The effects of pesticides, pH, and predatory stress on amphibians under mesocosm conditions.

Pesticides are applied throughout the world often with unintended consequences on ecological communities. In some regions, pesticides are associated with declining amphibians, but we have a poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Pesticides break down more slowly under low pH conditions and become more lethal to amphibians when combined with predatory stress, but these phenomena have not been tested outside of the laboratory. I examined how pH, predatory stress, and a single application of an insecticide (carbaryl) affected the survival and growth of larval bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana

6-hydroxydopamine lesions in anuran amphibians: a new model system for Parkinson's disease?

We investigated the effects of dopamine depletion on acoustically guided behavior of anurans by conducting phonotaxis experiments with female gray treefrogs (Hyla versicolor) before and 90 min after bilateral injections of 3, 6, or 12 microg 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the telencephalic ventricles. In experiments with one loudspeaker playing back a standard artificial mating call, we analyzed the effects of 6-OHDA on phonotactic response time. In choice tests we measured the degree of distraction from the standard call (20 pulses/s) by three different variants with altered pulse-rate (30/s

Emerging pathogen of wild amphibians in frogs (Rana catesbeiana) farmed for international trade.

Chytridiomycosis is an emerging disease responsible for a series of global declines and extinctions of amphibians. We report the causative agent, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, in North American bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) farmed for the international restaurant trade. Our findings suggest that international trade may play a key role in the global dissemination of this and other emerging infectious diseases in wildlife.

Multiple Cryptosporidium serpentis oocyst isolates from captive snakes are not transmissible to amphibians.

Viable Cryptosporidium serpentis oocysts originating from 6 captive snakes were gastrically delivered to 12 Cryptosporidium-free African clawed frogs and 9 tadpoles and 3 recently metamorphosed adults of Cryptosporidium-free wood frogs. On days 7 and 14 postinoculation, no life-cycle stage of Cryptosporidium was observed in any of the histological sections of stomach, jejunum, ileum, cloaca, and cecum. However, viable inoculum-derived C. serpentis oocysts were recovered from the water in which the amphibians were kept. Amphibians may disseminate C. serpentis oocysts in the natural habitat.

Developmental responses of amphibians to solar and artificial UVB sources: a comparative study.

Many amphibian species, in widely scattered locations, currently show population declines and/or reductions in range, but other amphibian species show no such declines. There is no known single cause for these declines. Differential sensitivity to UVB radiation among species might be one contributing factor. We have focused on amphibian eggs, potentially the most UVB-sensitive stage, and compared their resistance to UVB components of sunlight with their levels of photolyase, typically the most important enzyme for repair of the major UV photoproducts in DNA, cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers. Retinotopic analysis of fiber pathways is amphibians. I. The adult newt Cynops pyrrhogaster.

The possibility that pathways of retinal fibers within the optic tract and the tectum of the adult newt are retinotopic was examined by selective labeling of the retinal fibers with horseradish peroxidase. Within the optic tract fibers from the ventral, temporal and dorsal retinal quadrants were ordered from the dorsal to ventral edges of th optic tract. The nasal retinal fibers exhibited two different pathways. The fibers from the dorsonasal retina ran along the ventral edge of the optic tract, while the fibers from the ventronasal retina ran along the dorsal edge of the optic tract. Segregat

Evolution of an amphibian-specific family of epidermal differentiation-associated genes.

The surface layer of the skin and hard skin appendages of land-dwelling vertebrates depend on epithelial differentiation-associated proteins, which increase the mechanical resilience of cells upon cornification. These proteins, exemplified by keratin-associated proteins (KRTAPs) in mammals and epidermal differentiation complex (EDC) proteins in all tetrapods, have low amino acid sequence complexity and interact with other proteins to form stable supramolecular structures. No KRTAPs and only few EDC proteins exist in amphibians, suggesting an alternative mechanism of epithelial cornification. H

Spinal Cord Supports in Caecilian Vertebrae and Their Significance for Amphibian Systematics.

Spinal cord supports (medially projecting bony protuberances within the neural canal) are found in several lineages of fossil and extant salamanders and have been interpreted as a synapomorphy of Caudata. Previous studies that have reported the absence of spinal cord supports in caecilian amphibians were based on an incomplete survey. Here, we re-examine the condition in caecilians using micro-CT scans and histological sections of vertebrae. We find that spinal cord supports are widespread among caecilians, occurring at least in the atlas of most examined species. In caecilians, the supports a

Influence of Amphibian Metamorphosis on the Biokinetics and Biodistribution of Radionuclides Cesium and Strontium.

Amphibians currently face a global decline due to numerous stressors, including contaminated ecosystems. Radionuclides, while less prevalent than other anthropogenic contaminants, can pose a threat to aquatic environments due to their long physical half-lives and tendency to accumulate in organisms. This study investigated the accumulation, depuration, and biodistribution of 134Cs and 85Sr in amphibians through metamorphosis. Limnodynastes peronii tadpoles were exposed to dissolved 134Cs and 85Sr for 6 days and then depurated in clean water for up to 12 days. Whole-body Cs and Sr burdens were

The Role of Amphibian AMPs Against Oxidative Stress and Related Diseases.

Amphibians use their skin as an effective defense mechanism against predators and microorganisms. Specialized glands produce antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that possess antioxidant properties, effectively reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. These peptides are promising candidates for treating diseases associated with oxidative stress (OS) and redox imbalance, including neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), as well as age-related conditions, like cardiovascular disease

Field experiments on the effects of fire on parasite transmission to amphibian hosts.

