Modified Tail Amputation Technique in a Blue and Gold Macaw (Ara ararauna) With Uropygial Gland Adenocarcinoma.

A 33-year-old male blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna) presented with a 5-month history of an ulcerated lesion and feather loss at the tail base. Two 4-mm biopsies obtained by the primary care veterinarian were consistent with uropygial gland adenocarcinoma. The bird was examined at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, University of California, and on physical evaluation, the dorsal and ventral surface of the tail base were devoid of feathers, ulcerated and crusted without an identifiable uropygial gland. Complete blood count, plasma biochemistry panel, whole-body radiographs, and an echoc

Ocular sebaceous carcinoma. Two unusual cases, and their histochemical and immunohistochemical findings.

BACKGROUND: Since sebaceous carcinomas with a poor prognosis arising from the cutaneous adnexae of the eyelid are sometimes difficult to differentiate from squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma on clinical and histopathological findings, definite differentiation between these tumors by additional methods is necessary. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: To clarify the usefulness of histochemical and immunohistochemical examinations in diagnosing ocular sebaceous carcinoma, histochemical and immunohistochemical studies were carried out on the 2 patients with unusual ocular sebaceous carcinoma. Skin Metastasis from Cervical Adenocarcinoma with Intrapulmonary Metastasis and Metachronous Ovarian Cancer Responding to Chemotherapy: A Case Report and Review.

Skin metastasis, a rare occurrence in cervical cancer, typically signifies advanced systemic disease with a poor prognosis. This case report presents a 55-year-old female with recurrent cervical adenocarcinoma, intrapulmonary metastasis, and metachronous mucinous ovarian cancer who developed skin metastasis. The patient presented with skin-colored and hyperpigmented plaques and papules on the lower abdomen. The histopathological examination of the skin lesion from the patient in this case report revealed subepithelial tumor masses composed of round to oval cells growing hyperplastically in com

Predictors of Local Recurrence for Eyelid Sebaceous Carcinoma: Questionable Value of Routine Conjunctival Map Biopsies for Detection of Pagetoid Spread.

PURPOSE: To identify clinicopathologic factors associated with local recurrence of eyelid sebaceous carcinoma and determine whether routine conjunctival map biopsies are necessary to detect pagetoid spread. METHODS: The authors searched PubMed for articles on eyelid sebaceous carcinoma and pagetoid spread published in English during 1982 to 2018, and they reviewed 99 consecutive patients with eyelid sebaceous carcinoma who underwent surgical excision with frozen section control of margins performed by 1 author (BE) during 1999 to 2017. RESULTS: Local recurrence rates after surgery were 5% to

Muir-torre syndrome with intriguing squamous lesions: a case report and review of the literature.

Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is an autosomal, dominantly inherited disorder characterized by sebaceous neoplasms and visceral malignancies. We report a 56-year-old woman who underwent resections of extraocular sebaceous carcinoma, sebaceous epithelioma, actinic keratosis, and keratoacanthoma (KA)-like squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with venous invasion metachronously over a 9-year period. Because of the mixed, unusual features of the skin lesions, and her history of endometrial and colorectal cancers that had been resected 12 years and 1 year, respectively, before the present event, a possible dia

Sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid metastasizing to the lacrimal sac after 5 years.

Eyelid sebaceous carcinoma metastasizing to lacrimal sac is rare. A 65 year old female underwent excision with 5 mm margins and Cutler-beard reconstruction for a nodulo-ulcerative mass showing eyelash loss in the middle third of the right upper eyelid. Histopathology confirmed it to be sebaceous carcinoma with uninvolved margins. Five years after primary excision, the patient presented with persistent epiphora and mass in the ipsilateral lacrimal sac region. Repeat excision biopsy and conjunctival map biopsy confirmed recurrent sebaceous carcinoma of the lacrimal sac. Thirteen months after adj

Bowen disease with invasive mucin-secreting sweat gland differentiation: Report of a case and review of the literature.

