Prosthetic abandonment is highly prevalent among upper extremity amputees (UEA), partly due to lack of engaging and motivating training to use their devices. Augmented reality (AR) systems can be used for rehabilitation, and are advantageous because they offer stimulating, goal-oriented experiences for participants to immerse themselves in while performing repetitive tasks to improve function. Thus, in this study, the effects of a novel AR prosthetic training game, and the transfer of skills to a functional rehabilitation performance assessment involving tasks of daily living were investigated

Patients with a lower limb amputation suffer from an impaired balance control and thereby are at a higher risk to fall. To cope with this deficit, they adapt their neuromuscular system by modifying biomechanical and neuromuscular structures. In this study, we investigated changes in corticomuscular coherence between the motor cortex and muscles of the trunk and the intact lower leg. We recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) data from 10 unilateral transfemoral amputees and 10 age-matched able-bodied controls during quiet upright stance with eyes open, eyes closed and duri

When exploring innovations in amputation medicine and the technical aids required for care, the thought of prosthetic socket technologies might not immediately come to mind. Yet, these attachment systems, commonly referred to as quivers or similar in everyday language, that connect prostheses to the user's body, are an essential component of prosthetic care for individuals with leg amputations. Based on the principles of modern amputation surgery, where surgeons aim to create the best possible fit between prosthesis and residual limb stump, this approach requires prosthetic technology to provi

BACKGROUND: Telerehabilitation provides a viable alternative for individuals facing barriers to in-person rehabilitation because of transportation issues and physical limitations. It enables remote monitoring and guidance, allowing patients to continue rehabilitation at home.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a telerehabilitation program in improving physical and psychological outcomes for lower limb amputees and to evaluate adherence to a home-based exercise program delivered via video.
STUDY DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial.
METHODS: Sixty participants with l

BACKGROUND: The most common reason for lower-extremity amputations remains the management of complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) and/or peripheral vascular disease. Traditional socket prostheses remain the rehabilitation standard, although transcutaneous osseointegration for amputees (TOFA) is proving a viable alternative. Limited studies of TOFA for vascular amputees have been published, but no study has focused on TOFA for patients with DM, neglecting this important patient population. The primary aim of the present study exploring this potential care option was to report the frequencies

Research addressing lower limb amputee gait and prosthetic design often focuses on men, despite female lower limb amputees having different risk factors and lower success with their prosthetics overall. It is widely agreed that sex differences exist in able-bodied gait, but research analyzing sex differences in amputee gait is rare. This study compared male and female transtibial amputee gait to ascertain potential sex differences. Forty-five transtibial amputees were asked to walk at their self-selected speed, and spatiotemporal gait data were obtained. Both the mean and variability metric of

UNLABELLED: Press-fit transfemoral osseointegration is the technique of inserting an intramedullary metal implant into the residual femur of an amputee; the implant is passed transcutaneously to attach to a standard prosthesis that includes a knee, tibia, ankle, and foot. This allows the prosthesis to be skeletally anchored, eliminating socket-related problems such as tissue compression that can provoke neurogenic pain, skin abrasion, and fitting problems resulting from residual limb size fluctuation1. Amputees with osseointegrated prostheses typically wear their prosthesis more and experience

Above-knee amputees suffer the lack of sensory information, even while using most advanced prostheses. Restoring intraneural sensory feedback results in functional and cognitive benefits. It is unknown how this artificial feedback, restored through a neuro-robotic leg, influences users' sensorimotor strategies and its implications for future wearable robotics. To unveil these mechanisms, we measured gait markers of a sensorized neuroprosthesis in two leg amputees during motor tasks of different difficulty. Novel sensorimotor strategies were intuitively promoted, allowing for a higher walking s

By 2020, over 2.2 million people in the United States will be living with an amputated lower limb. The functional impact of amputations presents significant challenges in daily living activities. While significant work has been done to develop smart prosthetics, for the long-term development of effective and robust myoelectric control systems for transtibial amputees, there is still much that needs to be understood regarding how extrinsic muscles of the lower limb are utilized post-amputation. In this study, we examined muscle activity between the intact and residual limbs of three transtibial

BACKGROUND: Major lower limb amputation is occasionally required in the management of end-stage pathology where other treatment options have failed. The primary aim of this study was to determine the 30-day and 1-year mortality rates of patients undergoing nontraumatic major lower limb amputation. Secondary aims were to investigate risk factors for poor outcomes, incidence of previous minor amputation, and the rate of subsequent major amputation.
METHODS: All nontraumatic, major lower limb amputations performed at Toowoomba Hospital during an 18-year period were retrospectively reviewed. Mort

BACKGROUND: The sudden jolt of becoming an amputee brings with it the realization of loss of independence and self-built psychological and physical security. Advances in the field of prosthesis give the individual hope for better future, but the presence of psychological morbidity is a hurdle to be crossed in the road to satisfactory rehabilitation.
AIM: This study aimed to assess the psychiatric morbidity in amputees and the response to treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred newly amputated soldiers were assessed by means of clinical interview, General Health Questionnaire, Impact of

Understanding the characteristics of ground reaction forces (GRFs) on both limbs during sprinting in unilateral amputees wearing running-specific prostheses would provide important information that could be utilized in the evaluation of athletic performance and development of training methods in this population. The purpose of this study was to compare GRFs between intact and prosthetic limbs during sprinting in unilateral transfemoral amputees wearing running-specific prostheses. Nine sprinters with unilateral transfemoral amputation wearing the same type of prosthesis performed maximal sprin

Objectives: This study was performed to elucidate the characteristics of amputees in our hospital. We also evaluated whether the causes and characteristics of the amputations influenced the patients' prosthetic walking ability. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively examined 47 amputees in our hospital from December 1996 to April 2016 with respect to the causes and levels of amputation. Of 28 lower limb amputees from April 2008 to April 2016, 22 received prostheses and were divided into 2 groups according to the cause of the amputation, as follows: the internal cause group (e.g., vascular d

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic neuroma occurs in 13% to 32% of amputees, causing pain and limiting or preventing the use of prosthetic devices. Targeted nerve implantation (TNI) is a procedure that seeks to prevent or treat neuroma-related pain in amputees by implanting the proximal amputated nerve stump onto a surgically denervated portion of a nearby muscle at a secondary motor point so that regenerating axons might arborize into the intramuscular motor nerve branches rather than form a neuroma. However, the efficacy of this approach has not been demonstrated.

The purpose of the study was to assess the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy on prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with unilateral lower limb amputation. Narang's scale, the Locomotor Capabilities Index and the two-minute walk test were used to assess functional abilities of amputees on the admission and on discharge from hospital. We also kept records of some clinical parameters whose improvement enables better mobility of patients: thigh and lower leg girth, strength of amputation stump, existence of amputation stump contracture, existence of some other complications on amputatio
