A Pilot Study on the Association of Mitochondrial Oxygen Metabolism and Gas Exchange During Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing: Is There a Mitochondrial Threshold?

Background: Mitochondria are the key players in aerobic energy generation via oxidative phosphorylation. Consequently, mitochondrial function has implications on physical performance in health and disease ranging from high performance sports to critical illness. The protoporphyrin IX-triplet state lifetime technique (PpIX-TSLT) allows in vivo measurements of mitochondrial oxygen tension (mitoPO2). Hitherto, few data exist on the relation of mitochondrial oxygen metabolism and ergospirometry-derived variables during physical performance. This study investigates the association of mitochondrial

Anaerobic speed reserve and acute responses to a short-format high-intensity interval session in runners.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess relationships of acute responses to short-format high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with the anaerobic speed reserve (ASR) of adolescent runners. DESIGN: Pre-post intervention design. METHODS: Eighteen highly-trained youth runners (15.83 ± 0.86 years) underwent maximal sprinting speed (MSS) and maximal aerobic speed (MAS) assessments to determine ASR (MSS minus MAS) and a standardized HIIT protocol (2 × (20 × 15 s/15 s @110 % MAS)) was administered. Pre/post-HIIT assessments included biochemical (i.e., creatine kinase (CK)), neuromuscular (counterm

Wingate anaerobic test as a potential predictor of 500-m time in short track speed skating.

Short-Track Speed Skating (STSS) is an Olympic discipline in which anaerobic performance plays a central role. An established assessment tool for anaerobic performance in STSS athletes is the Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT). The aim of this study was to investigate whether WAnT could be used as a predictor of sport-specific performance in the STSS 500-m races. Data from 72 German national STSS athletes (33 female, 39 male) were analysed retrospectively. The statistical analyses included descriptive procedures as well as linear mixed-model analyses. The results showed significant correlations bet

The Conconi test: methodology after 12 years of application.

The protocol for the determination of the speed/heart rate relationship during incremental exercise previously described (so-called Conconi test) has been refined and in part modified during 12 years of application. The new protocol calls for time-based increments in exercise intensity that are uniform up to submaximal speeds and progressively greater in the final phase. As in the original article (18), the speed/heart rate relationship is linear at low to moderate speed and curvilinear from submaximal to maximal speeds. A method is presented for the mathematical definition of this relationshi

Hypoxic response is inversely related to degree of exercise hyperventilation.

The Dejours hyperoxic test has been used to quantitate peripheral chemoreceptor contribution to the hyperpnea of exercise. The strength of this drive, measured by the percent reduction in ventilation, varies among individuals and is lacking in chemodenervated humans, who also fail to manifest a hyperventilatory response in heavy exercise. We reasoned that greater hyperventilation in exercise above the anaerobic threshold ought to be associated with greater hypoxic (carotid body) drive. The present study tested this hypothesis. In 17 naive subjects, carotid body O2 chemosensitivity was tested r

Effect of High-Intensity Interval Training and Moderate-Intensity Continuous Training in People With Poststroke Gait Dysfunction: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: The exercise strategy that yields the greatest improvement in both cardiorespiratory fitness (V̇O2peak$$ \dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{O}}_{2\mathrm{peak}} $$) and walking capacity poststroke has not been determined. This study aimed to determine whether conventional moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) or high-intensity interval training (HIIT) have different effects on V̇O2peak$$ \dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{O}}_{2\mathrm{peak}} $$ and 6-minute walk distance (6MWD). METHODS AND RESULTS: In this 24-week superiority trial, people with poststroke gait dysfunction were randomized to

Anaerobic exercise components during the force-velocity test in sickle cell trait.

Incremental exercise tests have shown no difference in exercise capacity (EC), maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), and ventilatory threshold (VT) in subjects with sickle cell trait (SCT) when compared to controls with normal hemoglobin (Hb). Nevertheless, during long and strenuous exercise testing, subjects with SCT exhibit comparable EC but lower oxygen uptake (VO2). Consequently, specific metabolic adaptations in subjects with SCT have been suggested during endurance exercise, consisting of a slight "handicap" in oxygen consumption and compensation by the hypothetical development of a higher ana

Maximal glycolytic flux modulates metabolic thresholds independent of maximal oxygen uptake.

