Adverse health effects of particulate air pollution: modification by air conditioning.

BACKGROUND: The short-term effects of particulate matter (PM) on mortality and morbidity differ by geographic location and season. Several hypotheses have been proposed for this variation, including different exposures with air conditioning (AC) versus open windows. METHODS: Bayesian hierarchical modeling was used to explore whether AC prevalence modified day-to-day associations between PM10 and mortality, and between PM2.5 and cardiovascular or respiratory hospitalizations, for those 65 years and older. We considered yearly, summer-only, and winter-only effect estimates and 2 types of AC (ce

Physiological impacts of atmospheric pollution: Effects of environmental air pollution on exercise.

In this review, we discuss some of the recent advances in our understanding of the physiology of the air pollution and exercise. The key areas covered include the effect of exercise intensity, the effects of pre-exposure to air pollution, acclimation to air pollution, and the utility of masks during exercise. Although higher intensity exercise leads to an increase in the inhaled dose of pollutants for a given distance traveled, the acute effects of (diesel exhaust) air pollution do not appear to be more pronounced. Second, exposure to air pollution outside of exercise bouts seems to have an ef

[Effects of air pollution on cardiovascular health].

Ambient air pollution is a leading modifiable environmental determinant of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. Long-term and short-term exposure to fine particulate matter and traffic-related pollutants is consistently associated with an increased risk of ischemic heart disease, stroke, heart failure, arrhythmia and cardiovascular death. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that inhaled pollutants induce pulmonary and systemic oxidative stress, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, autonomic imbalance and prothrombotic changes, providing biological plausibility for these associations

Air Pollution and Global Pediatric Pneumococcal Disease.

The global burden of mortality from lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) disproportionately impacts children under 5 years of age in low- and middle-income countries. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading pathogenic cause of LRTI morbidity and mortality worldwide. While the global scale-up of childhood pneumococcal vaccination has lowered mortality, air pollution remains a top risk factor for death from LRTI. Climate change will likely alter patterns of exposure to ambient dust, ambient biomass smoke, and household use of higher-polluting fuels. It is therefore important for pediatric in

Air pollution and thyroid function - narrative review.

Air pollution is recognised as one of the primary environmental health hazards. The gas molecules including NO2, CO, SO2, O3, particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5), and volatile organic compounds are being identified as particularly harmful. Despite this, a significant portion of the global population resides in areas with unsatisfactory air quality. Research suggests that air pollutants may act as endocrine disruptors, potentially interfering with thyroid function and contributing thyroid cancer development through oxidative stress, inflammation, and hormonal dysregulation. This paper reviews curr

Migraine and air pollution: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically synthesize evidence from a broad range of studies on the association between air pollution and migraine. BACKGROUND: Air pollution is a ubiquitous exposure that may trigger migraine attacks. There has been no systematic review of this possible association. METHODS: We searched for empirical studies assessing outdoor air pollution and any quantified migraine outcomes. We included short- and long-term studies with quantified air pollution exposures. We excluded studies of indoor air pollution, perfume, or tobacco smoke. We assessed the risk of bias with the World H

Air Pollution: Another Threat to HDL Function.

Epidemiological studies have consistently demonstrated a positive association between exposure to air pollutants and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, with the strongest evidence for particles with a diameter < 2.5 μm (PM2.5). Therefore, air pollution has been included among the modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular outcomes as cardiovascular mortality, acute coronary syndrome, stroke, heart failure, and arrhythmias. Interestingly, the adverse effects of air pollution are more pronounced at higher levels of exposure but were also shown in countries with low levels of air pollution,

Exposure to air pollution and renal function.

Air pollution contributes to the premature death of approximately 428,000 citizens of Europe every year. The adverse effects of air pollution can be observed in respiratory, circulatory systems but also in renal function. We decide to investigate the hypothesis indicating that we can observe not only long- but also short-term impact of air pollution on kidney function. We used linear, log-linear, and logistic regression models to assess the association between renal function and NO2, SO2, and PMs. Results are reported as beta (β) coefficients and odds ratios (OR) for an increase in interquarti

Air Pollution and Human Sperm Sex Ratio.

