Psychotic and affective symptoms of early-onset bipolar disorder: an observational study of patients in first manic episode.

OBJECTIVE: Presence of psychotic symptoms seems to be a commonplace in early-onset bipolar disorder (BD). However, few studies have examined their occurrence in adolescent-onset BD. We sought to investigate the frequency of affective and psychotic symptoms observed during the first manic episode in adolescents. METHODS: Forty-nine adolescents with bipolar I disorder (DSM-IV criteria) were admitted to a psychiatric hospital during their first acute manic episode. Assessment for current psychiatric diagnosis was performed by direct clinical interview and the DSM-IV version of the Diagnostic Int

Borderline personality disorder symptoms and affective responding to perceptions of rejection and acceptance from romantic versus nonromantic partners.

We examined event-contingent recording of daily interpersonal interactions in a diagnostically diverse sample of 101 psychiatric outpatients who were involved in a romantic relationship. We tested whether the unique effect of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms on affective responses (i.e., hostility, sadness, guilt, fear, and positive affect) to perceptions of rejection or acceptance differed with one's romantic partner compared with nonromantic partners. BPD symptoms were associated with more frequent perceptions of rejection and less frequent perceptions of acceptance across the

Are preoperative sex-related differences of affective symptoms in primary brain tumor patients associated with postoperative histopathological grading?

Our objective was to explore the impact of the histopathological tumor type on affective symptoms before surgery among male and female patients with supratentorial primary brain tumors. A total of 44 adult patients were included in the study. Depression and anxiety were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Additionally, clinical interviews, including the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), were conducted. The general function of patients was measured with the Karnofsky Performance Status scale (KPS). All measures were obtained before su

Loss of NMDA receptors in dopamine neurons leads to the development of affective disorder-like symptoms in mice.

The role of changes in dopamine neuronal activity during the development of symptoms in affective disorders remains controversial. Here, we show that inactivation of NMDA receptors on dopaminergic neurons in adult mice led to the development of affective disorder-like symptoms. The loss of NMDA receptors altered activity and caused complete NMDA-insensitivity in dopamine-like neurons. Mutant mice exhibited increased immobility in the forced swim test and a decrease in social interactions. Mutation also led to reduced saccharin intake, however the preference of sweet taste was not significantly

Cognitive-affective neuroscience of somatization disorder and functional somatic syndromes: reconceptualizing the triad of depression-anxiety-somatic symptoms.

Somatization disorder is a somatoform disorder that overlaps with a number of functional somatic syndromes and has high comorbidity with major depression and anxiety disorders. Proposals have been made for revising the category of somatoform disorders, for simplifying the criteria for somatization disorder, and for emphasizing the unitary nature of the functional somatic syndromes in future classifications. A review of the cognitive-affective neuroscience of somatization disorder and related conditions suggests that overlapping psychobiological mechanisms mediate depression, anxiety, and somat

Factors Affecting Negative Symptoms in Schizophrenia and Their Relationship with Anxiety and Depression.

OBJECTIVE: Negative symptoms significantly impair daily functioning and worsen clinical outcomes. Meanwhile, these symptoms are closely linked to anxiety and depression, further complicating prognosis. The mechanisms underlying these relationships remain unclear. This study aims to identify the factors influencing negative symptoms in schizophrenia and examine their relationship with anxiety and depression to guide more effective interventions and improve patient outcomes. METHODS: This study recruited 300 inpatients with schizophrenia from October 2022 to May 2023. Sociodemographic data and

COVID-19 induces gastrointestinal symptoms and affects patients' prognosis.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection caused the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Gastrointestinal (GI) involvement is common among patients with COVID-19, and GI symptoms can appear earlier than respiratory symptoms. Except for direct infectious effects, patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 are at risk of complications requiring gastroenterological management. Diarrhea is the most common GI symptom in patients with COVID-19 and occurs in up to half of them. Other GI symptoms, such as anorexia, discomfort, nausea, abdominal pain, loss of taste sens

Yes: The Symptoms of OCD and Depression Are Discrete and Not Exclusively Negative Affectivity.

Although Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Depression are classified as separate disorders, the high incidence of co-morbidity and the strong correlations between measures of each has led to debate about the nature of their relationship. Some authors have proposed that OCD is in fact a mood disorder while others have suggested that the two disorders are grounded in negative affectivity. A third proposition is that depression is an essential part of OCD but that OCD is a separate disorder from depression. The aim in this study was to investigate these diverse propositions in a non-clinica

Psychiatric symptoms and quality of life in patients affected by epidermolysis bullosa.

