Smart Home Technology Integration in Home Modification Programs Serving Older Adults: Focus Group Study With Program Grantees.

BACKGROUND: As people age over the coming decades, demand for in-home support and other interventions, such as home modifications, to help older adults age in place successfully, is also expected to rise. Smart home technologies have the potential to enhance aging in place by complementing traditional home modifications; however, adoption within federally funded home modification programs remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study explored grantees' perspectives on the Older Adults Home Modification Program (OAHMP) to understand current practices, perceived benefits, barriers, and strategies for

A preliminary study on the barriers and facilitators to improving the health, safety, and well-being of aging heavy vehicle drivers.

INTRODUCTION: Managers from road freight transportation organizations were interviewed on barriers and facilitators to implementation of occupational health, safety, and well-being interventions for aging heavy vehicle drivers. As aging drivers are more likely to be seriously injured or die in a work-related incident than younger drivers, it is important to recognize strengths and weaknesses throughout the system to identify intervention that addresses their specific needs. METHOD: A Systems Theoretic Accident Model and Processes (STAMP) control structure was constructed to chart the controll

Social capital and successful aging: the role of senior housing.

Social capital is defined as the resources available to individuals and groups through social connections and social relations with others. Access to social capital enables older citizens to maintain productive, independent, and fulfilling lives. As the U.S. population ages, accompanied by a rise in the prevalence of seniors living alone, the availability of social capital within communities will become an important ingredient of successful aging. Recent evidence suggests that many traditional forms of social capital in communities-as represented by civic engagement in local associations and b

Melatonin as a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant therapy in the testis: a focus on infertility and aging†.

Melatonin is a pineal hormone that regulates testicular activity (i.e., steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis) through two complementary mechanisms, indirect effects exerted via the hypothalamic-adenohypophyseal axis and direct actions that take place on the different cell populations of the male gonad. The effects of increased age on the testis and the general mechanisms involved in testicular pathology leading to infertility are still only poorly understood. However, there is growing evidence that link testicular aging and idiopathic male infertility to local inflammatory and oxidative stress

Presbyopia and the aging eye: Existing refractive approaches and their potential impact on dry eye signs and symptoms.

Every part of the human body is subject to aging, including the eye. An increased prevalence of dry eye disease with age is widely acknowledged. Aging threatens ocular surface homeostasis, altering the normal functioning of the lacrimal functional unit and potentially leading to signs and symptoms of dry eye. Additional age-related processes take place within the crystalline lens, leading to presbyopia and cataractogenesis. Correction strategies for presbyopia and cataracts may directly or indirectly challenge the ocular surface. Contact lenses disturb the normal structure of the tear film and

Compounds that extend longevity are protective in neurodegenerative diseases and provide a novel treatment strategy for these devastating disorders.

While aging is the greatest risk factor for the development of neurodegenerative disease, the role of aging in these diseases is poorly understood. In the inherited forms of these diseases, the disease-causing mutation is present from birth but symptoms appear decades later. This indicates that these mutations are well tolerated in younger individuals but not in older adults. Based on this observation, we hypothesized that changes taking place during normal aging make the cells in the brain (and elsewhere) susceptible to the disease-causing mutations. If so, then delaying some of these age-rel

Aging boosts antiviral CD8+T cell memory through improved engagement of diversified recall response determinants.

The determinants of protective CD8+ memory T cell (CD8+TM) immunity remain incompletely defined and may in fact constitute an evolving agency as aging CD8+TM progressively acquire enhanced rather than impaired recall capacities. Here, we show that old as compared to young antiviral CD8+TM more effectively harness disparate molecular processes (cytokine signaling, trafficking, effector functions, and co-stimulation/inhibition) that in concert confer greater secondary reactivity. The relative reliance on these pathways is contingent on the nature of the secondary challenge (greater for chronic t

Informal Caregiver-Observed Fall Risk Indicators and Caregiver Responses to Prevent Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older People: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Informal caregivers are uniquely positioned to recognize subtle changes that precede falls because of their continuous presence in older people's everyday environments. However, caregiver-observed indicators of escalating fall risk have not been systematically synthesized. This systematic review synthesizes the evidence on informal caregiver-observed fall risk indicators and caregiver responses to prevent falls among community-dwelling older people. METHODS: A targeted synthesis of peer-reviewed literature was undertaken using six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, We

Dual-Stress aging of UV-CIPP composites: Microbial and mechanical degradation mechanisms in corrosive environments.

