OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of delayed cord clamping at 30 seconds and 1 minute on the incidence of neonatal hematocrit, anemia, maternal and neonatal complications in term cesarean delivered neonates.
METHODS: An opened labelled, randomized controlled trial was undertaken. The 160 healthy term cesarean-born neonates were randomly allocated to either 30 seconds or 1-minute groups of delayed cord clamping (DCC) (groups 1 and 2). Neonatal venous hematocrit (Hct) and microbilirubin (Mb) were measured at 48-72 hours after birth.
RESULTS: One hundred and fifty-nine neonates completed this st

AIM: This study was designed to stress the importance of early diagnosis of fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) in attempt to prevent the subsequent adverse outcome on the fetus and the newborn.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nine newborns were admitted because of neonatal anemia to our neonatal unit from October 1989 through September 1995. The diagnosis of FMH was made by the sigma diagnostic fetal hemoglobin that is the Kleihauer test in our hematologic laboratory. Other causes of neonatal anemia have been ruled out.
RESULTS: Seven out of the nine cases have expressed early signs of fetal distress in te

OBJECTIVES: This report describes the case of an infant with congenital thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
CASE PRESENTATION: An infant who presented after birth with severe neonatal indirect hyperbilirubinemia, thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia. His initial neonatal course was complicated with hypoxemic respiratory failure due to persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, acute kidney injury and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. After surviving the acute neonatal presentation, he presented with stress-induced recurrent hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia. The diagnosis

Newborn infants who have hereditary spherocytosis (HS) can develop anemia and hyperbilirubinemia. Bilirubin-induced neurologic dysfunction is less likely in these neonates if the diagnosis of HS is recognized and appropriate treatment provided. Among neonates listed in the USA Kernicterus Registry, HS was the third most common underlying hemolytic condition after glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency and ABO hemolytic disease. HS is the leading cause of direct antiglobulin test (direct Coombs) negative hemolytic anemia requiring erythrocyte transfusion in the first months of life. We an

BACKGROUND: Iron is a vital micronutrient that performs a crucial role in numerous cellular processes. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of anemia and the iron levels in newborns and their effect on overall health at birth, to link iron levels in newborns with maternal and newborn traits, and to identify predictors of ferritin levels in newborns.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 100 mothers and their neonates, who were delivered either vaginally or via caesarean section, at Assiut University Hospital in Egypt. During the presentation for delivery, information about the mother's

OBJECTIVE: To determine maternal and neonatal outcomes in individuals with iron deficiency receiving antepartum intravenous (IV) iron supplementation, stratified by the degree of anemia.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of iron-deficient pregnant patients who received at least one IV infusion of iron (iron sucrose, low molecular weight iron dextran [LMWID], or ferric carboxymaltose) during their pregnancy from January 1, 2011 through June 16, 2022. Our primary outcomes included both neonatal composite morbidity and maternal composite morbidity in the context of maternal anemia.

We describe the four most common groups of neonatal anemia and their treatments, with particular emphasis on erythropoietin therapy. The hemolytic anemias include the ABO incompatibility (much more frequent, nowadays, than the Rh incompatibility, which has nearly disappeared following the use of anti-D immunoglobulin in postpartum Rh-negative mothers), hereditary spherocytosis and G-6-PD deficiency. Among hypoplastic anemias, that caused by Parvovirus B19 predominates, by far, over Diamond-Blackfan anemia, alpha-thalassemia and the rare sideroblastic anemias. "Hemorrhagic" anemias occur during

OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to assess the efficiency of the peak systolic velocity in the middle cerebral artery (PSV-MCA) to predict neonatal anemia at the end of pregnancies after serial intravenous fetal exchange transfusions (IFET) for red-cell fetomaternal immunization.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study from 01/01/2004 to 31/12/2009 of 25 pregnancies after IFET for red-cell fetomaternal immunization, in Saint Vincent de Paul Hospital, Paris. The study assessed correlation between the last prenatal PSV-MCA measured and hemoglobin concentration at birth and other neonata