The emergence of infectious diseases is often associated with changes to host-pathogen ecology, and wildfires are known to profoundly modify the ecology of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. Nevertheless, few studies have employed manipulative experiments to quantify the effects of fire on infections across parasite species. In a mark-recapture study, prescribed burns did not significantly affect the densities of Cuban tree frog (CTF; Osteopilus septentrionalis) definitive hosts. However, prescribed burn field experiments and a before-after-control-burn mesocosm study revealed that fire de

Amphibian helminths in Europe revisited: taxonomy, threats, and ecological insights.

Amphibians face numerous threats, including climate change, pollution, and emerging infectious diseases. While chytrid fungi have dominated recent research on amphibian pathogens, helminth parasites, despite their diversity and potential to impact amphibian health, remain underexplored, particularly in Europe. The goal of this review is to highlight the current state of knowledge on amphibian helminths in Europe, including current knowledge on species diversity, parasites' life history, and the availability of molecular data. We outline major challenges in amphibian helminthology and propose s

Strobilurin fungicide increases the susceptibility of amphibian larvae to trematode infections.

The global rise in fungal pathogens has driven the increased usage of fungicides, yet our understanding of their ecotoxicity remains largely limited to acute toxicity. While such data is critical for projecting the risk of fungicide exposure to individual species, the contamination of natural systems with fungicides also has the potential to alter species interactions within communities including host-parasite relationships. We examined the effects of the fungicide pyraclostrobin on the susceptibility of larval American bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) to trematode (echinostome) infections using a

Amphibian mast cells serve as barriers to chytrid fungus infections.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastases (BM) are a major complication in metastatic breast cancer, especially in HER2-positive and triple-negative subtypes. Despite advances in systemic therapy, BM remains associated with a poor prognosis and often requires radiotherapy. This study evaluates the outcomes of brain irradiation across subtypes and proposes a prognostic scoring system to guide treatment. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from 348 breast cancer patients with BM to develop a prognostic scoring system for radiotherapy decisions. The data included molecular subtypes, number of bra

Ranavirus infection does not reduce heat tolerance in a larval amphibian.

Extreme heat events and emerging infectious diseases negatively impact wildlife populations, but the interacting effects of infection and host heat tolerance remain understudied. The few studies covering this subject have demonstrated that pathogens lower the heat tolerance of their hosts, which places infected hosts at a greater risk experiencing lethal heat stress. Here, we studied how ranavirus infection influenced heat tolerance in larval wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus). In line with similar studies, we predicted the elevated costs of ranavirus infection would lower heat tolerance, meas

The Broad-Spectrum Antiviral Potential of the Amphibian Peptide AR-23.

Viral infections represent a serious threat to the world population and are becoming more frequent. The search and identification of broad-spectrum antiviral molecules is necessary to ensure new therapeutic options, since there is a limited availability of effective antiviral drugs able to eradicate viral infections, and consequently due to the increase of strains that are resistant to the most used drugs. Recently, several studies on antimicrobial peptides identified them as promising antiviral agents. In detail, amphibian skin secretions serve as a rich source of natural antimicrobial peptid

Albinism in the largest extant amphibian: A metabolic, endocrine, or immune problem?

BACKGROUND: Pigment regression is an intriguing phenomenon that can be caused by disorders in melanin metabolism or endocrine regulation, or by autoimmune disorders. Albino animals serve as excellent models for the study of the genetic determination of morphology, particularly the evolution of and molecular mechanisms underlying chromatophore-related diseases in animals and humans. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The artificial culture of Andrias davidianus, the largest extant amphibian, is flourishing in China due to the great ecological and economic value of this animal. Role of Antimicrobial Peptides in Amphibian Defense Against Trematode Infection.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) contribute to the immune defenses of many vertebrates, including amphibians. As larvae, amphibians are often exposed to the infectious stages of trematode parasites, many of which must penetrate the host's skin, potentially interacting with host AMPs. We tested the effects of the natural AMPs repertoires on both the survival of trematode infectious stages as well as their ability to infect larval amphibians. All five trematode species exhibited decreased survival of cercariae in response to higher concentrations of adult bullfrog AMPs, but no effect when exposed t

Diphtheroid colitis in a Boa constrictor infected with amphibian Entamoeba sp.

A female boa (Boa constrictor) from a zoological collection was submitted for necropsy after sudden death. Prominent pathological findings included a diphtheroid colitis, endoparasitism, focal pneumonia and inclusion bodies typical for inclusion body disease (IBD). In the colon entamoebae were identified, which differed in size and distribution from Entamoeba invadens. Gene sequence analysis of the 18S ribosomal RNA revealed 100% similarity with an Entamoeba species from the African bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus), probably Entamoeba ranarum. The snake was possibly immunosuppressed, and the

Detubulation abolishes membrane potential stabilization in amphibian skeletal muscle.

A recently reported stabilization ('splinting') of the resting membrane potential ( Em) observed in amphibian skeletal muscle fibres despite extracellular hyperosmotic challenge has been attributed to high resting ratios of membrane Cl- to K+ permeability ( P Cl/ P K) combined with elevations of their intracellular Cl- concentrations, [Cl-]i, above electrochemical equilibrium by diuretic-sensitive cation-Cl-, Na-Cl (NCC) and/or Na-K-2Cl (NKCC), co-transporter activity. The present experiments localized this co-transporter activity by investigating the effects of established detubulation proced
