George Macaulay: A short biography and his place in the history of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

George Macaulay (1716-1766) was a Scot admired for his work as an obstetric physician, philanthropist, author, and feminist, but whom history has largely forgotten. In a time rampant with misogyny, Macaulay empathized with women, discouraged sexism within institutions, and contributed to the training of midwives. He spent much of his career working at the British Lying-in Hospital in London. Perhaps most importantly, he worked tirelessly for this hospital, contributed to various medical innovations, and reported several medical cases throughout his career, including that of congenital diaphrag

Cadaveric Case Report of Pelvic and Abdominal Anatomy in an Individual With a Müllerian Duct Anomaly.

Müllerian duct anomalies (MDAs) are a congenital abnormality of the paramesonephric ducts that result in malformation of the uterus, cervix, and/or vagina. Here, the authors present a class I MDA potentially suggesting Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome with two masses incidentally found upon dissection into the uterine cavity. Only a single MRKH syndrome with uterine masses in cadavers has been previously described in the literature. The authors aim to enrich the body of gynecological and reproductive research currently available by increasing understanding of the types of MDAs an

Mechanisms of AV node modulation in AV node reentry tachycardia.

Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia has been recognized for many years as a very common cause of supraventricular tachycardia. First curable by surgery, this tachycardia is now successfully approached by selective radiofrequency current application to the slow pathway of the reentrant circuit. Importantly, these curative treatments brought evidence that the reentrant circuit of this arrhythmia was not confined to the compact atrioventricular (AV) node. These findings stimulate anatomists and basic and clinical electrophysiologists to fundamentally reconsider the atrioventricular junct

Variations in the Origin and Branching Pattern of the Profunda Femoris Artery and Their Clinical Implications.

The profunda femoris artery (PFA) is a branch of the femoral artery, and it gives off medial and lateral circumflex arteries. The PFA and its branches are of utmost use in preventing avascular necrosis of the femoral head, during catheterisation, and in reconstructive surgeries. Due to the immense clinical implications associated with this artery, the study assumes great importance. The aim of the study is to highlight the varied anatomy of the PFA and its branches, along with correlating them with clinical implications. The literature was explored using the databases PubMed, MEDLINE, Wiley On

[Advances in mechanisms of Meckel's cartilage development and degeneration].

Meckel's cartilage (MC) was first delineated in 1820 by the German anatomist Johann Friedrich Meckel the Younger through his examination of human embryos. During early development, MC functions as a supportive structure for the mandible and serves as a template for the subsequent formation of the jaw bones. Ultimately, MC transforms into either skeletal tissue, ligaments, or completely resorbs, integrating with the continuously developing osseous structures. This review elucidates the influence of MC development and degeneration on mandibular morphogenesis, delineating cellular processes and k

The Dual Innervation of the Gluteus Maximus Associated with Other Anatomical Variations of the Gluteal Region.

The gluteus maximus (GM) is a big quadrilateral musculature that lines the rear portion of the pelvis. It is innervated by the inferior gluteal nerve. The sciatic nerve, inferior gluteal nerve, and posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh are branches of the sacral plexus. The superior and inferior gluteal arteries are the chief arterial supply to the gluteal region. In the present case, there was a dual innervation of the GM. The superior gluteal artery and the superior gluteal nerve was piercing the piriformis and the inferior gluteal artery was running between the posterior cutaneous nerve of

[The vallecula: an anatomic reality?].

The vallecula epiglottica is a borderline area between the pharynx and the larynx, though covered by the epiglottis, and a functionally strategic site and breeding ground for epidermoid carcinoma, but it has remained unappreciated by anatomists. The borders of the vallecula within the oropharynx are represented by the anchoring systems of the epiglottic cartilage; the basilingual margin is sometimes inaccurate. We would like to emphasize the topographical relationships in the vallecular region, in particular: --the proximity to the base of the tongue, which is the preferred are of extension of

Challenges in sourcing bodies for anatomy education and research in Ethiopia: Pre and post COVID-19 scenarios.

BACKGROUND: The relevance of anatomical dissection in instructing anatomy to medical, dental, and other health science students is indisputable. Ethiopian anatomists encountered challenges in obtaining human bodies for anatomy education and research, both prior to and following the COVID-19 outbreak. The challenges intensified during the pandemic, significantly affecting anatomy education in Ethiopia. This study seeks to investigate the sources of bodies for anatomy, spanning the periods before and after COVID-19, with a particular focus on identifying the primary challenges associated with so

Metopism and Its Clinical Relevance: A Persistent Suture.

BACKGROUND: Metopic suture is a dense fibrous joint extending from nasion to bregma. Normally, closure of this suture takes place between 1-8 years of age. Failure of this closure beyond 8 years leads to persistent metopic suture. Persistent metopic suture may mimic skull fracture. AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To differentiate metopism from frontal bone fracture. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 54 dry skull of adult humans in were studied. These skulls were observed for the presence (complete or incomplete suture) or absence of metopic suture. RESULT: Metopic suture was found in 3.7% skulls. Both complete and i

A comprehensive review of the "supracondylar process" with translation of Adachi.

The supracondylar process is a nonpathological projection from the distal humerus that in some patients, can result in compression of regional neurovascular structures, for example, median nerve. Since the first description of the supracondylar process in 1818, it has also been a focus of anthropological study because of its possible relevance to human origins and relationships to other species. Although its overall incidence is low, it is more common in races of European descent. It is particularly interesting for anatomists and anthropologists, but knowledge of its anatomical relationships a

A special anatomic preparation for teaching central venous catheterization.