BACKGROUND: Exchange transfusion and phototherapy have traditionally been used to treat jaundice and avoid the associated neurological complications. Because of the risks and burdens of exchange transfusion, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) has been suggested as an alternative therapy for alloimmune hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) to reduce the need for exchange transfusion.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect and complications of IVIg in newborn infants with alloimmune HDN on the need for and number of exchange transfusions.
SEARCH METHODS: We performed electronic searches of CENTRAL,

The three major causes of anemia in neonates are blood loss, decreased red blood cell production, and increased degradation of erythrocytes. Establishing the cause of anemia in a neonate born prematurely can be challenging. Clinically, fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) can be difficult to diagnose-the condition often presents only after the manifestation of severe fetal anemia. FMH can be confirmed by determining the fetal hemoglobin F fraction in the mother, which is traditionally performed using the Kleihauer-Betke test (KBT). Herein, we present a case study of a newborn baby boy of Dutch ethnic

BACKGROUND: Twin anemia polycythemia sequence is a chronic form of unbalanced fetofetal transfusion through minuscule placental anastomoses in monochorionic twins, leading to anemia in the donor and polycythemia in the recipient. Owing to the low incidence of twin anemia polycythemia sequence, data on diagnosis, management, and outcome are limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the diagnosis, management, and outcome in a large international cohort of spontaneous twin anemia polycythemia sequence.
STUDY DESIGN: Data from the international twin anemia polycythemia sequence registr

Fetomaternal hemorrhage is referred to as the passage of fetal blood into the maternal circulation. Massive hemorrhage can cause severe fetal anemia, affecting fetal and neonatal outcomes. A neonatal hemoglobin concentration (Hb), which is reportedly a significant prognostic factor, of <5.0 g/dL has been reported to carry a high risk of poor outcomes (death and major morbidity). We present a case of massive fetomaternal hemorrhage with the lowest value of neonatal Hb ever previously reported in a survivor, who subsequently met all the developmental milestones at the corrected age of 18 months.

Anti-E alloimmunization is the third most common cause of neonatal hemolytic disease, typically causing mild to moderate hemolytic anemia. We report an unusual case of severe hydrops fetalis and persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) in a neonate with anti-E alloimmunization. Our case emphasizes the importance of close surveillance for development of severe fetal hemolytic anemia and possible need for antenatal intervention. These neonates may also need vigilant monitoring for PPHN.

Fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) is a known cause of neonatal anemia due to fetal blood loss to the maternal circulation, occurring when the maternal-fetal barrier is disrupted. Several causes must be considered, although in most cases the etiology remains unknown. Intraplacental choriocarcinoma (ICC) is a rare entity and has been related with massive FMH, intrauterine fetal demise, severe neonatal anemia and metastatic choriocarcinoma in both mother and infant. There are 25 cases of histopathologically confirmed ICC complicated with FMH described in the literature. Because FMH occurs unexpectedl

Pearson syndrome (PS) is a rare mitochondrial disorder that usually presents with transfusion-dependent macrocytic anemia, exocrine pancreatic dysfunction, and lactic acidosis. Typical bone marrow (BM) features are vacuolization in hematopoietic progenitors, hypocellularity, and ringed sideroblasts. At the neonatal age, PS may have a variable clinical onset. Moreover, there is little information about BM features at this age and the timing of their presentation. We report a neonatal case of PS that presented with refractory anemia and atypical BM features. We reviewed the BM findings in neonat

Pregnancy after bariatric surgery is known to be associated with a higher risk of small for gestational age infants (SGA) and maternal anemia. 71 patients with a history of bariatric surgery, who had at least one pregnancy ended with a delivery of a single live-born neonate after the bariatric surgery were included in the study. The main endpoints were gestational weight gain (GWG), GWG as % of the maternal weight at the beginning of pregnancy (GWG%), maternal anemia, SGA and large for gestational age infants (LGA), neonatal intensive care unit admission (NICU). GWG% was 23.8% ± 14.1 in the LG