PURPOSE: This study examined how maximal glycolytic flux, indexed by the peak lactate accumulation rate (vLapeak) from a 15-s sprint, relates to lactate- and gas-exchange derived endurance thresholds at a given V̇O2max in trained cyclists. METHODS: Fifty cyclists (30 men, 20 women) completed two laboratory visits: a ramp test with verification to determine V̇O2max, and on a separate day, a 15-s all-out sprint with repeated post-exercise capillary blood sampling to determine peak lactate accumulation (ΔLa) and derived vLapeak, followed by a 3-min step-increment test with lactate and gas-exchan

Meta-analysis of reference values of cardiorespiratory fitness and impact of interventions in patients with cirrhosis.

INTRODUCTION: Cirrhosis is associated with significant risk of comorbidity and early mortality. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing has the advantage of allowing cardiac, pulmonary and muscle function assessment and could have a better prognosis value than the usual assessment of cardiorespiratory function often evaluated at rest in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS: We reviewed electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar) for relevant literature running up to April 2024. RESULTS: This review gathers the data from 3029 patients with cirrhosis from 62 studies. Patients with cirrh

Distance Capacity Above the Critical Speed and Speed Reserves: are they Related?

The aim of this study was to correlate the anaerobic speed reserve and the maximal speed reserve with the distance capacity above the critical speed (D'), derived from four different mathematical models, in a group of endurance runners. Twenty-two runners performed an incremental treadmill test to exhaustion, an all-out 40-m sprint and three time trials (800, 1,500 and 3,000 m) on an outdoor running track to determine an anaerobic speed reserve, a maximal speed reserve and D'. D' was determined using linear distance-time (D'linear d-t), linear velocity-time (D'linear 1/t), 2-parameter hyperbol

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing: does measured peak O2 reflect a valid peak O2 in patients with hemiparetic stroke?

BACKGROUND: The relationships between cardiopulmonary exercise testing(CPET) variables at submaximal and peak efforts across severities of mobility and hemiparesis in patients with stroke are crucial for interpretation but unexplored. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that patients with more severe neurological deficits are likely to exhibit a lower peak respiratory exchange ratio(pRER). Moreover, individuals with lower pRER experience greater limitations at peak performance compared to those with higher pRER, while their submaximal performance remains relatively unaffected. METHODS: This retrospe

Does anaerobic speed reserve influence post-activation performance enhancement in endurance runners?

We investigated the influence of anaerobic speed reserve (ASR) on post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE). Twenty-two endurance runners and triathletes were evaluated for maximum sprinting speed (MSS) and countermovement jump (CMJ) before (non-fatigued) and after (fatigued) an incremental running test. They were allocated in LASR (low-ASR) and HASR (high-ASR) groups for comparisons between conditions. HASR showed greater CMJ and MSS (both p ≤ 0.005) performances, with enhanced CMJ in fatigued condition (p ≤ 0.008). Significant correlations were found between ASR, CMJ, and MSS in both co

Durability in recreational runners: effects of 90-min low-intensity exercise on the running speed at the lactate threshold.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have suggested that the capability to resist deterioration of physiological characteristics could be an independent factor contributing to endurance performance. This study aimed at investigating whether prolonged low-intensity exercise induces shifts in the lactate threshold, and whether fatigue-induced changes differ between the sexes. METHODS: A total of 31 (15 females) recreational runners performed an incremental treadmill test and a 90-min low-intensity exercise (LIT90) on two separate occasions. The LIT90 was performed at 90% of the first lactate threshold speed

Maximal fat oxidation, but not aerobic capacity, is affected by oral contraceptive use in young healthy women.

PURPOSE: Synthetic ovarian hormones contained in oral contraceptives (OC) may alter the aerobic capacity and lipid metabolism in oral contraceptive users (OC+) compared with non-users (OC-). The aim of this study was thus to investigate the differences between OC- and OC+ (1) in cardiorespiratory parameters at the anaerobic threshold (AT) and at the maximal aerobic capacity and (2) in the exercise intensity (Lipoxmax) at which lipid oxidation rate is maximal (MLOR). METHODS: Twenty-one healthy untrained women (22.0 ± 0.6 years old) who took OC (OC+; low-dose monophasic OC, n = 11) or not (OC-