The aim of our study was to provide a psychosocial and psychiatric evaluation of patients with epidermolysis bullosa (EB; a rare genetic disorder characterized by skin fragility), to assess psychological status, ascertain the presence of any psychiatric disorders and understand the impact of EB on quality of life. Twenty-five patients were assessed using a case record form and several standardized instruments. In 82% of patients, EB had a negative impact on quality of life and 80% of patients experienced psychiatric symptoms. Our findings revealed a high prevalence of psychosocial problems and

Female hormones affect symptom severity in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

There is circumstantial evidence that reproductive events can influence symptom severity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We sent self-report questionnaires to 350 female outpatients with OCD to examine the relationship between the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, menopause, hormonal contraceptives, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and symptom severity of OCD. Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale scores were used at three serial time points during the menstrual cycle to assess symptom severity. One hundred and one out of 350 questionnaires (29%) were returned and completed. Forty-nin

Display color affects motion sickness symptoms in an optokinetic drum.

BACKGROUND: Many stationary participants who view the patterned interior of a rotating cylinder (optokinetic drum) experience motion sickness (MS) symptoms. Most drum interiors have consisted of black and white patterns. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of chromaticity on MS onset and severity. METHODS: There were 12 individuals who participated in the experiment (4 men, 8 women, mean age = 25). Keeping rotation speed constant (5 RPM), the color of vertical stripes in an optokinetic drum was manipulated. There were three conditions used: 1) alternating black and white st

Cannabis affects the severity of schizophrenic symptoms: results of a clinical survey.

Data on the history of cannabis use and a spot urine test for cannabinoids were obtained for 137 schizophrenics in treatment. Subjects who were using cannabis during the 6-month observation period presented with a significantly higher degree of delusional and hallucinatory activity than those who did not. Moreover, the group using cannabis made a higher average number of visits to the hospital during the same period. The status of cannabis use appeared to contribute to such variance more than did other relevant factors (age, stage of the illness, amount of medication prescribed, occasional use

The Affective Semiosis of the Hypoglycemic Symptom in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) involves a complex treatment because its daily management requires patients to maintain a delicate balance to avoid the symptomatic discomfort of hypoglycemia. Although hypoglycemia has been studied from a biomedical perspective, there is limited research related to the meaning construction and affective regulation processes associated with it. The present study aims to understand the affective-semiotic processes involved in the hypoglycemic symptom of T1DM by analyzing its dynamic organization and affective-semiotic regulation. Methodologically, an idiographic

Affective, biological, and cognitive predictors of depressive symptom trajectories in adolescence.

Heterogeneity in the longitudinal course of depressive symptoms was examined using latent growth mixture modeling among a community sample of 382 U.S. youth from ages 11 to 18 (52.1 % female). Three latent trajectory classes were identified: Stable Low (51 %; displayed low depressive symptoms at all assessments), Increasing (37 %; reported low depressive symptoms at age 11, but then significantly higher depressive symptoms than the Stable Low class at ages 13, 15, and 18), and Early High (12 %; reported high early depressive symptoms at age 11, followed by symptoms that declined over time yet

Age affects presenting symptoms of achalasia and outcomes after myotomy.

Older patients with achalasia presumably have had a longer, more indolent course than younger patients. This study was undertaken to determine the impact of patient age and duration of symptoms on symptom severity and outcome after Heller myotomy. Two hundred sixty-two patients (142 men and 120 women), of average age 49 years +/- 17.7 (SD), have undergone laparoscopic Heller myotomy. Patients scored their symptoms using a Likert scale and subjectively rated their overall outcome. Data are presented as median, mean +/- SD, when appropriate. Follow-up is 25 months, 32 months +/- 28.7. Symptom se

Effect of high-frequency stellate ganglion block on sleep and affective symptoms in insomnia disorder: a prospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia disorder imposes substantial health burdens, while current pharmacotherapies risk adverse effects and cognitive behavioral therapy face implementation barriers. Stellate ganglion block (SGB) modulates autonomic function and sleep architecture but lacks evidence for optimized protocols. This pilot study evaluates the feasibility and preliminary clinical outcomes of a high-frequency SGB protocol for improving sleep, anxiety, and depression in insomnia disorder. METHODS: A single-center, prospective single-arm trial enrolled 72 patients diagnosed with insomnia disorder accord

The Effect of Cognitive-Affective Factors on PTSD and Alcohol Use Symptoms: An Investigation on Rumination, Suppression, and Reappraisal.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are mental health conditions that often co-occur. The complexity of this comorbidity is well-documented, though the role of malleable cognitive-affective factors in PTSD/AUD warrants further study. Specifically, attaining a more comprehensive understanding of the role of malleable cognitive-affective factors in individuals with symptoms of PTSD/AUD may have important implications for future research, such as in treatment-seeking individuals. Extant examinations of cognitive-affective factors have demonstrated uniqu

Childhood emotional maltreatment and subsequent affective symptoms among chinese male drug users: The roles of impulsivity and psychological resilience.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood emotional maltreatment (CEM) has been widely linked to later affective symptoms. What still remains inadequately understood are the potential nuanced differences in the consequences of childhood emotional abuse (CEM-A) versus childhood emotional neglect (CEM-N) and the implicated mechanisms. Research with non-Western, clinical samples also remains scarce. Thus, we examined the associations of CEM-A and CEM-N with later affective symptoms among Chinese male drug users and tested impulsivity and psychological resilience as potential mediators and moderators. METHOD: Structu
