OBJECTIVE: To compare the usefulness of CT angiography against the gold standard, digital subtraction angiography (DSA), in the characterization of cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM) that present with bleeding.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients with intracranial bleeding due to an AVM who were included in a prospective database in the period comprising January 2007 through December 2012. We reviewed radiologic variables such as the characteristics of the AVM (size, location, presence of deep venous drainage), involvement of eloquent areas, and the presence of

OBJECTIVE: During the last decade, improvements in real-time, high-resolution imaging of surgically exposed cerebral vasculature have been realized with the successful introduction of intraoperative indocyanine green video angiography (ICGVA) and technical advances in intraoperative digital subtraction angiography (DSA). With the availability of 3D intraoperative DSA (3D-iDSA) in hybrid operating rooms, the present study offers a contemporary comparison for rates of accuracy and discordance.
METHODS: In this retrospective study of prospectively collected data, 140 consecutive patients underwe

OBJECTIVE: Computed tomographic angiography (CTA) is a rapid and minimally invasive method of detecting intracranial aneurysms. We wished to determine whether CTA could replace digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in the diagnosis and operative planning of ruptured cerebral aneurysms.
METHODS: In a prospective study, patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage diagnosed by plain computed tomography underwent CTA, DSA, or both. Computed tomographic scans and CTA studies were first reviewed by the treating surgeon, along with a neuroradiologist, and a decision to proceed to DSA or directly to surger

Although carotid bifurcation stenoses are not the only lesions of the extracranial cerebral arteries, magnetic resonance angiographic (MRA) studies to date have concentrated on the carotid bifurcation. We compared digital subtraction angiography of the extracranial portions of the cerebral arteries with MRA using an ordinary body coil, the time-of-flight method, and multiple transverse slabs which covered the arteries down to the aortic arch. Twenty-two patients (15 with arteriosclerotic diseases, 4 with aortitis, and 3 with tumours) had MRA using a 1.5 T magnet system with a three-dimensional

Digital video subtraction angiography (DVSA) and duplex scanning were compared to conventional angiography with regard to their accuracy in quantifying internal carotid artery disease. A classification of 108 carotid arteries available for comparison was made into five groups: normal (14), stenosis to 20% (15), stenosis from 20% to 49% (19), stenosis from 50% to 99% (44), and occlusion (16). The overall agreement corrected for chance (K) for DVSA was 0.738 +/- (SE) 0.049, which was better than for duplex scanning (K = 0.610 +/- 0.055). For hemodynamically significant disease (greater than or e

Background/Objectives: Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is the gold standard in the diagnosis of cerebral vasospasm, frequently observed after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). However, less-invasive methods, such as computed tomography angiography (CTA), may be equally accurate. To further clarify comparability, this study evaluated the reliability of CTA in detecting cerebral vasospasm. Methods: This retrospective study included 51 patients with SAH who underwent both CTA and DSA within 24 h. The smallest diameter of the proximal cerebral arterial segments was measured in both modalities a

INTRODUCTION: Ruptured intracranial aneurysms are responsible for over 90% of cases of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Conventional digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the gold standard for diagnosing the source of SAH. A prospective study is presented wherein SAH patients underwent three dimensional CT angiography (CTA) prior to DSA in order to assess the specificity and sensitivity of this non-invasive modality to detect aneurysms.
METHODS: 179 consecutive patients with spontaneous SAH presented over 36 months, as identified by screening CT and CTA. Patients with negati

BACKGROUND: Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is a fluoroscopy method primarily used for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Deep learning-based DSA (DDSA) is developed to extract DSA-like images directly from fluoroscopic images, which helps in saving dose while improving image quality. It can also be applied where C-arm or patient motion is present and conventional DSA cannot be applied. However, due to the lack of clinical training data and unavoidable artifacts in DSA targets, current DDSA models still cannot satisfactorily display specific structures, nor can they predict

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is an uncommon cerebrovascular disorder characterized by idiopathic progressive stenosis or the occlusion of the intracranial arteries. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is the reference diagnostic imaging modality for MMD. Use of the conventional Suzuki grading remains the gold standard for evaluating the severity of MMD. In this study, we propose a quantitative method using color-coded parametric quantitative DSA (QDSA) to improve prediction of the severity of MMD.
METHODS: Eighteen DSA examinations from 18 patients with MMD and 14 control participants

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pediatric head and neck lesions can be difficult to characterize on clinical grounds alone. We investigated the use of dynamic MR digital subtraction angiography as a noninvasive adjunct for the assessment of the vascularity of these abnormalities.
METHODS: Twelve patients (age range, 2 days to 16 years) with known or suspected vascular abnormalities were studied. Routine MR imaging, time-of-flight MR angiography, and MR digital subtraction angiography were performed in all patients. The dynamic sequence was acquired in two planes at one frame per second by using a thi

100 patients undergoing digital subtraction cerebral angiography were randomized to have contrast delivered by either hand or mechanical injection. We compared the two modes of injection for image quality, the presence of vertebral reflux, possible complications and radiation exposure to the radiologist. There was no statistical difference between the two modes of contrast delivery for image quality and vertebral reflux. Only one definite temporary neurological complication was recorded. However, radiation exposure to the radiologist's hand and body were reduced by up to 70% by using a mechani

To evaluate the place of intravenous digital subtraction angiography (IV-DSA) in the investigation of patients with carotid territory ischemia, we have compared the IV-DSA and conventional angiographic (CA) findings in 40 patients in a prospective study. Arterial disease was assessed by grading stenosis from zero (normal artery) to six (complete occlusion) and recording any luminal ulceration. In 59 of 66 bifurcations imaged by both techniques, the IV-DSA evaluation of any internal carotid artery origin disease was within one grade of the CA assessment, with three false negatives and four fals

Background Duplex ultrasonography (DUS) is readily available and often used as the first diagnostic test for patients with peripheral artery diseases (PADs). PAD is a disease that affects the general population but more commonly affects diabetics. To date, the role of DUS in the assessment of tibial vessel disease is inconclusive at best. The goal of our study is to assess the validity of DUS in characterizing the presence and severity of tibial diseases via comparison with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) findings. Methods This is a single-center retrospective cohort study analyzing thre

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis and nascent blood vessel formation is thought to be important in cerebral arteriovenous malformation (cAVM) development and maintenance, of which little is known. Digital subtraction angiogram (DSA) features of angiogenesis in cAVMs are poorly described and the aim of this study was to describe the frequency of angiogenesis in patients who had a DSA showing a cAVM. We also sought to evaluate the intra- and inter-observer agreement of a diagnosis of angiogenesis and explore which angioarchitectural features were associated with angiogenesis.
METHOD: Patients that under

A 27-year-old female patient suffered from recurrent episodes of dizziness, visual rotation, and intermittent right-hand numbness over one month. Symptoms persisted and were triggered by rotating the head to the right or left for more than 10 seconds. Neurological examination showed that the symptoms were most pronounced when the head was rotated over 45 degrees to the right. Dynamic digital subtraction angiography (dDSA) was performed to confirm the diagnosis. Leftward head rotation caused occlusion of the right vertebral artery(VA) . However, the symptoms were mild, owing to sufficient compe