The present study was designed to address the hypothesis that exposure to specific air pollutants may impact human sperm Y:X chromosome ratio. The study population consisted of 195 men who were attending an infertility clinic for diagnostic purposes and who had normal semen concentration of 15-300 mln/ml (WHO, 2010). Participants represented a subset of men in a multicenter parent study conducted in Poland to evaluate environmental factors and male fertility. Participants were interviewed and provided a semen sample. The Y:X ratio was assessed by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Air q

Air pollution and Breast Cancer: A Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among US women. Air pollution is a pervasive mixture of chemicals containing carcinogenic compounds and chemicals with endocrine disrupting properties. In the present review, we examine the epidemiologic evidence regarding the association between air pollution measures and breast cancer risk. RECENT FINDINGS: We identified seventeen studies evaluating the risk of breast cancer associated with air pollution. A higher risk of breast cancer has been associated with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) levels, both o

Physical activity, air pollution and the brain.

This review introduces an emerging research field that is focused on studying the effect of exposure to air pollution during exercise on cognition, with specific attention to the impact on concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and inflammatory markers. It has been repeatedly demonstrated that regular physical activity enhances cognition, and evidence suggests that BDNF, a neurotrophin, plays a key role in the mechanism. Today, however, air pollution is an environmental problem worldwide and the high traffic density, especially in urban environments and cities, is a major c

Ambient air pollution: a cause of COPD?

The role of ambient air pollution in the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is considered to be uncertain. We review the evidence in the light of recent studies. Eight morbidity and six mortality studies were identified. These were heterogeneous in design, characterisation of exposure to air pollution and methods of outcome definition. Six morbidity studies with objectively defined COPD (forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity ratio) were cross-sectional analyses. One longitudinal study defined incidence of COPD as the first hospitalisation due to COPD. H

Health impact of air pollution to children.

Health impact of air pollution to children was studied over the last twenty years in heavily polluted parts of the Czech Republic during. The research program (Teplice Program) analyzed these effects in the polluted district Teplice (North Bohemia) and control district Prachatice (Southern Bohemia). Study of pregnancy outcomes for newborns delivered between 1994 and 1998 demonstrated that increase in intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) was associated with PM10 and c-PAHs exposure (carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in the first month of gestation. Morbidity was followed in the c

Outdoor air pollution and asthma in children.

BACKGROUND: Asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways, is associated with reversible airway obstruction and hyperresponsiveness to triggers; clinical symptoms include wheezing, episodic cough, shortness of breath, and increased mucous production. Ambient or outdoor environmental exposure to ozone, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides has been well documented to exacerbate asthma. Children appear to be most vulnerable to the harmful effects of ambient air pollutants. As their lungs are not completely developed, children may experience greater exposure to environme

Drug consumption and air pollution: an overview.

PURPOSE: Acute respiratory symptoms are among the health effects of air pollution exposure. Studies over the past decades have linked respiratory drug use (consumption or sales) with changes in air pollution conditions. METHODS: Twenty-one studies were analyzed to discuss whether increased levels of air pollution are associated with the use of medications for respiratory diseases. RESULTS: Epidemiological studies agree that variation in the drug use is related to air pollution exposure. In panel studies, although asthmatics are more sensitive to air pollution effects, the increase in drug us

Traffic-generated air pollution and myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Although long-term air pollution exposure has been linked to cardiovascular mortality, data on incidence and nonfatal coronary disease are limited and inconclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between long-term residential exposure to air pollution from traffic and the risk of nonfatal and fatal myocardial infarction. METHODS: The records of all individuals aged 15 to 79 with a first event of myocardial infarction in Stockholm County during 1985 to 1996 were retrieved from a registry. Population controls were randomly selected from the study base strat

[Allergic respiratory diseases and outdoor air pollution].

INTRODUCTION: After having increased for some time, the prevalence of allergic diseases may have reached a plateau. During this increase, considerable concomitant changes in air pollution have occurred. Photo-oxidant air pollution, related to traffic, has become preponderant. The implication of air pollution in the epidemic of allergies is still debated. BACKGROUND: Experimental studies have suggested that the effect of air pollutants, including particulates and ozone, on the worsening and even the induction of allergies is biologically plausible. In addition, epidemiological studies have sho

Air pollution and sudden infant death syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) affects approximately 1 in 1000 live births and is the most common cause of infant death after the perinatal period. OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of air pollution on the incidence of SIDS. METHODS: Time-series analyses were performed to compare the daily mortality rates for SIDS and the daily air pollution concentrations in each of 12 Canadian cities during the period of 1984-1999. Serial autocorrelation was controlled for by city, and then the city-specific estimates were pooled. Increased daily rates of SIDS were associated with incr
