Maternal and Placental Risk Factors for Small Gestational Age and Fetal Malnutrition.

AIMS: This case-control study was conducted to identify maternal and placental risk factors of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and fetal malnutrition. METHODS: Cases comprised 104 consecutively delivered SGA neonates (determined as per INTERGROWTH- 21st standard). An equal number of next-born gestation and gender-matched appropriatefor- gestational age (AGA) neonates served as controls. Maternal risk factors were enquired, and placentae were evaluated by clinical and histopathological examination. Nutrition of the neonates was assessed by the clinical assessment of nutrition (CAN) score. Univ

Large for gestational age presenting twin: Risk factors, maternal and perinatal outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: In singleton pregnancies, delivery of large for gestational age (LGA) newborn is associated with various adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, yet data regarding LGA in twin pregnancies is scarce. We aimed at evaluating maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with LGA presenting twin. STUDY DESIGN: A multicenter retrospective computerized database study in two university-affiliated obstetrical centers, between 2005 and 2021. Parturients with di-amniotic twin pregnancy who had a trial of vaginal delivery were included. Maternal and neonatal outcomes of parturients with LGA prese

Prognostic Factors in Elderly Patients With Guillain-Barré Syndrome: Does Age Matter?

INTRODUCTION: Twenty to 40% of Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS) patients will not be able to walk independently despite effective treatment. Older patients carry additional risks for worse outcomes. METHODS: A single center, ambispective cohort study was performed. Only subjects ≥18 years with a 3-month follow-up were included. Elderly patients were considered as a whole if ≥ 60 years. Demographics, CSF and nerve conduction studies were compared. A binomial logistic regression and Kaplan-Meier analyses were carried out to estimate good prognosis (Hugues ≤2) at 3-month follow-up. RESULTS: From 1

Body fat, cardiovascular risk factors and brain structure in school-age children.

BACKGROUND: In adults, cardiovascular risk factors are known to be associated with brain health. We hypothesized that these associations are already present at school-age. We examined the associations of adverse body fat measures and cardiovascular risk factors with brain structure, including volumetric measures and white matter microstructure, in 10-year-old children. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis in a population-based prospective cohort study in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Analyses were based on 3098 children aged 10 years with neuroimaging data and at least one measureme

Abdominal Pain in Children Develops With Age and Increases With Psychosocial Factors.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Functional gastrointestinal disorders are highly prevalent, cause significant suffering, and are costly to society. Pain is a central feature of 2 of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders: irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia. Although these disorders have been well studied in adults, their etiology is poorly understood. We sought to identify early life factors associated with the development of abdominal pain in children (age, 2-12 y). METHODS: We collected data from the All Babies in Southeast Sweden study of 1781 children, born from October 1

Humanin Nanoparticles for Reducing Pathological Factors Characteristic of Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Humanin is a novel neuronal peptide that has displayed potential in the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease through the suppression of inflammatory IL-6 cytokine receptors. Such receptors are found throughout the body, including the eye, suggesting its other potential applications. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the developing world. There is no cure for this disease, and current treatments have several negative side effects associated with them, making finding other treatment options desirable. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the potential appl

Mass media and risk factors for cancer: the under-representation of age.

BACKGROUND: Increasing age is a risk factor for developing cancer. Yet, older people commonly underestimate this risk, are less likely to be aware of the early symptoms, and are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage cancer. Mass media are a key influence on the public's understanding health issues, including cancer risk. This study investigates how news media have represented age and other risk factors in the most common cancers over time. METHODS: Eight hundred articles about the four most common cancers (breast, prostate, lung and colorectal) published within eight UK national new

Food consumption patterns and associated factors among Vietnamese women of reproductive age.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Adequate nutrient intakes among women of reproductive age (WRA) are important determinants of maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes. However, data on dietary intake for WRA in Vietnam are lacking. This paper aimed to examine the adequacy and determinants of energy and macronutrient intakes among WRA enrolled in a study of preconceptual micronutrient supplementation (PRECONCEPT) being conducted in 20 rural communes in Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam. METHODS: Dietary intakes were determined for 4983 WRA who participated in the baseline survey using a previously

Age-related pelvic floor modifications and prolapse risk factors in postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: Genital prolapse is frequent in postmenopausal women; it describes the loss of support to the pelvic organs, resulting in a herniation of these into the vaginal channel. This problem affects 50% of parous women, and at least 50% of all women develop a mild form of genital prolapse after pregnancy. METHODS: An extensive literature review from 1990 to 2008 was performed on prolapse etiology and its risk factors; analyzing the data, we reviewed the genetic and biological aspects, age-related prolapse, biological tissue modifications, surgical problems, pelvic musculature modifications

Factors influencing age at diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia in European children.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a hereditary disorder of mucociliary clearance causing chronic upper and lower airways disease. We determined the number of patients with diagnosed PCD across Europe, described age at diagnosis and determined risk factors for late diagnosis. Centres treating children with PCD in Europe answered questionnaires and provided anonymous patient lists. In total, 223 centres from 26 countries reported 1,009 patients aged < 20 yrs. Reported cases per million children (for 5-14 yr olds) were highest in Cyprus (111), Switzerland (47) and Denmark (46). Overall, 57% wer

Risk factors for weight faltering in infancy according to age at onset.

The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for failure to thrive (FTT) or weight faltering according to age of onset. The study is part of a Danish longitudinal population study of early risk mechanisms in child psychiatric disorders, The Copenhagen Child Cohort, which consists of a birth cohort of 6090 children born during the year 2000 and followed prospectively from birth. Weight faltering/FTT was defined as slow conditional weight gain, and divided into subtypes according to age of onset in the first year of life: birth to 2 weeks, 2 weeks to 4 months, and 4-8 months. Regardless of