Ultraviolet cured-in-place pipe (UV-CIPP) has emerged as a prevalent trenchless rehabilitation method, applicable for repairing municipal drainage pipes eroded by sulfuric acid derived from sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) activity, as well as marine outfall pipes degraded by hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria such as Alcanivorax. To assess UV-CIPP material durability, microbial and bending stress aging tests were conducted in simulated sulfuric acid and seawater environments, and the aging mechanisms and microplastics release were analyzed through comprehensive testing. Results indicated that micr

Community Exergaming and Maintenance-Related Outcomes in Older Adults: Multi-Wave Observational Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Community exergaming may help older adults remain physically active by combining movement, enjoyment, and social interaction, but less is known about whether observed changes persist after supervised delivery ends in real-world community settings. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated immediate and maintenance-related outcomes of the International Singapore Intergenerational National Games, a community-delivered exergaming program for older adults in Singapore. We examined positive mental health, intrinsic motivation, habit strength, physical activity, and exploratory implementation det

Associations between walking difficulty, walking activity, and depression among community-dwelling older adults.

PURPOSE: This study explores how walking difficulty and activity relate to depression in older adults using data from the MOBILIZE Boston Study. METHODS: We analyzed data from 765 community-dwelling older adults from the study's baseline assessment. Depression was measured using the 20-item Hopkins Revision of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Walking difficulty and activity were self-reported based on the ability to walk, climb steps, and weekly walking distance. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the associations between difficulty walking, walking act

Neurodevelopmental Versus Neurodegenerative Model of Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder: Comparison with Physiological Brain Development and Aging.

Available data support a contribution of both neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative factors in the etiology of schizophrenia (SCH) and bipolar disorder (BD). Of note, one of the most important issue of the current psychiatric research is to identify the specific factors that contribute to impaired brain development and neurodegeneration in SCH and BD, and especially how these factors alter normal brain development and physiological aging process. Our hypothesis is that only specific damages, taking place in precise brain development stages, are associated with future SCH /BD onset and that

Osteoimmune senescence in aging bone: from inflammaging dogma to cell-type-specific therapeutic windows.

Aging-related bone diseases are often interpreted through hormonal decline, defective remodeling, and chronic low-grade inflammation, yet these accounts do not fully capture the cellular, spatial, and temporal heterogeneity of skeletal aging. Bone is an immune-active organ sustained by coordinated signaling among skeletal, hematopoietic, immune, adipose, vascular, and neural compartments. Cellular senescence perturbs this network through stable cell-cycle arrest, metabolic remodeling, and a heterogeneous senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Whereas recent osteoimmunology syntheses

Gut Microbiota and Brain Aging: Identifying Keystone Biomarkers for Cognitive Health.

The fact that the population is getting older has greatly increased the occurrence of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases, underlining the importance of having reliable biomarkers that can measure biological aging before irreversible neurological damage takes place. New evidence shows that brain aging is not just the result of changes within neurons themselves but is also greatly affected by the gut microbiota via immune, metabolic, endocrine, and neurovascular signaling. This review brings together the existing knowledge about biomarkers of biological aging-such as telomere short

New and safe approach: percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy for the older patient with gastric cancer with dysphagia.

The Japanese have become the longest-lived population in the world. Accordingly, older patients with gastric cancer with dysphasia caused by aging or cerebrovascular insufficiency also increase. Nutritional support is especially important to reduce postoperative morbidity and mortality. On the other hand, it is still a difficult technique to place a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) for patients with gastrectomy. We developed a new and safe method of PEG placement for high-risk older patients with previous subtotal gastrectomy.

Astrocytes require insulin-like growth factor I to protect neurons against oxidative injury.

Oxidative stress is a proposed mechanism in brain aging, making the study of its regulatory processes an important aspect of current neurobiological research. In this regard, the role of the aging regulator insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in brain responses to oxidative stress remains elusive as both beneficial and detrimental actions have been ascribed to this growth factor. Because astrocytes protect neurons against oxidative injury, we explored whether IGF-I participates in astrocyte neuroprotection and found that blockade of the IGF-I receptor in astrocytes abrogated their rescuing ef

Spatio-temporal patterns of neurodegenerative disease hospitalizations in mainland Portugal.

BackgroundNeurodegenerative diseases are an increasing concern for the aging population worldwide. In Portugal, as in many other developed countries, the population is aging rapidly. Understanding temporal and spatial patterns is of utmost relevance to help manage the burden these diseases place on the healthcare system.MethodsIn this retrospective study, we analyzed over 500,000 hospitalizations discharged between 2000 and 2016. We used the empirical Bayes method to compute the smoothed age-standardized hospitalization rates for each neurodegenerative disease, for all hospitalizations per yea
