INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that interventions focusing on individual behaviour change, such as behavioural weight management interventions, may exacerbate health inequalities. These intervention-generated inequalities may occur at different stages, including intervention uptake, adherence and effectiveness. We will synthesise evidence on how different measures of inequality moderate the uptake, adherence and effectiveness of behavioural weight management interventions in adults.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will update a previous systematic literature review from the United States Preven

Incarcerated individuals in the United States are reportedly four times more likely to be infected with HIV than members of the general population, and a substantial proportion have a history of drug use. Postincarceration, many struggle to maintain their antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen. This pilot study tested the potential performance of two ART adherence interventions, Project ADHerence Education and Risk Evaluation (ADHERE) and Medication Adherence and Care Engagement (MACE) among drug-using HIV-infected formerly incarcerated individuals in New York City. Thirty participants were rand

Exercise-based therapy may improve health status for people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or dementia but cannot work without adherence, which has proven difficult. This review aimed to evaluate strategies to support adherence among people with MCI or Dementia and was completed in Nottingham/UK in 2017. A narrative synthesis was used to investigate the effectiveness or usefulness of adherence support strategies. Fifteen adherence support strategies were used including theoretical underpinning (programmes based on behavior change theories), individual tailoring, worksheets and exercise b

The relationship between therapeutic alliance, therapist adherence to treatment protocol, and outcome was analyzed in a randomized trial of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy for bulimia nervosa. Independent observers rated audiotapes of full-length therapy sessions. Purging frequency was the primary outcome variable. There were no significant therapist or Therapist x Treatment effects on outcome. Although results showed high levels of alliance and adherence across treatments, CBT was associated with greater adherence. Across treatments and time points, better a

BACKGROUND: Patients with comorbid hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are at a high risk of developing macrovascular and microvascular complications of DM. Controlling high blood pressure can greatly reduce these complications. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are recommended for patients with both DM and HTN by the American Diabetes Association guidelines, and their benefit and efficacy in reducing macrovascular and microvascular complications of DM have been well documented. Poor adherence, however, remains a significant b

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) are at increased risk for HIV acquisition and could benefit from antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). However, PrEP has been underutilized in this population, and PrEP adherence intervention needs are understudied.
METHODS: To inform PrEP intervention development, we reviewed evidence on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among HIV-infected PWID. Guided by a behavioral model of healthcare utilization and using the PICOS framework, we conducted a systematic review in four electronic databases to identify original research studies of ART

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma treatment requires patients to follow daily, often times complex, eye drop regimens, but adherence is poor for many patients, putting them at risk for irreversible vision loss. A comprehensive approach is needed to address the challenges in the self-management of glaucoma. The purpose of this study is to improve glaucoma medication adherence in Veterans with medically treated glaucoma using an education-based intervention.
METHODS/DESIGN: This study is a single-site randomized controlled trial enrolling 200 Veterans and their companions, if companions are involved in thei

BACKGROUND: Automated hand hygiene monitoring systems (AHHMSs) can monitor a large number of hand hygiene opportunities, and some provide real-time feedback; however, the impact of these systems is unclear. We sought to better understand how one of these systems improves hand hygiene adherence.
METHODS: The AHHMS was installed in seven units of an urban teaching hospital, and healthcare workers, primarily nurses and nurse technicians, were enrolled. We used a prospective observational cohort design with multiple interventions, including providing individual adherence rates and real-time voice

Background: Latinas with mammographic dense breasts are at increased risk of breast cancer. This randomized controlled trial tests the effectiveness of three breast density (BD) educational approaches on adherence to subsequent mammography screening among Latinas receiving care at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Measure(s): Adherence was ascertained using electronic health record and survey responses. Kaplan-Meier estimates of the time to subsequent mammogram were used to obtain adherence rates at 1- and 2-years post baseline mammogram. Cox modeling assessed whether adherence diffe
