INFLUENCE OF OBESITY ON VASCULAR DYSFUNCTION AFTER TRAUMATIC HEMORRHAGE.

Background: Obesity increases the risk for morbidity and mortality after trauma. These complications are associated with profound vascular damage. Traumatic hemorrhage acutely attenuates vascular responsiveness, but the impact of obesity on this dysfunction is not known. The local inflammatory response in vascular cells is also unknown. We hypothesized that obesity potentiates trauma-induced vascular inflammation and dysfunction. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (~250 g) were fed normal chow (NC; 13.5% kcal fat, n = 20) or high-fat (HF; 60% kcal fat, n = 20) diets for 6 to 8 weeks. Under anes

Clinical outcomes of laparoscopic-based renal denervation plus adrenalectomy vs adrenalectomy alone for treating resistant hypertension caused by unilateral aldosterone-producing adenoma.

Previous studies describing renal denervation (RDN) from the intima of the renal artery for the treatment of resistant hypertension have reported variable efficacies, and RDN triggers renal intimal injury and atherosclerosis. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RDN from the adventitia of renal artery plus unilateral laparoscopic adrenalectomy to treat patients with resistant hypertension caused by unilateral aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA). A total of 60 consecutive patients with resistant hypertension caused by unilateral APA were enrolled in this study. Patients were

Remodeling of the pulmonary artery in idiopathic pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis.

Idiopathic pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (IPPFE) is a rare subtype of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia that consists of alveolar septal elastosis and intra-alveolar collagenosis, which is predominantly located in the upper lobes. The aim of this study was to examine the remodeling of the pulmonary arteries in patients with IPPFE. This study included 18 patients with IPPFE, 24 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and 5 patients without pulmonary disease as controls. We selected muscular pulmonary arteries and calculated the percentage of the thickness of each layer of the wall

Eosinophilic leukocyte accumulation during vagally induced bronchoconstriction.

Eosinophilic leukocytes (eosinophils) are important effector cells in allergic inflammatory diseases such as asthma, in which significant accumulation of these cells is observed in the bronchial mucosa. However, there is little information about the relationships between bronchoconstriction and accumulation of eosinophils. We hypothesized that eosinophils are retained in the bronchial vasculature in the inner airway wall during bronchoconstriction because of deformation of the mucosal membrane. To test this hypothesis we induced unilateral bronchoconstriction in open chest guinea pigs by stimu

Heart valve dysfunction resulting from cellular rejection in a novel heterotopic transplantation rat model.

Structural failure of heart valve allografts may be related to technical factors or immunological reactions. To circumvent nonimmunological factors a new rat implantation model was developed to study whether alloreactivity results in histopathological changes and valve dysfunction. Syngeneic (WAG-WAG, DA-DA) and allogeneic (WAG-BN, WAG-DA) transplantation was carried out using this new technique, and the function of explanted valves was assessed 21 days later by retrograde competence testing. Additionally, grafts were examined using standard histological and immunohistochemical techniques. The

Deposition of eosinophil cationic protein in vascular lesions in temporal arteritis.

The possible role of the eosinophil and its cytotoxic granule proteins in the vascular lesions seen in temporal arteritis was elucidated. Sixteen sections of biopsy specimens from arteria temporalis showing giant cell arteritis were stained for eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) by polyclonal antibodies and the immunoperoxidase method. Activated eosinophils were identified by monoclonal antibodies linked to alkaline phosphatase. Activated eosinophils and secreted ECP were seen in all layers of the inflamed vessels and were most evident in necrotic lesions and thrombi. Only a small number of gra

Nontraumatic dissecting aneurysm of the vertebral artery. Case report.

A case is described of a nontraumatic dissecting aneurysm of the vertebral artery, which presented as a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Differentiation from vasospasm and from atherosclerosis is critical. Dissection between the adventitia and media should be noted in the differential diagnosis of SAH when an aneurysm or vascular malformation is not demonstrated angiographically.

Atherosclerotic plaque fibroblasts derive from adventitial and medial Pdgfra-lineage-positive cells and predominantly maintain fibroblast identity.

AIMS: Fibroblasts are mesenchymal cells in the healthy vascular adventitia. In atherosclerosis, single-cell sequencing datasets suggest fibroblasts are abundant in plaques. However, their identity, origin, and fate during plaque progression remain unclear, which we aim to unravel here. APPROACH AND RESULTS: To robustly define fibroblast identity, origin, and fate, we employed meta-analyses of 54 single-cell RNA sequencing libraries, including murine smooth muscle cell (Myh11) and endothelial cell (EC) (Cdh5) lineage reporter mice with and without atherosclerosis; human control and atheroscler

Cystic adventitial disease of the common femoral artery: a case report and overview of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is an uncommon condition that affects arteries and veins. It can cause a rare type of non-atherosclerotic peripheral vessel disease. The most common vessel affected is the popliteal artery. The number of case reports on CAD of the femoral artery is growing. We present a case of a 62-year-old female presented with claudication of the left leg diagnosed with CAD of the left common femoral artery. The patient was treated surgically with cyst excision and vessel reconstruction with saphenous vein autograft patch plasty. After 8-months the cyste relaps

Anatomical relationship between mitral valve annulus and circumflex artery and its surgical implications.

