Weekend effects on health outcomes and operational efficiency in emergency admissions to general medicine services of the Central Hospital of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Italy.

The possibility of higher death rates after admission to hospital during the weekend has been intensively investigated in North America and Northern Europe, while data are almost absent from Southern Europe and other WHOV regions. Increased death rates have not been uniformly confirmed. Differences in hospital care on weekends can vary depending on the reason for hospital admission, place and time. The aim was to verify whether weekend admission from the emergency department to internal medicine services is associated with parameters of operational efficiency in a Northern Italian hospital. A

Clinical outcomes of admitted patients with COVID and an opioid overdose.

OBJECTIVES: To date, research on opioid overdose during the COVID-19 pandemic has focused on rates of Emergency Department (ED) visits related to opioids but has not considered how interaction with concurrent COVID-19 infection may have influenced clinical outcomes. We hypothesized that COVID-19 infection increased the need for respiratory support, prolonged hospital stays, and increased mortality among ED patients admitted to the hospital after presenting with opioid overdose. METHODS: The 2020 National Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) was used to identify patients admitted to the hospital

Chest pain, weakness, and elevated cardiac enzymes: how would you treat?

You are making rounds in the hospital one Saturday morning when you receive a call from the emergency department saying a 68-year-old man is having chest pain, weakness, and "positive cardiac enzymes." His electrocardiogram (ECG) reading is reported as unremarkable. Because it is the weekend and no cardiology consultation is available at your hospital, the family medicine resident wants to know if you would like to admit the patient to your service or transfer him to a larger hospital. You decide that you can best make this decision by going to the emergency department and personally evaluatin

The baby's emergency department evaluation revealed transaminitis, pneumatosis intestinalis, indirect hyperbilirubinemia, and hypoglycemia. She was admitted to the ICU and received intravenous glucose, bowel rest, and phototherapy. Thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroxine, and cortisol levels were low, and growth hormone was undetectable. Factors Influencing Physicians' Code Status Decision-Making: An Experimental Vignette-Based Survey.

RATIONALE: Worldwide hospitals increasingly require a code status to be established for every inpatient. Establishing a code status should be a shared decision-making process between the inpatient and the hospital physician. However, there is no consensus on how code status should be established at admission and which factors influence the decision-making process. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To identify physician and patient characteristics influencing physicians' code status decision-making. METHODS: Experimental, vignette-based survey in a tertiary university hospital, using a self-report online

The purpose of this study was to determine if pediatric patients evaluated in the emergency department (ED) for concussion with a negative head CT scan require routine hospital admission. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of pediatric trauma patients admitted to the hospital for a concussion from 2010 to 2017 was conducted after IRB approval (1
