Effect of Reducing Ambient Traffic-Related Air Pollution on Blood Pressure: A Randomized Crossover Trial.

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) may contribute to increased prevalence of hypertension and elevated blood pressure (BP) for residents of near-highway neighborhoods. Relatively few studies have investigated the effects of reducing TRAP exposure on short-term changes in BP. We assessed whether reducing indoor TRAP concentrations by using stand-alone high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filters and limiting infiltration through doors and windows effectively prevented acute (ie, over a span of hours) increases in BP. Using a 3-period crossover design, 77 participants were

Effective Fungal Spore Inactivation with an Environmentally Friendly Approach Based on Atmospheric Pressure Air Plasma.

Fungal contamination of surfaces is a global burden, posing a major environmental and public health challenge. A wide variety of antifungal chemical agents are available; however, the side effects of the use of these disinfectants often result in the generation of toxic residues raising major environmental concerns. Herein, atmospheric pressure air plasma generated by a surface barrier discharge (SBD) is presented as an innovative green chemical method for fungal inactivation, with the potential to become an effective replacement for conventional chemical disinfection agents, such as Virkon. Elimination of diazinon insecticide from cucumber surface by atmospheric pressure air-dielectric barrier discharge plasma.

The food industry is in a constant search for new technologies to improve the commercial sterilization process of agricultural commodities. Plasma treatment may offer a novel and efficient method for pesticide removal from agricultural product surfaces. To study the proposed technique of plasma food treatment, the degradation behavior of diazinon insecticide by air-dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was investigated. The authors studied the effect of different plasma powers and treatment times on pesticide concentration in liquid form and coated on the surface of cucumbers, where the di

Adding a custom made pressure release valve during air enema for intussusception: A new technique.

BACKGROUND: Non-surgical reduction remains the first line treatment of choice for intussusception. The major complication of air enema reduction is bowel perforation. The authors developed a custom made pressure release valve to be added to portable insufflation devices, delivering air at pressures accepted as safe for effective reduction of intussusception in children under fluoroscopic guidance. The aim of this study was to develop a custom made pressure release valve that is suitable for the insufflation devices used for air enema reduction of intussusception and to put this valve into regu

[The repercussions of variations in ambient air pressure on pulmonary airway dystrophy. Applications to scuba diving with mask, commercial air travel and stays in high-altitude settings].

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary airway dystrophy (PAD) is a rare disease that may be either innate or acquired. Very few publications have been dedicated to the repercussions of the air pressure variations that may be encountered during an airplane journey in a pressurized cabin, an aerial tramway ascent or a stay in a high-altitude setting. Variations may also occur during deep-sea diving with modification of absolute air pressure. STATE OF KNOWLEDGE: The published observations show that all PAD cases have been associated with accidents during exposure or with variations in ambient air pressure. The

Acute FeNO and Blood Pressure Responses to Air Pollution Exposure in Young Adults during Physical Activity.

During physical exercise, the absorbed dose of air pollutants increases. Acute effects of exposure to air pollutants during exercise in healthy young adults remain poorly documented. The aim of this study was to assess the acute responses in fractionated exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and blood pressure to air pollution exposure during exercise in young adults with different physical activity levels (low or high). In this study, 76 healthy university students participating in physical activity classes (low level of physical activity) and attending sports training (high level of physical activity)

Acute Effects on Blood Pressure Following Controlled Exposure to Cookstove Air Pollution in the STOVES Study.

Background Exposure to air pollution from solid fuel used in residential cookstoves is considered a leading environmental risk factor for disease globally, but evidence for this relationship is largely extrapolated from literature on smoking, secondhand smoke, and ambient fine particulate matter ( PM 2.5). Methods and Results We conducted a controlled human-exposure study (STOVES [the Subclinical Tests on Volunteers Exposed to Smoke] Study) to investigate acute responses in blood pressure following exposure to air pollution emissions from cookstove technologies. Forty-eight healthy adults rece

Ambulatory venous pressure, air plethysmography, and the role of calf venous pump in chronic venous disease.

BACKGROUND: Ambulatory venous pressure (AMVP) records pressure dynamics with calf exercise. Air plethysmography (APG) measures related volume detail. APG has been suggested as a noninvasive surrogate for AMVP. We examine the correlations between APG and AMVP parameters and the role of "calf pump failure" in chronic venous disease (CVD). METHODS: A total of 8456 limbs in 4610 patients investigated for CVD during a 20-year period were analyzed. APG and AMVP data were available in 4599 limbs for calculation of Pearson correlation coefficient; 1347 of these limbs had significant iliac vein stenos

A novel cold atmospheric pressure air plasma jet for peri-implantitis treatment: An in vitro study.

Peri-implantitis is difficult to treat in clinical settings; this is not only because it is a site-specific infectious disease but also because it impedes osseointegration. In this study, a novel cold atmospheric pressure air plasma jet (CAPAJ) was applied to study the treatment of peri-implantitis in vitro. CAPAJ treated the samples for 2, 4 and 6 min, respectively. To evaluate the titanium surface characteristics, the surface elemental composition (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy [XPS]), roughness and hydrophilicity were evaluated in each group. Concurrently, the sterilization and osseointe

High pressure air jet in the endoscopic preparation room: risk of noise exposure on occupational health.

After high-level disinfection of gastrointestinal endoscopes, they are hung to dry in order to prevent residual water droplets impact on patient health. To allow for quick drying and clinical reuse, some endoscopic units use a high pressure air jet (HPAJ) to remove the water droplets on the endoscopes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the excessive noise exposure with the use of HPAJ in endoscopic preparation room and to investigate the risk to occupational health. Noise assessment was taken during 7 automatic endoscopic reprocessors (AERs) and combined with/without HPAJ use over an 8

Computer simulations of efficacy of air-cell-based cushions in protecting against reoccurrence of pressure ulcers.

For individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI) who depend on a wheelchair for mobility, sitting-acquired pressure ulcers (PUs) are a common and life-endangering complication. In the short time following an SCI, pathoanatomical and pathophysiological changes that affect the weight-bearing tissues of the buttocks may increase the risk for PUs, exposing this already-at-risk population to the additional potential risk caused by soft tissue scarring. In this work, we evaluated the biomechanical efficacies of an air-cell-based (ACB) cushion for individuals with SCI who have previously experienced P

The Ability of Military Critical Care Air Transport Members to Visually Estimate Percent Systolic Pressure Variation.

INTRODUCTION: Inappropriate fluid management during patient transport may lead to casualty morbidity. Percent systolic pressure variation (%SPV) is one of several technologies that perform a dynamic assessment of fluid responsiveness (FT-DYN). Trained anesthesia providers can visually estimate and use %SPV to limit the incidence of erroneous volume management decisions to 1-4%. However, the accuracy of visually estimated %SPV by other specialties is unknown. The aim of this article is to determine the accuracy of estimated %SPV and the incidence of erroneous volume management decisions for Cri

Association between annual exposure to air pollution and systolic blood pressure among adolescents in Montréal, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: In adults, chronic exposure to air pollution is associated with elevated blood pressure, but few studies have examined this relationship in youth. We investigated the association between annual ambient concentrations of air pollutants (fine particulate matter [PM2.5] and nitrogen dioxide [NO2]) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) among adolescents in Montréal, Canada. METHODS: Participants were students aged 15 to 17 years who provided SBP and residential postal code data in 2004/05 through their enrolment in the Nicotine Dependence in Teens study.
