 sec all-out runs), or an active control group which continued their soccer practice routin

Physiological and metabolic adaptations in pregnancy: importance of trimester-specific reference intervals to investigate maternal health and complications.

Diagnosis, prognostication, and monitoring of maternal health throughout pregnancy relies on laboratory testing, including but not limited to key markers of thyroid, hepatic, cardiac, hematology, and renal function. Dynamic physiological processes during gestation significantly influence the maternal biochemistry that supports both the mother and fetus. Resultant changes in blood biochemistry alter the expected values of common laboratory tests. However, the importance of pregnancy-specific reference intervals for laboratory test result interpretation and appropriate monitoring of maternal hea

[Altitude adaptation. Part III. Altitude acclimatization as a problem of human biology (II. Morphology, physiology, biochemistry)].

The physiological mechanisms of adaptation will be reported. In a primary step of adaptation, the body reacts with immediate response, which already leads to a first classification: whether or not altitude will be tolerated by an individual. More steady biological processes follow with the same intention of balancing oxygen deficiency. They may be successful and acclimatization is possible, or they do not achieve the necessary level, i.e. that consequently developing pathological conditions of different severity lead to a next assortation of individuals with insufficient adaptability. The firs

Exercise in hot or thermoneutral conditions? Comparative effectiveness on aerobic performance and physiological adaptations in the heat: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Exercise in hot conditions (ExH) is traditionally used to improve heat resilience. Emerging evidence suggests that exercise in thermoneutral conditions (ExN) may elicit comparable adaptations, challenging the benefits of heat exposure. However, synthesized comparative evidence is lacking. Accordingly, this study aimed to compare the effects of ExH and ExN on markers of heat adaptation and aerobic performance in the heat, and to conduct exploratory analyses of within-group changes. METHODS: Five databases (PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science) were sear
