This paper evaluates the influence of nitrogen and phosphorous on the growth of Aeromonas previously isolated from irrigation water. A 48-y-old female developed cellulitis, myonecrosis and sepsis after a prick wound in her hand while boning freshwater fish. Cultures revealed Aeromonas hydrophila, a Gram-negative bacillus. Despite prompt care the patient died 4 d after the incident. Our case shows that the occurrence of severe Aeromonas infections is not limited to tropical and subtropical areas of the world.

A total of 217 strains representing all 14 currently described genomic species in the genus Aeromonas were tested for susceptibility to 69 antimicrobial agents by a microdilution method. The case of a patient who was driving a car after getting drunk is presented. His car turned over and he fell into an irrigation canal, and, as a result, he suffered from an incomplete drowning syndrome. He was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit with acute inflammatory pneumonia and a strain of Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated in blood. The patient's evolution was favorable. It is the first report on a case like this in our country.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a kind of rapidly destructive soft tissue infection with an unfavorable prognosis. It is usually caused by highly virulent bacteria. Recently, the incidence of NF caused by atypical opportunistic pathogens has been increasing. Aeromonas dhakensis is increasingly emerging as a new, highly virulent, biofilm-producing, and multidrug resistant cause of soft tissue infection. The current strains of A. dhakensis are causing increasingly severe disease, with delayed diagnosis and treatment.

Ivermectin (IVM) is a widely used antiparasitic agent and acaricide. Despite its high efficiency against nematodes and arthropods, IVM may pose a threat to the environment due to its ecotoxcity. We report a case of posttraumatic skin and soft tissue infection in a patient who sustained laceration after being hit by a water tanker. Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from pus and was identified to the species level by Vitek 2 and a battery of biochemical tests. The patient was an afebrile 15-year-old girl who had been quite healthy until the onset of the illness. Thirty water isolates of A. hydrophila were tested for potential virulence profiles, antibiotic resistance and Bacteriocin-Like Substances (BLS) production.
