[Adiponectin: an endogenous molecule with anti-inflammatory and antidepressant properties?].

Adiponectin (ApN) is a hormone produced by adipose tissue, yet the plasma level of ApN is decreased in overweight and obese people, as well as in people with diabetes. In the periphery, this decrease in circulating levels of ApN induces the establishment of a chronic low-grade inflammatory state and is involved in the development of insulin resistance and atheromas. Conversely, "favorable" living conditions, weight loss and regular physical exercise increase ApN blood concentration. Some forms of ApN can reach the brain parenchyma through the cerebrospinal fluid. In the brain, the increase in

Adiponectin in children and young adults with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Adiponectin is an adipokine that is elevated in kidney disease. Evidence suggests that adiponectin exerts a direct effect on the podocyte and may play a role in the pathogenesis of proteinuria. The objectives of this study were to characterize serum and urine adiponectin levels over time in patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and to evaluate the role of baseline levels of adiponectin as a predictor of clinical remission. METHODS: This was a study of 60 individuals, ages 3-38 years, with steroid-resistant FSGS enrolled in the FSGS clinical trial. Serial measurem

Adiponectin levels are elevated in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

BACKGROUND: In addition to insulin-sensitizing effects, adiponectin influences several mechanisms involved in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) pathobiology. Insulin resistance has been associated with PAH, and elevated adiponectin levels have been described in left heart failure (HF) as a response to the increased metabolic stress. No studies have been performed in right HF or PAH patients. HYPOTHESIS: Compared to healthy controls, PAH patients have a different plasma adipocytokine profile, higher insulin resistance, and higher inflammatory systemic activation. METHODS: A case-control s

Adiponectin as a novel indicator of malnutrition and inflammation in hemodialysis patients.

INTRODUCTION: Protein-energy malnutrition and inflammation are common and overlapping conditions in hemodialysis patients, which are associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Adiponectin is an adipocytokine exclusively produced by adipose tissue. The aim of this study was to further elucidate the association between serum adiponectin levels and the nutritional status of hemodialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-three patients on hemodialysis for at least 3 months, three times weekly, without any acute illness, were divided into 2 groups of well-nourished (n = 25)

Adiponectin relation to skin changes and dyslipidemia in systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: Adiponectin was initially described as a regulator of metabolic homeostases. Further studies demonstrated its involvement in the regulation of inflammatory diseases, particularly rheumatic and vascular diseases and some fibrotic processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate adiponectin in the circulation of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and characterise its potential association with skin changes and SSc-related features. METHODS: Serum levels of adiponectin, interleukin-6 and soluble receptor for interleukin-2 (by ELISA), lipid levels, CRP (by turbidimetry), ANA (by i

Hyperthyroidism-associated insulin resistance is not mediated by adiponectin levels.

To evaluate the relationship between circulating adiponectin and insulin sensitivity in patients with hyperthyroid Graves' disease, we studied 19 adult patients with this disease and 19 age- and sex-matched euthyroid controls. All hyperthyroid patients were treated with antithyroid drugs and were re-evaluated after thyroid function normalized. Before antithyroid treatment, the adiponectin plasma concentrations were not different comparing with those in control group. The adiponectin levels remained unchanged after treatment. The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in h

Adiponectin levels associated with the development of hypertension: a prospective study.

Adiponectin is a recently discovered protein that seems to be exclusively secreted by adipocytes and is the most abundant adipose tissue-derived protein. While some recent studies have demonstrated an association between adiponectin levels and hypertension, these studies were cross-sectional in design, and the results have been inconsistent. Therefore we performed a prospective study to elucidate the role of adiponectin in the development of hypertension. The results of this study showed that serum adiponectin levels were significantly lower in hypertensive subjects than in normotensive subjec

Essential role of mitochondrial function in adiponectin synthesis in adipocytes.

OBJECTIVE: Adiponectin is an important adipocytokine that improves insulin action and reduces atherosclerotic processes. The plasma adiponectin level is paradoxically reduced in obese individuals, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that mitochondrial function is linked to adiponectin synthesis in adipocytes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We examined the effects of rosiglitazone and the measures that increase or decrease mitochondrial function on adiponectin synthesis. We also examined the molecular mechanism by which changes in mitochondri

Circulating leptin and adiponectin levels in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) has been associated with high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality; its pathogenesis is not fully understood. Moreover, many metabolic abnormalities are frequently present in patients with PHPT. Several substances (such as leptin and adiponectin) are secreted from adipocytes, which may contribute to regulate energy homeostasis and the development of cardiovascular diseases. We examined the relationship between leptin and adiponectin levels and metabolic disorders in 67 newly diagnosed never-treated patients with PHPT and in 46 healthy subjects (HS). Twenty

Renal extraction of circulating adiponectin in patients with renovascular hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic renal failure are characterized by an elevated plasma adiponectin concentration, which is significantly lowered after successful kidney transplantation. The direct renal clearance and extraction of adiponectin have not yet been documented in humans. Therefore the aim of the study was to estimate separate kidney extraction of adiponectin, by measuring its concentration in the aorta and both renal veins, in patients with renovascular hypertension caused by unilateral renal artery stenosis. METHODS: In 30 patients with significant (> 70%) unilateral renal artery

Adiponectin and resistin in the neonatal rat: effects of dexamethasone and hypoxia.

