Radiological Anatomy of the Pelvis and Pelvic Limb of the Greater Cane Rat (Thryonomys swinderianus).

Greater cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus) are now being captive reared and domesticated in the sub-Saharan Africa because of increase in their demand for biomedical research and traditional medicine and as a source of meat. This research was performed to provide the normal radiological anatomy of the pelvis and pelvic limb in greater cane rats for a reference in biomedical research, in anatomical studies, and in clinical use. Radiological examination of the pelvis and right pelvic limb was done in five greater cane rats. Radiological results were correlated with bones of the pelvis and right

The Olfactory Bulb in Companion Animals-Anatomy, Physiology, and Clinical Importance.

The Olfactory Bulb is a component of the Olfactory System, in which it plays an essential role as an interface between the peripheral components and the cerebral cortex responsible for olfactory interpretation and discrimination. It is in this element that the first selective integration of olfactory stimuli occurs through a complex cell interaction that forwards the received olfactory information to higher cortical centers. Considering its position in the organizational hierarchy of the olfactory system, it is now known that changes in the Olfactory Bulb can lead to olfactory abnormalities. T

Two- and three-dimensional anatomy of paranasal sinuses in Arabian foals.

The 2- and 3-dimensional (3D) anatomy and the morphometric properties of the paranasal sinuses of the foal have received little or no attention in the literature. The aim of this study was to obtain details of the paranasal sinuses using multiplane CT imaging to create 3D models and to determine morphological and morphometric data for the sinuses using the 3D models. The heads of five female foals were used in this study. The heads were scanned using computed tomography (CT) in the rostrocaudal direction. After the heads had been frozen, anatomical sections were obtained in the scan position.

Applicability of a canine prostate simulator (PROSIM-DOG) in clinical veterinary practices.

Simulators help students to perform procedures as many times as needed, in a controlled and non-stressful environment. It is crucial to include transrectal digital palpation in the physical examination of dogs for effective clinical diagnosis of prostate diseases, since this is a commonly found pathology in intact males. Training in prostate palpation may be hindered if students cannot assess and compare different types of prostates, a common situation that can be solved by training devices. A low-cost canine prostate simulator (PROSIM-DOG) was developed and tested by 167 veterinary science st

An illustrated guide to dissection and abdominal anatomy of the yellow mealworm beetle.

An unprecedented increase in the number and the size of yellow mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor) farms in North America and Europe has been driven, among other factors, by the demand for sustainable proteins. Insect farming offers ecologic advantages, including lower land and water use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. As in conventional livestock farming, veterinarians are essential to maintain insect health because disease outbreaks can reduce productivity, compromise animal welfare, and cause monetary loss. Yet, the role of veterinary diagnosticians remains limited in this emerging sec

Ultrasonographic features of abdominal organs and testicles in captive adult crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) from the Brazilian Cerrado: a case series.

Ultrasonography is a widely used diagnostic imaging technique in veterinary medicine and has gaining ground in wild animal medicine. This case series describes the ultrasonographic anatomy of abdominal organs and testicles in eleven adult captive crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) from the Brazilian Cerrado. All animals were considered clinically healthy based on physical examination and laboratory testing, including complete blood count and serum biochemistry. The animals were sedated with meperidine, acepromazine and propofol prior to ultrasonographic examination. The urinary bladder lumen

Sectional Anatomy with Micro-Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Correlation of the Middle and Caudal Abdominal Regions in the Syrian Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

The abdomen is a key region in small animal veterinary practice, with the middle and caudal sections housing various organ systems that are susceptible to dysfunction, necessitating medical intervention or surgery. Sectional imaging techniques like CT and MRI are commonly used in small mammals, but no studies have focused on rodent abdomen. This study aimed to correlate micro-CT and MRI images of the middle and caudal abdominal regions with corresponding anatomical sections in Syrian hamsters (SHs), which are popular pets and experimental models. Ten healthy male SHs were used, and anatomical

[Diseases of the Thymus in domestic mammals: Significance and diagnosis].

