The association between temperature and alcohol- and substance-related disorder hospital visits in New York State.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence exists on how temperature increases are associated with hospital visits from alcohol- and substance-related disorders, despite plausible behavioral and physiological pathways. METHODS: In the present study, we implemented a case-crossover design, which controls for seasonal patterns, long-term trends, and non- or slowly-varying confounders, with distributed lag non-linear temperature terms (0-6 days) to estimate associations between daily ZIP Code-level temperature and alcohol- and substance-related disorder hospital visit rates in New York State during 1995-2014.

Central sensitization in alcohol use disorder: correlates of pain, addiction and health-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Central sensitization is an important mechanism underlying many chronic pain conditions. Chronic pain and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are highly comorbid. Despite great scientific interest in brain mechanisms linking chronic pain and AUD, progress has been impeded by difficulty assessing central sensitization in AUD. OBJECTIVE: The present study is the first to employ a validated surrogate measure to describe central sensitization in a clinical sample with AUD. METHODS: Participants with AUD (n = 99) were recruited from an academic addiction treatment center. A well-established su

Influence of dopamine-related genes on craving, impulsivity, and aggressiveness in Korean males with alcohol use disorder.

Dopamine is a major neuromodulator that is acutely involved in various cognitive processes, reward-motivated behaviors, and impulsivity. Abnormality in dopaminergic neurotransmission is implicated in the pathophysiology of alcohol use disorder (AUD). The present study examined the genetic influence of dopamine system on problematic drinking, impulsivity, and aggressiveness in a Korean male population with AUD. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs4532 in DRD1, rs2283265 in DRD2, rs6280 in DRD3, rs1800497 in ANKK1, and rs4680 in COMT) and a variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs) in

Sex-related differences in auditory processing in adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: A magnetoencephalographic study.

Children exposed to substantial amounts of alcohol in utero display a broad range of morphological and behavioral outcomes, which are collectively referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Common to all children on the spectrum are cognitive and behavioral problems that reflect central nervous system dysfunction. Little is known, however, about the potential effects of variables such as sex on alcohol-induced brain damage. The goal of the current research was to utilize magnetoencephalography (MEG) to examine the effect of sex on brain dynamics in adolescents and young adults wi

Sex differences in blackout: evidence of a relationship between disorders of arousal during sleep and alcohol-related blackout in females.

RATIONALE: Disorders of arousal (DoA) constitute a class of related, heritable conditions that includes sleepwalking, sleep terrors, and confusional arousals. These disorders are defined by behavioral features which are shared with a separate phenomenon, alcohol-related blackout (ARB). Both ARB and DoA are characterized by full or partial amnesia and disinhibited behavior with maintenance of nearly normal motor function. While these disorders share phenomenology, to our knowledge no previous studies have examined the relationship between them. This is an important gap in the literature as the

Evidence for an alcohol-related "harm paradox" in individuals with internalizing disorders: Test and replication in two independent community samples.

BACKGROUND: Internalizing (anxiety and mood) disorders (INTD) commonly co-occur (are "comorbid") with alcohol use disorder (AUD). The literature suggests that excessive alcohol use aimed at coping with INTD symptoms is, at best, a partial explanation for the high comorbidity rates observed. We hypothesized that individuals with INTD experience greater susceptibility to developing AUD symptoms due to the partially shared neurobiological dysfunctions underlying both conditions. We probe this hypothesis by testing the prediction that, after accounting for the volume of alcohol intake, individuals

Training needs of healthcare providers related to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention core competencies for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are birth defects directly linked to consumption of alcohol during pregnancy and hence completely preventable. Many health and allied health professionals are in prime positions for primary prevention of FASDs through work with women of childbearing age and secondary prevention through work with affected individuals whose lives can be greatly improved via tailored intervention. OBJECTIVES: To develop educational guidelines for FASD prevention. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 26 individuals representing eight health or allied health

The experience of physiological and psychosocial alcohol-related harms across adolescence and its association with alcohol use disorder in early adulthood: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Different forms of alcohol-related harm (e.g., hangovers, fighting) may confer differential risk of clinically relevant alcohol problems. We examine: (i) patterns of transition in experiencing alcohol-related harms across adolescence; (ii) whether factors in early adolescence predict transition patterns; and (iii) whether transition patterns predict later alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms. METHODS: We used a longitudinal Australian cohort (n = 1828) to model latent class transition patterns of alcohol-related harms across three timepoints (Mage  = 13.9, 16.8, 18.8 years). Regres
