Adenoid cystic carcinoma of base of tongue.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumour arising from salivary glands. ACC of the head and neck shows a long natural course, high recurrence rates, late metastasis and a tendency for perineural invasion. The authors present a woman with ACC at base of tongue with good response to radiotherapy.

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare, slow-growing malignancy first described by Boggio in 1975. This tumor characteristically consists of basophilic cells with a distinct adenoid or cribriform pattern in the mid to deep reticular dermis. Modified myoepithelial cells with prominent basement membrane material often surround true lumina. Definitive diagnosis relies on the characteristic histologic features and the exclusion of metastatic disease. We describe two patients who presented with painful papules of the scalp and were successfully treated with wide local excision.

Sleep architecture in children with adenoidal hypertrophy.

AIM: Adenoidal hypertrophy (AH) in children is associated with obstructive manifestations like mouth breathing, snoring. Unfortunately, little is known regarding sleep architecture of AH in children. The purpose of this study was therefore undertaken to investigate the polysomnographic variables in children with AH. METHOD: 47 children with AH and 11 controls underwent nocturnal polysomnography. Sleep was scored manually according to the standard set by Rechtschaffen. RESULTS: In AH, stage 1 sleep percentage and rapid eye movement (REM) latency were increased significantly, while the sleep p

Pediatric endoscopic transnasal adenoid ablation.

We describe a technique in which suction diathermy is used for adenoid ablation through a solely endoscopic transnasal approach in the older pediatric population. This procedure has proved to be both effective and convenient during other transnasal endoscopic procedures, as it provides excellent visualization of both the superior and inferior parts of the nasopharynx and results in minimal to no bleeding in the adenoid bed. In all cases to date, there has been complete resolution of preoperative problems of infection, pain, and bleeding. All patients had good control of postoperative pain. The

Lymphocyte subpopulations in hypertrophied adenoid in children.

Adenoid hypertophy is a common feature of childhood. It is currently accepted that it is caused by the antigen-stimulated increased activity of lymphocyte B (D. Bani, O. Gallo, O. Fini-Storchi, Intraepithelial lymphocyte subpopulations and dendritic accessory cells in normal and hypertrophic adenoids, Laryngoscope 10 (1994) 869-873). The adenoid decreases its size with age but the accompanying function alterations are not fully understood (L. Zawadzka-Glos, M. Chmielik, M. Wasik, Cell mediated response in hypertrophied tonsils in children, Nowa Pediatr. 4 (1997) 12-13). The understanding of th

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland].

A 38-year-old female presented with a left-sided peripheral N. VI-paresis and negative neuroradiologic work-up. After one year she developed an incomplete N. III paresis, numbness of her face correlating to N. V1 and V2, reduced lacrimal secretion as well as a palpable mass at the lateral orbital rim. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an orbital tumor extending into the cavernous sinus. Biopsy disclosed an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland with basaloid, cribriform and tubular pattern. Therefore, an exenteration with postoperative radiation therapy was performed. Immunohistochem

Solid adenoid cystic carcinoma of the maxilla.

Seven cases of solid variant of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the maxilla are reported. Clinical and radiographic characteristics suggest origin within the maxillary alveolar bone. Swelling was minimal and disproportionate to the extensive, diffuse bone destruction universally present. Histologic features were typical of this neoplasm occurring in other sites and consisted of diffusely infiltrating islands of small, closely packed monomorphous cells with sparse cytoplasm, indistinct borders, and small hyperchromatic nuclei. Four of five patients with follow-up data died of their disease. This co

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the skin is rare. Ten cases from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology were studied. Seven of the 10 cases recurred after initial surgery. The interval between surgery and recurrence ranged from 4 months to 20 years. In one case there was metastasis to lung and pleura. Histologically, cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma is indistinguishable from adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland. The diagnostic histologic features and the differentiation of adenoid cystic carcinoma from other cutaneous neoplasms are discussed.

CT of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea.