Catheterization of the subclavian and internal jugular veins is a commonly performed procedure for monitoring the hemodynamic, respiratory, and fluid status of patients as well as for delivery of special potent drugs and nutritive solutions. In inexperienced hands, this procedure can carry significant morbidity. A comprehensive central line placement teaching program has been developed at our institution centered upon an anatomy and catheterization skills workshop. A dedicated anatomic specimen has been prepared to emphasize key anatomical concepts about the subclavian and internal jugular vei

A historical perspective on the discovery of the accessory duct of the pancreas, the ampulla 'of Vater' and pancreas divisum.

The discovery of the accessory duct of the pancreas is usually ascribed to Giovanni Domenico Santorini (1681-1737), after whom this structure is named. The papilla duodeni (ampulla 'of Vater', or papilla 'of Santorini') is named after Abraham Vater (1684-1751) or after GD Santorini. Pancreas divisum, a persistence through non-fusion of the embryonic dorsal and ventral pancreas is a relatively common clinical condition, the discovery of which is usually ascribed to Joseph Hyrtl (1810-1894). In this review I report that pancreas divisum, the accessory duct and the papilla duodeni (ampulla 'of Va

[Neural control of saliva secretion. Review of questions on special neurosecretory functions of the facial nerve].

Fifty years ago, anatomists and physiologists still held the opinion that the N. facialis had a purely motor fuction without any sensory or secretory components. With respect to the previously only occasionally mentioned possibility of an additional neurosecretory function of the N. facialis, clinical and experimental, especially neurophysiological research and experiences of the last five decades have however led to results which are being discussed under particular consideration of the neural control of salivary secretion. In this connection, side-functions are discussed that are just appear

Gross and radiographic appearance of porotic hyperostosis and cribra orbitalia in thalassemia affected skulls.

Porotic hyperostosis (PH) is the expansion of the cranial diploë, generating 'hair-on-end' appearance on X-rays. This condition is extremely rare and had a prevalence of 0.08%. It is alternatively known as cribra orbitalia (CO) when the orbital roof is affected. In this study, we describe the gross morphology of two skulls affected by PH and CO. The first skull belonged to a 41-year-old female previously diagnosed with beta thalassemia. The skull was affected by excessive PH and CO. The second skull, belonging to a 35-year-old male diagnosed with unspecified thalassemia, showed PH without CO.

Superficial Ulnar Artery: A Case Report of its Unusual Course.

After arising from the brachial artery in the cubital fossa the ulnar artery usually passes deep into the superficial flexor muscles of the forearm. In the lower two-thirds, it typically follows a sub-fascial course. In the present case, during a routine undergraduate course dissection of a cadaver, it was found that the ulnar artery arose normally as a terminal branch of the brachial artery in the cubital fossa, followed a sub-fascial course by lying superficial to the flexor muscles then completed the superficial palmar arch in hand. This artery gave only minute muscular branches in the fore

Anomalous large unique muscle belly of flexor digitorum superficialis and the absence of palmaris longus in the forearm.

Anomalies of muscles of the upper extremity are frequently encountered and anatomic variations of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle-tendon unit are frequently reported by anatomists and clinicians. FDS anomalies can be in forms of tendon interconnections, substitution, absence or muscle belly variations and most of the times the anomalies of FDS produce few clinical symptoms. We report a rare and unusual case of FDS anomaly with a unique and large muscle belly. The deformity is type V according to the classification of Elliot et al. in which the muscle belly extends to four digit

Sinus node artery originating from the posterior part of the right coronary artery.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to examine the anatomical variations of the sinus node artery (SNA). METHODS: Gross anatomical examination, angiographic evaluation and if necessary dissection were performed in 200 human hearts derived from victims of various accidents. RESULTS: The SNA was a branch of the right coronary artery in 118 [59%] cases, the left circumflex in 78 [39%] cases and both coronary arteries in 4 [2%] cases. In one subject, the SNA was found to arise from the distal part of the right coronary artery. CONCLUSIONS: In our case, the sinus node was perfused by a SNA ari

Cerebral localization in antiquity.

Fragments of neurology can be found in the oldest medical writings in antiquity. Recognizable cerebral localization is seen in Egyptian medical papyri. Most notably, the Edwin Smith papyrus describes hemiplegia after a head injury. Similar echoes can be seen in Homer, the Bible, and the pre-Hippocratic writer Alcmaeon of Croton. While Biblical writers thought that the heart was the seat of the soul, Hippocratic writers located it in the head. Alexandrian anatomists described the nerves, and Galen developed the ventricular theory of cognition whereby mental functions are classified and localize

The method combines the use of DICOM CT scan or cone beam data, anatomical informations and a mathematical tool, the axes of inertia, in order to create a 3D model for cephalometric analysis of the human face. The balance and symmetry of the model are stable enough to define normality for each individual, even when there are differences in ethnic and cultural origins. Imbalance and asymmetry characterize pathologies. Follow up shape and size of models allow growth prediction and modeling. An original statistical study of the 3D model variability using the "g

The Enigmatic temporal pole: a review of findings on social and emotional processing.

The function of the anterior-most portion of the temporal lobes, the temporal pole, is not well understood. Anatomists have long considered it part of an extended limbic system based on its location posterior to the orbital frontal cortex and lateral to the amygdala, along with its tight connectivity to limbic and paralimbic regions. Here we review the literature in both non-human primates and humans to assess the temporal pole's putative role in social and emotional processing. Reviewed findings indicate that it has some role in both social and emotional processes, including face recognition
