Epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) is a rare variant of angiomyolipoma found to have malignant potential and poorer prognosis. It is characterized by the predominance of epithelioid cells and frequent association with tuberous sclerosis. Its usual age of presentation is between the fourth and fifth decades of life, and only a single case has been reported in the pediatric age group. In this study, we report a case of epithelioid angiomyolipoma in a 4-year-old child with features of tuberous sclerosis, which is the youngest age of presentation.

Angiomyolipomas (AML) are mesenchymal tumors of the kidney consisting of varying proportions of vascular, immature smooth muscle and mature fat cells. A rare case of testicular AML is described. A 53 year old male with a history of congenital motor defects, mental retardation, and hypertension, presented to the emergency room with sudden onset, severe left testicular pain. Scrotal sonography demonstrated an hypoechoic mass in the patient's left testicle. The patient was offered and underwent a trans-inguinal exploration of the left testicle which ended in a left inguinal orchiectomy. Pathologi

Renal angiomyolipomas (AML) are benign tumors, which can acquire huge size and when bilateral, they are diagnostic of tuberous sclerosis (TS). Pulmonary lymphangiomyomatosis (LAM) is more common in female patients with TS and mostly diagnosed in patients with renal AMLs. We report a case of giant bilateral AMLs and pulmonary LAM in a 48-year-old female patient, who required nephrectomy for life-threatening hemorrhage.

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a well-characterized tumor composed of vascular, smooth muscle and adipose elements. Recently, AML with epithelial cysts (AMLEC) has been described as a cystic variant of AML. Herein is reported an AMLEC in a 55-year-old man, and to the authors' knowledge this is the first case report of AMLEC in Japan. He was referred to hospital because of microhematuria. A left renal tumor was noted and partial nephrectomy was performed. Histology indicated that the tumor was composed of epithelial cysts, compact subepithelial stroma and muscle-predominant AML. Immunohistochemically,

OBJECTIVES: To report on the role of simple enucleation for treating renal angiomyolipoma (AML) in a series of patients treated in our department.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of all 37 patients with a histopathological diagnosis of renal AML who had either radical nephrectomy (three) or nephron-sparing surgery by simple enucleation (34) between January 1986 and December 2005. Indications for intervention included either symptomatic AML or a tumour of >4 cm, regardless to the presence of symptoms or renal masses suspicious of malignancy. The patients' status was

Angiomyolipoma is a hamartomatous process that most frequently occurs as a single lesion or multiple foci in the kidneys of patients affected by tuberous sclerosis. Angiomyolipoma can also arise in extrarenal sites, among which the liver is the most frequently recorded. Only rare cases of angiomyolipoma located in the head and neck region (ear and oral and nasal cavity) have been described. The purpose of the present article is to report a case of angiomyolipoma of the parotid gland. A 68-year-old woman appeared for treatment with a slow-growing nodule located in her right parotid gland. Ultra

Renal angiomyolipomas are benign tumors composed of variable amounts of mature fat, smooth muscle, and thick-walled blood vessels. They occur either sporadically or in association with tuberous sclerosis. Such tumors are considered as hamartomas, but few data are available concerning their pathogenesis. Indeed, it is not known whether angiomyolipoma is a congenital malformation or a neoplastic process. To answer this question, we assessed the clonality of sporadic angiomyolipomas using molecular analysis. Seven women (mean age, 59 years) with renal angiomyolipomas were included. DNA of the tum

The diagnostic and therapeutic problems of renal hamartomas are illustrated by a case of recurrence of bleeding angiomyolipomas associated with tuberous sclerosis. Ultrasound and computed tomography provide clear evidence of lipomatous formation while, in rare instances, angiography can demonstrate the existence of multiple vascular tumor compartments. In view of the risk of bleeding, multiple or very large angiomyolipomas should be treated by interventional radiology in the form of superselective tumor embolization or by the most conservative surgery possible.

An asymptomatic 22-year-old female showed an enlarged mediastinal shadow in a chest X-ray mass screening. Computed tomogram indicated a tumor with a CT-number of 7-8 in her left anterior mediastinum, adjacent to the pericardium. With MRI the tumor showed a low signal intensity of T1 weighted images and a high signal intensity of T2 weighted images. Thoracotomy revealed that the tumor was yellow-whitish, and had a size of 7 x 7 x 1 cm. It was histologically composed of fatty tissue, smooth muscle, and vascular tissue, and was diagnosed as angiomyolipoma. Although angiomyolipomas are often found

The Authors present a case of extrarenal angiomyolipoma. The tumor arose from the pericolonic fat of the sigmoid colon and, increasing in size, caused intestinal obstruction by extrinsic lesion. Extrarenal angiomyolipoma is extremely rare and to our knowledge this is the first reported case arising from the colonic wall.

A case of renal angiomyolipoma with bone formation is reported. A 61-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with one month history of fever. About 15 cm in diameter mass was palpated in her right lower abdomen. Plain abdominal roentgenography, ultrasonography and computed tomography showed marked calcification in the cephalic portion of the right kidney, tumors surrounding right kidney and another tumor in the right lower abdomen. All these tumors and the kidney constituted a big mass continuously, and no fatty component was demonstrated. Total excision of the mass including the kidney wa

Hepatic epithelioid angiomyolipoma (HEAML) is a rare benign tumor in the liver. It is crucial to differentiate HEAML from hepatocellular carcinoma. We herein report the case of a 42-year-old female who was diagnosed with HEAML by multiple imaging studies. The histopathological examination also confirmed the diagnosis. Imaging studies include magnetic resonance imaging, digital subtraction angiography (DSA), and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (US). Typical image findings of HEAML by US include early drainage of hepatic veins, higher peak intensity, shorter time to peak on time-intensity curve, an

Angiomyolipoma is a mesenchymal tumor that originates predominantly from perivascular epithelioid cells and is generally considered benign. It is commonly found in the kidneys and rarely in extrarenal locations. Herein, we report a case of angiomyolipoma misdiagnosed as right adrenal angiomyolipoma. A 69-year-old male was diagnosed with a space-occupying lesion in the right adrenal gland. Preoperative abdominal computed tomography showed a 38 × 28-mm non-uniformly enhanced mass in the right adrenal gland. We performed laparoscopic resection of the right adrenal mass. The procedure was successf

Angiomyolipoma is an extremely rare, benign mesenchymal tumor of the nasal cavity, primarily common in the kidney and secondarily common in the liver. According to the author's knowledge, no cases of angiomyolipoma of the nasal septum have been identified to date. We report a case of a patient with a giant angiomyolipoma at the posterior end of the nasal septum who recovered after surgery without any complication.

Renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are a subset of perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms (PEComas) that are associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Epithelioid angiomyolipomas (EAMLs) are a rare variant of AML with more aggressive propensities. EAMLs with malignant potential can be difficult to distinguish from relatively benign AMLs and other renal tumors. Although there are no established criteria for predicting EAML malignancy, there are proposed histologic parameters that are associated with higher tumor risk. EAML can be treated with surgical resection as well as mTOR inhibitors. He
