Aberrant carotid arteries are rare vascular anomalies that can significantly complicate head and neck surgeries, particularly in pediatric patients. These anomalies may be asymptomatic and are often discovered incidentally on imaging studies performed for unrelated conditions. The failure to recognize these anomalies preoperatively can result in life-threatening complications, such as catastrophic hemorrhage. This case report highlights the critical importance of thorough imaging and cautious surgical planning in preventing such outcomes. A female pediatric patient presented with nasal obstruc

Chronic rhinitis (CR) is a common disorder in children. Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a risk factor for CR, and children with AR tend to suffer more from hypertrophic adenoids than do patients with nonallergic rhinitis (NAR). Few studies have addressed the issue of alleviating symptoms of pediatric CR or AR following adenoidectomy alone. We conducted a retrospective chart review to determine whether CR in children improves after adenoidectomy and whether children with AR will benefit more than those with NAR. Charts of 47 children who had undergone adenoidectomy for nasal obstruction and chronic m

We performed a prospective randomized study in 179 patients to examine the second-generation surgical fibrin sealant Quixil as an effective substitute for different types of electrocautery in tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. We compared the rates of hemorrhagic complications in a group with bipolar or needle point electrocautery and in a group in whom fibrin glue was used to stop intraoperative bleeding and to prevent postoperative bleeding. The operations were performed under general anesthesia in typical fashion with sharp dissection. For the control group, hemostasis was achieved by bipolar

Cases of the new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in human beings have to be anticipated in Germany. In subclinical vCJD, the accumulation of prions in lymphoid tissue has been identified prior to their manifestation in cerebral tissue. The remarkable resistance of prions to standard methods of sterilisation questions the safety of reusing metallic surgical instruments. The transmission of vCJD via such reusable surgical instruments in tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies cannot be excluded. In this study, 96 tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies were performed with disposable instruments

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a heterogeneous group of relatively rare, progressive, inherited lysosomal storage disorders, characterized by a deficiency of lysosomal enzymes which are responsible for the stepwise degradation of glycosaminoglycans. Their deficiency leads to the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans in various organs causing progressive disruption of cellular functions and multiple systemic effects including otolaryngological problems, upper airway obstructive disease being the most common. Scheie syndrome (MPS I S) is due to the deficient activity of alpha-L-iduronidase lea

The prevalence of mycoplasmal and chlamydial infection was assessed in 83 children undergoing adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy, or both procedures for recurrent adenotonsillitis or obstructive symptoms. Throat smears (surface specimens) and minced adenoids and tonsils (core specimens) were cultured for Mycoplasma spp and for Chlamydia spp. Isolation rates in adenoidal specimens were as follows: Mycoplasma hominis, surface 7.1% core 2.9%; and Ureaplasma urealyticum, surface 1.4%, core 2.9%. Mycoplasma hominis was also found in tonsillar specimens: surface 14.3%, core 20%. Chlamydia trachomatis was
