Is social media the new wet market? Social media platforms facilitate the online sale of bushmeat in West Africa.

Social media provides a platform for wildlife crime syndicates to access a global consumer-driven market. Whilst studies have uncovered the online trade in wildlife, the availability of wild meat (bushmeat) has not been assessed. To investigate the sale of wild meat online, we analysed 563 posts published between 2018 and 2022 from six West African Facebook pages selected using predetermined search criteria. Across 1511 images and 18 videos, we visually identified 25 bushmeat species-level taxa including mammals (six Rodentia, five Artiodactyla, three Carnivora, two Pholidota, one Primate, two

Identifying groups of people with similar sociobehavioural characteristics in Malawi to inform HIV interventions: a latent class analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Within many sub-Saharan African countries including Malawi, HIV prevalence varies widely between regions. This variability may be related to the distribution of population groups with specific sociobehavioural characteristics that influence the transmission of HIV and the uptake of prevention. In this study, we intended to identify groups of people in Malawi with similar risk profiles. METHODS: We used data from the Demographic and Health Survey in Malawi (2015 to 2016), and stratified the analysis by sex. We considered demographic, socio-behavioural and HIV-related variables. U

A phenome-wide association and Mendelian randomisation study of alcohol use variants in a diverse cohort comprising over 3 million individuals.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is associated with numerous negative social and health outcomes. These associations may be direct consequences of drinking, or they may reflect common genetic factors that influence both alcohol consumption and other outcomes. METHODS: We performed exploratory phenome-wide association studies (PheWAS) of three of the best studied protective single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes encoding ethanol metabolising enzymes (ADH1B: rs1229984-T, rs2066702-A; ADH1C: rs698-T) using up to 1109 health outcomes across 28 phenotypic categories (e.g., substance-use, m

Genomics Reveal Population Crash and Range Contraction in Elusive Fijian Hylaeus Bees.

The conservation of pollinators is of particular interest due to their keystone role in ecosystem function, but is hindered by systematic geographic and methodological biases such that baseline data are not often readily available. Islands are useful as simplified systems to understand evolutionary processes, are known to host higher bee species richness per unit area than mainland regions, and have disproportionate representation of threatened species. We used low-lying and canopy sampling paired with mitochondrial and genomic data to assess a recently discovered clade of canopy-specialist Fi

Systemic infection of Prohemistomum vivax and Cyanodiplostomum encysted metacercariae in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) from a heavily polluted drain at Giza, Egypt: morphological, molecular and histopathological study.

Aquatic environmental pollution could be a direct trigger of infection through cercarial invasion to skin / gills or indirectly as a predisposing factor that damage the physical barriers of targeted fish resulting in high intensities of EMC infections in all fish vital organs. In the current study, a total of 150 African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) were randomly collected from Mariotteya drain all the way through the Egyptian township of Shabramant located at the historical heart of Giza. Catfish samples were collected in mid-summer during the period from June to July 2024. A well-documented

Tension band plating of an anterior tibial stress fracture nonunion in an elite athlete, initially treated with intramedullary nailing: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Leg pain in athletes is a common condition and is often related to tibial stress fracture. When non-operative treatment fails, the optimal surgical treatment is controversial. The aim of this study was to report a case of tension band plating of an anterior tibial stress fracture nonunion, treated previously with intramedullary nailing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case in which tension band plating was placed without removing the preexisting intramedullary nail. CASE PRESENTATION: The tibial shaft is a common location of stress fracture in athletes. An

[The conservative treatment of femur fractures by Perkins traction. Management in adverse situations].

In adverse situations and in hospitals of less prosperous countries, the operative treatment of fractures may for many reasons not be possible and conservative procedures remain the treatment of choice. This applies to the rule that under difficult conditions fracture treatment should be as conservative as possible and as operative as necessary, if at all feasible. This report goes on 109 Patients with femur fractures consecutively treated by Perkins traction in East African hospitals between Nov. 1991 and Sept. 1999. Out of them, 44 patients had wide open fractures, 41 of them caused by explo

Impact of infectious disease epidemics on tuberculosis diagnostic, management, and prevention services: experiences and lessons from the 2014-2015 Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Global Tuberculosis Report 2015 states that 28% of the world's 9.6 million new tuberculosis (TB) cases are in the WHO Africa Region. The Mano River Union (MRU) countries of West Africa-Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia-have made incremental sustained investments into TB control programmes over the past two decades. The devastating Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak of 2014-2015 in West Africa impacted significantly on all sectors of the healthcare systems in the MRU countries, including the TB prevention and control programmes. The EVD outbreak also had an a

Mpox in Africa: one year continental response outcomes and way forward.

BACKGROUND: Following the declaration of mpox as both a global and continental public health emergency in August 2024, the Joint Incident Management Support Team (IMST), co-led by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the WHO, was activated in Kinshasa, DRC to coordinate the continental mpox response. This article highlights the first year's epidemiological and operational findings. METHODS: Key performance indicators across eight IMST pillars (coordination, surveillance, laboratory, case management, infection prevention and control, risk communication and com

Sub-national analysis of intimate partner violence and termination of pregnancy among ever-in-union women in South Africa.