The CT features of six cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea are presented and compared to the bronchoscopic, surgical, and pathologic findings. CT accurately demonstrated extratracheal extension of tumor, which occurred in all six cases and which was not visible on standard chest radiographs. This information was helpful in planning the surgical approach. However, CT consistently underestimated the longitudinal extension of the lesion because of partial volume averaging and the tendency of adenoid cystic carcinoma to grow submucosally. CT was also a poor predictor of mediastinal or

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the subglottic region.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is one of the most common malignancies of the minor salivary glands in the head and neck. However, adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx is very rare, with less than 75 cases reported in the literature. We present three cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the subglottic region with 6-year, 9-year, and 18-year follow-up, respectively. The literature on adenoid cystic carcinoma of the subglottic area is reviewed. Symptoms of long duration, slow progressive growth with tendency for local recurrence, and eventual development of pulmonary metastasis is common. Five-year s

A radiological study of the adenoid in normal children.

In this study the radiology of the adenoid is compared in two groups of children: those selected for adenoidectomy and those with a history of head injury who had had a lateral radiograph of the skull. The size of the adenoid was found to be the same in both groups though the nasopharyngeal airway was found to be significantly smaller in the children selected for adenoidectomy. On the basis of measurements in the normal children a lower limit of normal is suggested for the width of the nasopharyngeal airway, this is 2 mm in the case of children below the age of 70 months and 3 mm in the case o

Glossopyrosis due to adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Glossopyrosis and glossodynia may occur from local or systemic factors or from any irritation along the course of the lingual nerve. Although cylindroma is relatively rare, it must be considered along with other malignant lesions when neurologic symptoms of burning and pain of the tongue persist. Examination of the lesion is best carried out as multiple needle biopsies rather than as open biopsy, in order to avoid seeding of the skin and lymphatics of the neck. Recurrences are frequent and, because of the slow growth, there must be a long follow-up period. Metastases to the lung and brain, alt

Comparison of PAS and adenoids in patients with and without maxillary micrognathia before orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Craniofacial anomalies are widely discussed as predisposing factors of breathing disorders. Since many more cofactors exist, this study investigated the association between maxillary micrognathia and morphological changes of posterior airway space and adenoids in these patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cephalometric radiographs of n = 73 patients were used for data acquisition. The patients were divided into two groups according to certain skeletal characteristics: maxillary micrognathia (n = 34, 16 female, 18 male; mean age 10.55 ± 3.03 years; defined by a SNA angle < 79°) and maxil

LncRNA XIST promotes inflammation by downregulating GRα expression in the adenoids of children with OSAHS.

Whether glucocorticoid receptor α (GRα) serves a role in obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) remains unclear. However, it has been reported that GRα expression is decreased in the adenoids of patients with OSAHS. The present study aimed to evaluate the role of GRα in OSAHS and the underlying mechanism. Bioinformatics assays revealed that long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) X inactivate-specific transcript (XIST) was closely associated with GRα. Furthermore, reverse transcription-quantitative PCR showed that the expression of lncRNA XIST was significantly increased in the adenoids of pati

Analysis of the Microbiome in the Adenoids of Korean Children with Otitis Media with Effusion.

OBJECTIVES: The adenoid pad, which is located between the orifice of the Eustachian tube (ET) and posterior nasal cavity, can affect the development of otitis media with effusion (OME) because of its anatomical location. The aim of the present study was to evaluate adenoid microbial colonization through 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) pyrosequencing, an advanced molecular technique, and to document the relationship with OME. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adenoid samples were collected using sterile cotton from 32 children during ventilation tube insertion. Sixteen children with OME who underwent tonsillect

Molecular pathology of adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a slow-growing but locally aggressive salivary gland tumor. ACC is composed of ductal/tubular epithelial cells and basal/myoepithelial cells, which form cribriform, tubular, and solid growth patterns in variable combinations and dominance. ACC from different anatomic sites have similar morphological, molecular, and genetic changes. The key molecular alteration in ACC is chromosomal fusion/rearrangement/translocation involving MYB or MYBL1, usually with NFIB as a fusion partner. In this review, we summarize the pathology and molecular alterations in ACC and the