Bowen disease (BD) with divergent adnexal differentiation is a rare composite cutaneous tumor featuring different phenotypic elements. Sebaceous, poroid and trichilemmal invasive components have been described in this setting and very infrequent reports of mucinous glandular differentiation are extant. Clinically, these tumors are not sufficiently distinctive to enable recognition without histopathological evaluation. From a microscopic perspective, care must be taken to exclude a collision tumor as well as other combined cutaneous neoplasms featuring squamous and glandular differentiation. Di

Cutaneous Metastasis Leading to the Diagnosis of Carcinoma of the Prostate: A Rare Case Report and Review of Literature.

Prostate adenocarcinoma is a common urologic malignant neoplasm in man. Distant cutaneous metastases (CMs) of prostate carcinoma are extremely rare with a reported incidence of 0.36% and usually they occur late. Clinically, cutaneous metastasis of prostate carcinoma can mimic other skin conditions such as cellulitis, sebaceous cyst, zosteriform lesions, telangectasias, and more, resulting in a poor recognition. Few cases of true cutaneous metastatic prostate carcinoma exist in the literature. We present a case, where the first sign of carcinoma of the prostate was CM over the anterior abdomina

Chemotherapy of rare skin adnexal tumors: a review of literature.

Malignant skin adnexal tumors are rare neoplasms which are derived from adnexal epithelial structures of the skin: hair follicle, or sebaceous, apocrine or eccrine glands. Among them, eccrine porocarcinoma is the most frequent, with an aggressive behavior compared to other more common forms of non-melanoma skin cancer. Only few reports describe the treatment of metastatic adnexal tumors, and there is no consensus about the better strategy of chemotherapy. Given the few cases and the absence of randomized clinical trials, it is important to collect clinical experiences on these tumors. Most of

Investigating orbital foreign device-associated malignancies: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: While prosthesis-associated malignancies have been acknowledged, awareness among surgeons and patients in the ophthalmologic field remains limited, despite the frequent occurrence of prosthesis-related surgeries. We aim to address this gap through a scoping review of malignancies following ophthalmologic surgeries involving various foreign device/prosthesis/implants. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a review using PubMed and Embase for studies on cancer and ophthalmic prostheses/implants. The final selection of articles for the ophthalmology aspect underwent rigo

Microsatellite instability in Muir-Torre syndrome.

Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is characterized by the presence of at least one sebaceous tumor and at least one visceral malignancy. Although a wide range of internal malignancies have been reported, the most frequently observed internal neoplasm is colorectal carcinoma. MTS and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma (HNPCC) share many clinical and pathological characteristics and thus may share similar genetic mechanisms of tumorigenesis. Recently, microsatellite instability (MIN) has been reported in tumor tissue from patients with HNPCC. In order to determine if tumors from MTS patients m

Impaired Wnt/beta-catenin and protein patched homolog 1 signaling in extraocular sebaceous carcinoma: A clinical and histopathological study.

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a rare malignant neoplasm with sebaceous differentiation. SC is classified into eyelid and extraocular SC clinically. Most studies have focused on the eyelid SC in terms of pathogenesis, treatment, and prognosis. In skin, Wnt/beta-catenin and hedgehog signaling are two major pathways in sebaceous differentiation. We aimed to characterize the clinical and histopathological features of extraocular SC and to measure the expression of beta-catenin, lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1 (LEF1), sonic hedgehog (Shh), and protein patched homolog 1 (PTCH) in extraocular SC. Sebaceous Carcinoma in Situ Masquerading Clinically and Histologically as Paget Disease of the Breast.

Sebaceous carcinoma in situ is a poorly understood and ill-defined entity. In situ sebaceous carcinoma exhibits a similar location pattern to its invasive counterpart in that most commonly has a periorbital distribution. Review of the literature found only seven cases of extraocular sebaceous carcinoma in situ. We present a unique and challenging case of sebaceous carcinoma in situ masquerading both clinically and histologically as Paget's disease of the breast. A 61-year-old female presented to her dermatologist complaining of a 6 mm erythematous waxy papule on her medial right breast. The pa