Hypoxia is a common neonatal stress that induces insulin resistance and a decrease in body weight gain. Dexamethasone is often used to treat neonatal cardiopulmonary disease, and also leads to insulin resistance and a decrease in body weight gain. The current study addressed the hypothesis that serum concentrations of the adipokines adiponectin and/or resistin are altered during hypoxia and/or dexamethasone therapy in neonatal rats. Rat pups with their lactating dams were exposed to hypoxia (11% O2) from birth and treated with a tapering regimen of dexamethasone from postnatal day (PD) 3-6. Se

Regulation of adiponectin in adipocytes upon exposure to HIV-1.

OBJECTIVES: Adipose dysregulation, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance are hallmarks of HIV-related lipodystrophy. The precise mechanisms behind these disturbances are unknown. In HIV-infected patients, we previously demonstrated a strong relationship between lipodystrophy and levels of adiponectin, an adipose peptide implicated in regulation of glucose and lipid metabolisms. In this study we investigated the effect of HIV on adipocytes, to determine whether HIV can directly infect adipocytes and/or alter the regulation and secretion of the adipocyte-derived hormone adiponectin. METHODS: Hum

Resistin, but not adiponectin, inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine release in the hypothalamus.

Adiponectin (Adipocyte Complement-Related Protein of 30 kDa, ACRP30) and resistin are adipocyte-derived polypeptide hormones playing a role in metabolic homeostasis. Their plasma levels are inversely (adiponectin) or directly (resistin) correlated to obesity and they have opposite effects on insulin sensitivity. Adipose tissue hormones such as leptin have been shown to modulate neurotransmitters which control feeding in the hypothalamus. We have studied the effects of adiponectin and resistin on dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin release from hypothalamic neuronal endings (synaptosomes) in

Adipocytokines in anorexia nervosa: a review focusing on leptin and adiponectin.

Adipose tissue secretes a large number of physiologically active peptides that often share structural properties with cytokines, and are therefore collectively referred to as "adipocytokines". Some of these are almost exclusively secreted by adipose tissue. Leptin, adiponectin and resistin are specific fat-derived hormones that affect fuel homeostasis and insulin action, and may also be involved in hematopoiesis and immune functions. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by chronic self-starvation and severe weight loss, mainly at the expense of adipose tissue. Starvation-induced depletion of fat

Adiponectin is present in cord blood but is unrelated to birth weight.

OBJECTIVE: In adults, adiponectin is reduced in association with excess adiposity, type 2 diabetes, and hyperinsulinemia. We assessed whether adiponectin was 1) present in the fetal circulation, 2) altered in the fetal circulation in the presence of maternal diabetes, and 3) had relations to fetal cord blood insulin or adiposity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We assessed adiponectin in cord blood in a large cohort of singleton offspring of diabetic mothers (ODM; n = 134) and control mothers (n = 45). RESULTS: Adiponectin was present in cord blood and, in ODM, was higher in those delivered at

The role of adiponectin in periodontitis: Current state and future prospects.

Adiponectin (APN), which is an adipokine primarily secreted by adipose tissue into the peripheral blood, exerts anti-inflammatory and metabolic regulatory functions in many systemic inflammatory diseases. Periodontitis is a localized inflammatory disease and is also the sixth-leading complication of diabetes. Uncontrolled periodontal inflammation gradually destructs the periodontal supporting apparatus and leads to the consequent loss of teeth. Recently, emerging evidence has revealed an association between APN and periodontitis. Herein, we summarize the basic information of APN and its recept

The role of adiponectin in ischemia-reperfusion syndrome: a literature review.

Adiponectin, among other diverse adipokines, is produced in greater quantity and has an effect on the adipose tissue and other tissues in the body. Adiponectin plays three main roles: regulatory metabolic and sensitizing function of insulin in the liver and muscles; it acts as an anti-inflammatory cytokine and in vascular protection, besides important cardiac protection in the presence of ischemia-reperfusion syndrome. Since many situations resulting from traumatic accidents or pathologies are due to cell damage caused by ischemia-reperfusion syndrome, it is relevant to study new therapeutic a