BACKGROUND: Performing surgical procedures around the mitral valve (MV) annulus can cause iatrogenic lesions on the circumflex artery (Cx). The risk of this iatrogenesis comes from the proximity between this vessel and the MV annulus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relation between the MV annulus and the Cx at different spots of its path and highlight the risks of its damage. METHODS: Fifty cadaveric adult human hearts were studied. Each heart was categorized depending on coronary dominance, and Cx was classified in type 1 (Cx giving off only the left posterior ventricular artery) and type 2 (Cx

18F-FDG uptake assessed by PET/CT in abdominal aortic aneurysms is associated with cellular and molecular alterations prefacing wall deterioration and rupture.

UNLABELLED: Rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) leads to a significant morbidity and mortality in aging populations, and its prediction would be most beneficial to public health. Spots positive for uptake of (18)F-FDG detected by PET are found in 12% of AAA patients (PET+), who are most often symptomatic and at high rupture risk. Comparing the (18)F-FDG-positive site with a negative site from the same aneurysm and with samples collected from AAA patients with no (18)F-FDG uptake should allow the discrimination of biologic alterations that would help in identifying markers predictive o

Arterialization of human vein grafts is associated with tenascin-C expression.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to test the hypothesis that tenascin-C (TN-C), an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein with counteradhesive chemotactic and vascular growth-promoting effects, is expressed in "arterialized" human saphenous vein grafts (SVGs). BACKGROUND: Tenascin-C is expressed in the vessel wall after vascular injury in the experimental model, where it has been implicated in the formation of neointima. Overexpression of TN-C has also been implicated in the development and progression of pulmonary hypertension. Saphenous vein grafts are exposed to hemodynamic stress when int

Histopathology of restenosis after stenting of narrowed coronary arteries after cardiac transplantation during the teenage years.

This study describes the detailed histopathologic appearance of human coronary arteries at 3 weeks, and 3 and 7 months after stent implantation in a cardiac transplant recipient. There was modest arterial injury associated with stent implantation, and immunocytochemistry staining provided evidence that a proliferative response from the adventitia contributes to neointimal hyperplasia.

Age-related changes in the cat testis and epididymis.

Forty-two pairs of testes and epididymides were obtained from clinically healthy cats and were examined histologically for age-related changes. All of the following testicular features increased with age: thickness of the testicular tunica adventitia, the amount of lipofuscin in the interstitial cell, hyperplasia of interstitial cells, vacuolation of Sertoli cell cytoplasm, degeneration of seminiferous tubules and thickness of the seminiferous tubular basement membrane. Two spermatoceles were found in the oldest cat. Age-related changes in the cat epididymis included increased thickness of the

Distribution and variation of fibrinolytic activity in the walls of human arteries and veins.

A systematic study on the location and intensity of the fibrinolytic activity in more than 500 samples of human arteries and veins from 50 routine necropsies and 35 blood vessel biopsies was performed. Data were obtained for an overall comparison of the fibrinolytic activity along and across the walls of human blood vessels by the use of a standardized fibrin slide technique. Arteries generally showed little or no fibrinolytic activity in the intima and media but strong activity in the adventitia. Veins showed a comparable strong fibrinolytic activity in the external layer of loose connective

[Relationship between the thickness of the aortic andventitia and cholesterol and lipid content of blood and aortic wall].

Correlation between the changes of blood cholesterol and lipoid level, exerted by cholesterol feeding and changes of the thickness of the aortic wall was investigated. Changes have been found to be significant, but as it was revealed by investigation of regression no correlation exits between them. Authors believe that thickening of the adventitia in atherosclerosis is a consequence of the morphological changes of the vessel-wall.

Upregulated interleukins (IL-6, IL-10, and IL-13) in immunoglobulin G4-related aortic aneurysm patients.

OBJECTIVE: Immunoglobulin (Ig) G4-related aortic aneurysms (IgG4-AAs) are a special aortic aneurysm among IgG4-related diseases (IgG4-RDs), which are inflammatory and fibrous conditions characterized by tumorous swelling of affected organs and high serum IgG4 concentrations. Recently, IgG4-RD pathogenesis was shown to be associated with T-helper-2 (Th2) and regulatory T (Treg) dominant cytokine production, such as interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, and IL-13. IL-6 is a key proinflammatory cytokine contributing to lymphocyte and plasmacyte maturation and to atherosclerosis and aneurysm development. We

Hypoxic microenvironment as a crucial factor triggering events leading to rupture of intracranial aneurysm.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage being the rupture of intracranial aneurysm (IA) as a major cause has quite poor prognosis, despite the modern technical advances. Thereby, the mechanisms underlying the rupture of lesions should be clarified. Recently, we and others have clarified the formation of vasa vasorum in IA lesions presumably for inflammatory cells to infiltrate in lesions as the potential histopathological alternation leading to rupture. In the present study, we clarified the origin of vasa vasorum as arteries located at the brain surface using 3D-immunohistochemistry with tissue transparency.