In contrast to human medicine, thymic disorders receive little attention as differential diagnoses in veterinary medicine. The aim of this overview is to provide information on the current state of knowledge concerning the topographical anatomy, physiological development, and involution, function, and diseases of the thymus as well as the diagnosis of thymic disorders in various domestic mammals. Therefore, literature on this topic was searched and summarized. The anatomical extent and developmental/involutionary processes differ significantly from species to species. The thymus reaches its ma

Pseudopus apodus Soft Tissue Anatomy Based on Comparison of Classical Dissection and Multi-Detector Computed Tomography.

Anatomy is critical for understanding the physiological and biological adaptations of living creatures. In the case of Pseudopus apodus, an anguimorph lizard belonging to the Order Squamata, it is particularly important considering the scarce previous works on the morphology of its coelomic cavity. It is interesting to consider that, over the years, using non-invasive approaches in reptiles, such as diagnostic imaging methods, is becoming popular for both scientific and clinical purposes. For the present work, we used a total of five Pseudopus apodus individuals (two males and three females);

Shape variations of pelvis in different classes of dogs using geometric morphometry.

The ossa coxae are the bones that connect the hindlimbs to the axial skeleton. The right and left os coxae join at the median plane to form the pelvis. In this study, variations in pelvis shape and the asymmetric structure of the pelvis were investigated across different classes of dogs. To achieve this, computed tomography images of the pelvis were obtained from 35 dogs, and 3D modelling of the pelvis was created. Subsequently, 45 landmarks were identified on these models. As a result of the Principal Component Analysis, the shape variation was observed in the pelvic canal and crista iliaca.

Evaluation of mega-voltage CT images for completed radiotherapy treatments for dogs and cats reveals uncommon but potentially consequential dose deviation in thoracic and abdominal tumors.

As advanced delivery techniques such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) become conventional in veterinary radiotherapy, highly modulated radiation delivery helps to decrease dose to normal tissues. However, IMRT is only effective if patient setup and anatomy are accurately replicated for each treatment. Numerous techniques have been implemented to decrease patient setup error, however tumor shrinkage, variations in the patient's contour and weight loss continue to be hard to control and can result in clinically relevant dose deviation in radiotherapy plans. Adaptive radiotherapy (

Small ruminant urinary obstruction: decision trees for treatment.

Urolithiasis is the most common cause of urinary tract disease in small ruminants and has significant economic and production impacts worldwide. Urolithiasis is multifactorial in origin and generally begins with the formation of cystoliths followed by urethral obstruction. The condition is most common in males. Clinical signs are variable depending on the severity of the obstruction. Uroliths can be calcium, struvite, or silicate based; however, struvite and amorphous magnesium calcium phosphate are the most common urolith types observed in small ruminants. Although urethral process (vermiform

Rhinoceros-related delayed traumatic diaphragmatic rupture.

Animal-related injuries should be analyzed based on the behavior and anatomy of the attacking animal. Rhinoceros-related injuries in humans are extremely rare. Hereby, we report a life-threatening traumatic diaphragmatic hernia in a woman who presented three years after a rhinoceros gored her chest. A 47-year-old lady presented with abdominal pain, bilious vomiting and obstipation of one-day duration. She had recurrent attacks of colicky abdominal pain for a week before that. The patient gave the history of being admitted to the ICU three years before, after being gored by a rhinoceros into he

Exercise Induced Laryngeal Obstruction in Humans and Equines. A Comparative Review.

Dynamic obstructions of the larynx are a set of disorders that occur during exercise in equines and humans. There are a number of similarities in presentation, diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment. Both equines and humans present with exercise intolerance secondary to dyspnea. During laryngoscopy at rest, the larynx appears to function normally. Abnormalities are only revealed during laryngoscopy at exercise, seemingly triggered by increased ventilatory demands, and quickly resolve after cessation of exercise. Lower airway disease (asthma being the most prevalent condition), cardiac diseas

Normal magnetic resonance anatomy of the hind foot of Egyptian buffalo (Bubalus bubalis): A correlative low-field T1- and T2-weighted MRI and sectional anatomy atlas.

Buffaloes represent a major source of milk production, especially in developing countries including Egypt. The buffalo foot is frequently involved in a large proportion of lameness cases. The relatively small size and complexity of its structures often render the radiographic evaluation of the foot challenging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive imaging technique that is regarded as both safe and accurate for assessment of the foot disorders in both man and animals. The purpose of the current investigation was to describe the MRI anatomy of buffalo foot using cadaveric hind feet
