Cholestasis is a common complication of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in infants. A contributing factor to the hepatic dysfunction may be a contaminant of the TPN solution, such as aluminum, that accumulates in liver and may act as a hepatotoxin. To study the hepatic effects of aluminum, growing piglets were given daily intravenous injections of aluminum, 1.5 mg/kg, for 50 days; pair-fed controls were given heparinized saline. Bone histomorphometry was performed in 26 hemodialyzed patients to study the relation between the dynamic parameters of bone formation and aluminum deposition. A case is presented where secondary mandibular reconstruction with an aluminum oxide ceramic prosthesis was performed for a patient who had had an earlier hemimandibulectomy and primary bone graft for management of an ameloblastoma. Various factors that were considered in the construction of the prosthesis and problems encountered during operation are discussed. Although the prosthesis was found to be quite useful for the restoration of facial contour, the results of a long-term follow-up are needed to obtain a final evaluation of the reconstruction.

The performance of particulate aluminum oxide (Al2O3) as a bone graft material was evaluated by comparison to two other graft materials, autogenous bone and particulate hydroxylapatite (HA). Holes were drilled through the medial cortex of both the distal femora and proximal tibiae in three dogs. Three haemodialyzed chronic renal failure patients with histologically proven osteomalacia due to aluminium toxicity were treated with repeated injections of desferrioxamine, a potent chelator of aluminium.