South Africa has one of the highest intimate partner violence (IPV) prevalence in Africa. Studies have linked IPV with negative health and socio-economic outcomes, especially during pregnancy which often led to termination of pregnancy (TOP). However, sub-national differences in the relationship between IPV and TOP have not been adequately examined in South Africa. The study aimed to examine subnational variations of the association between IPV and TOP in South Africa. Data were extracted for 2354 ever-in-union women aged 15–49 years with valid and complete information on the domestic violence

The survival penalty: Age-based inequities in hypertension and diabetes management in African health systems (1990-2022) - a secondary quantitative analysis.

Africa is experiencing rapid population ageing, yet many health systems remain oriented towards acute and infectious disease care. Whether population-level indicators of hypertension and diabetes management remain comparable across older age groups is unclear. We assessed age-associated differences in chronic disease care cascade indicators across African Union member states using age-stratified estimates from the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC). We analysed country-year estimates for hypertension (1990-2019) and diabetes (1990-2022), comparing a working-age reference group (50-54 yea

Morbidity burden of imported chronic schistosomiasis among West African migrants.

BACKGROUND: Past exposure to schistosomiasis is frequent among migrants from endemic countries, and chronic untreated infection may lead to long-term morbidities. METHODS: We carried out a prospective population-based cross-sectional study among migrants from endemic Sub-Saharan countries living in Barcelona, Spain. Participants had not been previously diagnosed or treated for schistosomiasis. Clinical signs and symptoms were scrutinised through a systematic revision of electronic medical records and an on-site standardised questionnaire, and blood and urine samples were screened for Schistos

Discursive constructions of employee mental health in South African labour legislation and organizational policy: implications for psychosocial safety climate.

South African labour legislation and organizational policies provide fragmented and largely reactive entry points for employee mental health protection, yet the discursive mechanisms through which this pattern is reproduced remain underexamined. This study reports a qualitative documentary analysis of how legislative and organizational policy texts construct employee mental health in South Africa and considers the implications of these constructions for psychosocial safety climate (PSC) and the constitutional rights to dignity, equality, and access to healthcare services. A Fairclough-informed

Defining exposure for estimating the global burden of alcohol consumption: plausibility testing of WHO methodology using ASEAN countries as a case study.

BACKGROUND: Comparative risk assessments (CRAs) provide important information for shaping alcohol control policies. Underlying their CRAs, the WHO uses a standardised methodology to assess and detail the levels of alcohol use for all countries and for various regions. This publication uses a case study approach on the member states of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to examine potential biases resulting from the methodology employed by the WHO in calculating exposure values for their CRAs. METHODS: Researchers from each of the 10 ASEAN member states identified large popula

Women's attitudes towards negotiating safe sexual practices in Nigeria: Do family structure and decision-making autonomy play a role?

BACKGROUND: The risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is related to women's sexual attitudes, beliefs, and power dynamics within marriages in developing countries. Despite the interventions towards improving women's sexual health and well-being, women are disproportionately affected by the risk of STIs transmission compared with their male counterparts in most sub-Saharan African countries including Nigeria. This study examined the roles of family structure and decision-making autonomy on women's attitudes towards negotiating s

RECENT CHANGES IN INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN EUROPEAN WILDLIFE.

Many infectious diseases originating from, or carried by, wildlife affect wildlife conservation and biodiversity, livestock health, or human health. We provide an update on changes in the epidemiology of 25 selected infectious, wildlife-related diseases in Europe (from 2010-16) that had an impact, or may have a future impact, on the health of wildlife, livestock, and humans. These pathogens were selected based on their: 1) identification in recent Europe-wide projects as important surveillance targets, 2) inclusion in European Union legislation as pathogens requiring obligatory surveillance, 3

Incidence, prevalence, burden, and disability rate of neural tube defects in sub-Saharan Africa, 1990-2021: understanding epidemiology.

OBJECTIVE: Neural tube defects (NTDs) represent a significant global concern, impacting an estimated 300,000 individuals each year. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is considerably affected due to various biopsychosocial factors, dietary issues such as folic acid deficiency, and fumonisin-contaminated maize consumption, and sex-based disparities. This study sought to understand epidemiology and trends in NTD in SSA from 1990 to 2021. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease database was utilized to obtain epidemiological data on the variables of interest, which included disability-adjusted life years (D

Are parenting programmes effective at scale? Associations with violence against adolescent girls, parenting and mental health in real-world delivery across eight African countries: a meta-analysis of pre-post surveys.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based parenting programmes are widely used to prevent violence against children and improve parenting and mental health. Despite hundreds of randomised trials, little is known about their outcomes when delivered at scale within routine delivery. This study assesses the WHO-endorsed and UNICEF-endorsed Parenting for Lifelong Health programme for caregivers and adolescents, delivered through non-governmental organisation and government in Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with support from th

Lifetime HIV testing frequency among women in Sub-Saharan Africa: A DHS-based analysis using zero-inflated negative binomial regression.

BACKGROUND: HIV testing is an essential component of HIV prevention and care, yet lifetime testing frequency remains low in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study examines the factors influencing lifetime HIV testing frequency among reproductive-age women in SSA. METHODS: We analyzed the most recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from nine sub-Saharan African countries, with an overall weighted sample of 158,722 women aged 15-49. The dependent variable was the lifetime number of HIV tests, and Zero-Inflated Negative Binomial (ZINB) regression was used. Model selection was based on Aka
