Background: Traumatic auricular amputation represents a rare but complex reconstructive challenge, and numerous surgical techniques have been developed over the past century to optimize functional and aesthetic outcomes. This historical review examines current auricular reattachment and replantation strategies by comparing established surgical techniques for traumatic auricular amputation. Methods: A historical literature search was conducted in PubMed to identify relevant case reports on auricular reconstruction following amputation, dating from 1898 to the present. Eligible studies were revi

The physiological changes and alterations in gait following amputation may increase the risk of fractures. However, there is insufficient research on fracture risk in amputees. Therefore, this study intended to analyze whether the risk of new fractures increases after traumatic amputations. This population-based, retrospective cohort study used data from the Korean National Health Insurance System database. The study included 19,586 participants who had undergone an amputation and 76,645 matched controls. The incidence of any fracture and site-specific fractures (vertebral, hip, and others) ac

There is very little literature on the overall management of adolescent traumatic amputation, specifically of the lower extremity. We present a case involving an adolescent patient involved in an industrial farm tractor rollover with substantial crush and degloving injuries requiring bilateral lower extremity amputations. The patient was initially assessed and acutely managed in the field before arriving at an adult level 1 trauma center having two right lower extremity tourniquets already applied and a pelvic binder in place. During his hospitalization, he was revised to bilateral above-knee

Liposomal bupivacaine has been explored for indications in regional anesthesia, but little has been reported about its use in pediatric patients. In March 2021, the FDA approved an indication for liposomal bupivacaine as an infiltrated local anesthetic in children older than the age of six. Despite this recently expanded indication, the literature lacks reports of use for peripheral nerve blockade in children. We describe a case where liposomal bupivacaine was used for femoral and sciatic nerve blocks in a 5-year-old child with traumatic amputation of his lower leg. Pain control was excellent,

BACKGROUND: Recent literature indicates equivalent costs of walking can be achieved after a transtibial amputation when the individual is young, active, and/or has extensive access to rehabilitative care. It is unknown if a similar cohort with transfemoral amputation can also achieve lower metabolic costs of walking than previously reported.
OBJECTIVE: Compare metabolic cost in individuals with a transfemoral amputation to controls and to the literature across a range of walking speeds.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
METHODS: A total of 14 individuals with a unilateral transfemoral amputati

BACKGROUND: Amputation following trauma is emerging as a major health burden on the medical services and on the families and the society as well. Loss of limbs causes inability to support self and the family that further leads to various psychiatric disorders in many patients. Therefore, the present study is planned to explore psychiatric comorbidity in patients with amputation following trauma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-nine amputees were recruited by consecutive sampling within 6-month period from amputation clinic of a tertiary care hospital. All participants were interviewed on a semi-

Although only a small portion of all lower-extremity amputations in the United States are of traumatic origin, almost half of all living amputees have sustained traumatic amputations. This particular epidemiology is explained by the younger age, and thus longer life expectancy, of traumatic amputees. In this group especially, restoration and lifelong maintenance of ambulation and mobility is essential. The authors present the case of a bilateral traumatic lower-leg amputee whose management included a Pirogoff amputation. Although this amputation technique is not widely used, the authors believ

INTRODUCTION: The accepted mechanism of blast-mediated traumatic amputation (TA) is blast wave induced fracture followed by limb avulsion from the blast wind, generating a transosseous amputation. Blast-mediated through-joint TAs were considered extremely rare with published prevalence <2%. Previous studies have also suggested that TA is frequently associated with fatal primary blast lung injury (PBLI). However, recent evidence suggests that the mechanism of TA and the link with fatal primary blast exposure merit review.
METHODS: A trauma registry (UK Joint Theatre Trauma Registry) and postmo

One case of traumatic forequarter amputation associated acute lung injury (ALI) was presented. A discussion reviewing the treatment guidelines for this devastating injury, and pointing out the importance of supporting the lung and preventing the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was included.

The advent of microsurgery has allowed the replantation of traumatically amputated limbs. Replantation of a severed limb to the contralateral stump in bilateral traumatic amputation, however, is rarer, and criticisms include a prolonged hospital stay and complications. A 54-year-old man was caught in a paper-pulping machine and suffered bilateral lower limb amputation rendering his left lower leg unsalvageable. The right lower leg, after debridement however, was suitable for replantation to the left stump. This replantation was performed successfully. The patient was rehabilitated with a contr

INTRODUCTION: Joint reconstruction following trauma at the proximal interphalangeal or metacarpophalangeal levels remain a difficult problem in hand surgery. Function of the injured finger depends on the mobility and stability at these joints. In fingers amputated at these levels with joint destruction, the hand surgeon can perform either an arthrodesis or a replacement arthroplasty (either as an emergency or as a secondary procedure). Arthrodesis will give a stable pain-free joint, but at the cost of sacrificing mobility and even cosmesis.

Severe accidents in children may cause extreme destruction of the lower extremities. In some cases, there is no possibility to preserve the limbs. Initially, a weight-bearing stump cannot be achieved after amputation due to unstable local and soft tissue conditions. This critical situation is often complicated by one of the leading problems in the limb-deficient child - the development of osseous overgrowth. Bizarre overgrowth of the stump may lead to skin perforation, pressure ulcers, and difficulties with the prosthesis. Since 1993, we have been able to follow five pediatric and adolescent p

INTRODUCTION: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is typically used to provide mechanical perfusion and gas exchange to critically ill patients with cardiopulmonary failure. We present a case of a traumatic high transradial amputation in which the amputated limb was placed on ECMO to allow for limb perfusion during bony fixation and preparations and coordination of orthopedic and vascular soft tissue reconstructions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a descriptive single case report which underwent managment at a level 1 trauma center. Instutional review board (IRB) approval was obtained.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic quadruple amputations limit daily living activities; however, the current literature regarding rehabilitation treatment for multi-limb amputations is scant. The patient showed adaptation to prosthetic fittings, acquiring a level of functional independence that enabled the patient to lead a nearly independent life.
METHODS: The patient's therapeutic intervention was divided into a pre-prosthetic phase, which consisted of functional physical adaptation to the amputation and preparation for the prostheses, and a prosthetic phase, in which different myoelectric and micropr

PURPOSE: The recommended surgical treatment after thumb amputation is replantation. In the United States, fewer than 40% of thumb amputation injuries are replanted, and little is known about factors associated with the probability of replantation. We aimed to investigate recent trends and examine patient and hospital characteristics that are associated with increased probability of attempted thumb replantation. We hypothesized that higher-volume teaching hospitals and level-I trauma centers attempted more replantations.
METHODS: We used 2007-2012 data from the National Trauma Data Bank. Our f

CASE: We present the case of a twenty-one-year-old woman with a traumatic left leg amputation, substantial proximal skin degloving, and an ipsilateral femoral fracture treated with revision amputation distal to the fracture site and retrograde femoral nailing through the amputation site.
CONCLUSION: A short retrograde femoral nail is a surgical option to fix a femoral shaft fracture proximal to a traumatic amputation in order to preserve limb length for effective prosthetic fit and ambulation.

The technique of retrograde intramedullary fixation of fractures through open traumatic amputations has not been previously described. We performed a retrospective case series at a tertiary-care military hospital setting. Ten patients met inclusion criteria. All were male, and all were injured through improvised explosive device. Outcome measures included the incidence of fracture nonunion, osteomyelitis or acute infection, heterotopic ossification (HO), as well as successful prosthesis fitting and ambulation. Average time to fixation after injury and amputation closure was 11.7 and 12.2 days,
