Transnationalism, parenting, and child disciplinary practices of African immigrants in Alberta, Canada.

Child discipline remains a topic of public health interest across the globe. Despite this enduring interest, very little is known about the child disciplinary practices of African immigrants in Canada. This paper explores the disciplinary practices of African immigrant parents in Alberta, a Canadian province with a recent surge in the population of African immigrants. Employing a critical ethnographic methodology, informed by transnational theory, we collected data through in-depth qualitative interviews with a purposive sample of African community leaders (n = 14), African immigrant parents (

The economic impact of prenatal varicella immunity among pregnant women in Alberta.

In light of the changing epidemiology of varicella, we sought to examine varicella antibody levels in the prenatal population in the Canadian province of Alberta. All prenatal varicella screening tests performed between August 1, 2002 and February 2, 2014 (454,592) were included in this study. Test results, demographics and vaccination status were examined to identify varicella seroprevalence and correlates for being seronegative. An overall seroprevalence for varicella of 95.8% was found across all pregnancy screenings. Significant independent correlates of seronegativity included younger age

Diagnosis of urinary tract infections in the hospitalized older adult population in Alberta.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infections reported in older adults, across all settings. Although a diagnosis of a UTI requires specific clinical and microbiological criteria, many older adults are diagnosed with a UTI without meeting the diagnostic criteria, resulting in unnecessary antibiotic treatment and their potential side effects, and a failure to find the true cause of their presentation to hospital. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of UTI diagnoses amongst hospitalized older adults based on clinical and microbiologi

The benefits of lessons learned: The COVID-19 experience in the Canadian province of Alberta.

The mantra from emergency management professionals is that lessons learned when enacted are beneficial; when they are not, it is a lesson observed. The COVID-19 pandemic has required healthcare organisations to be agile and responsive. This paper describes how Alberta Health Services leveraged the lessons learned from previous incidents in order to provide a flexible response to a rapidly evolving situation.
