Anhedonia and substance-related symptoms in detoxified substance-dependent subjects: a correlation study.

Anhedonia is a condition in which the capacity of experiencing pleasure is totally or partially lost, frequently occurring in mood disorders, as a negative symptom in schizophrenia, and in substance use disorders. In order to test a set of instruments for anhedonia in a population of detoxified opiate, alcohol and multiple substance-dependent subjects, 70 individuals were recruited from three different clinical settings. The following scales were applied: Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), Bech-Rafaelsen Melancholia Scale (BRMS), Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS), speci

Psilocybin for anhedonia in unipolar and bipolar depression: A systematic review of clinical and preclinical evidence.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia is a debilitating core feature of mood disorders, and is associated with significant functional impairment and poor quality of life. Psilocybin has recently emerged as a novel antidepressant treatment in major depressive disorder (MDD), however, its effects on anhedonia specifically have yet to be systematically reviewed. This review evaluates available clinical and pre-clinical research, exploring whether psilocybin influences anhedonia outcomes in pre-clinical and clinical studies. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted of PubMed and Ovid databases using search ter

The dynamics of loneliness: Longitudinal associations of anhedonia and dampening in a clinical sample of depressed individuals.

The longitudinal relationship between loneliness and depressive symptoms is well documented. However, few studies have considered the bidirectional relationship between loneliness and anhedonia, a cardinal symptom of depression. Moreover, the associations between temporal dynamics of loneliness and depression, and how dampening of positive affect may impact these associations, are under-examined. This study included a sample of clinically depressed individuals who completed baseline measures of dampening and depression, as well as ecological momentary assessments of loneliness and depression d

Association of anhedonia with brain-derived neurotrophic factor and oxidative stress in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) undergo depressed episodes, frequently characterized by anhedonia. Neurotrophic factors and oxidative stress are linked to anhedonia. The precise association between these biomarkers and anhedonia in individuals with BD remains unclear. This study primarily examined the potential relationships among brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and anhedonia in individuals with BD. METHODS: This study had 85 people diagnosed with bipolar disorder, of whom 61 exhibited depression symptoms. Additionally,

Association of increased grey matter with obsession and anhedonia in adolescent obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a severe psychiatric condition, but its neurodevelopmental origin remains understudied. Structural neuroimaging findings in adolescents are inconsistent and rarely linked to specific symptom dimensions, particularly anhedonia. METHODS: We conducted voxel-based morphometry to investigate grey matter volume (GMV) in 38 adolescents with OCD and 31 healthy controls (HC), supplemented by exploratory surface-based morphometry and medication-based subgroup analyses. Clinical assessments included the Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive Compuls

The Relationship between Emotional Expression, Difficulty in Emotion Regulation and Anhedonia in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD), a range of neuropsychiatric symptoms, including anhedonia, depression, emotional control, and cognitive deficits, may manifest. This study aims to investigate the impact of anhedonia, emotional regulation, and emotional expression on PD. The research included 68 PD patients and 60 healthy controls. Both groups were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Emotional Expression Scale (EES), the Short Form of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), and the Clinician-Administered Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), all administered

Characterizing the Profile of Anhedonia in Individuals With Schizotypal Traits, Subthreshold Depression and Autistic Traits.

Anhedonia is believed to be transdiagnostic symptom exist in various disorders including schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and autism spectrum disorder. However, very few studies attempted to profile subclinical samples with schizophrenia, depressive, and autistic symptoms using measures of anhedonia scales. This study adopted a cluster analytical approach to examine the anhedonia profile in 46 individuals with schizotypal trait (ST), 43 subthreshold depression (SD), 27 autistic trait (AT), and 41 healthy controls. They completed a set of checklists capturing different dimensions of an

Personality characteristics, not clinical symptoms, are associated with anhedonia in a community sample: A preliminary investigation.

Anhedonia is a salient transdiagnostic psychiatric symptom associated with increased illness severity and chronicity. Anhedonia is also present to varying degrees in non-clinical cohorts. Here, we sought to examine factors influencing expression of anhedonia. Participants (N = 335) were recruited through the Nathan Kline Institute-Rockland Sample, an initiative to deeply phenotype a large community sample across the lifespan. Utilizing a data-driven approach, we evaluated associations between anhedonia severity, indexed by Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), and 20 physical, developmental,

Altered neural mechanism of social reward anticipation in individuals with schizophrenia and social anhedonia.

Altered social reward anticipation could be found in schizophrenia (SCZ) patients and individuals with high levels of social anhedonia (SA). However, few research investigated the putative neural processing for altered social reward anticipation in these populations on the SCZ spectrum. This study aimed to examine the underlying neural mechanisms of social reward anticipation in these populations. Twenty-three SCZ patients and 17 healthy controls (HC), 37 SA individuals and 50 respective HCs completed the Social Incentive Delay (SID) imaging task while they were undertaking MRI brain scans. Shame in Response to Affective Expression and Its Relation to Social Anhedonia and Schizotypy Traits.

Schizotypy is marked by negative symptoms including blunted affect, social isolation, and social anhedonia. Contemporary personality theory suggests that maladaptive shame regulation may disrupt interpersonal function across personality disorders. We hypothesized that "affect shame"-a conditioned response of shame evoked by openly expressing emotions would co-occur with interpersonal deficits in schizotypy. As hypothesized, affect shame was associated with interpersonal deficits (r = 0.17, p < 0.001), physical anhedonia (r = 0.13, p = 0.001), and social anhedonia (r = 0.17, p = 0.001). The obs

Validation of a novel method of ultraviolet-induced cutaneous inflammation and its associations with anhedonia.

Affective immunology of the skin is a growing area; however, established protocols for measuring individual differences in cutaneous inflammation are lacking. To address this, we present a preliminary validation of Precision Implementation of Minimal Erythema Dose (PI-MED) testing as a method for measuring cutaneous inflammation. PI-MED is a recently adapted protocol, optimized for reproducibility and individual differences research, that uses ultraviolet (UV) light to evoke cutaneous erythema, or inflammatory skin reddening. PI-MED's novel UV dosage schedule produces standardized erythema res

Assessment of Anhedonia in Adults With and Without Mental Illness: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Anhedonia, a reduced capacity for pleasure, is described for many psychiatric and neurologic conditions. However, a decade after the Research Domain Criteria launch, whether anhedonia severity differs between diagnoses is still unclear. Reference values for hedonic capacity in healthy humans are also needed. OBJECTIVE: To generate and compare reference values for anhedonia levels in adults with and without mental illness. DATA SOURCES: Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar were used to list all articles from January 1, 1995 to July 2, 2019, citing the scale developme

Emotional disorder symptoms, anhedonia, and negative urgency as predictors of hedonic hunger in adolescents.

Affect and reward are associated with unhealthy eating and weight; however, less research has examined affective predictors of hedonic hunger (i.e., extreme reward responsivity, pleasure toward, and drive for food), particularly among adolescents. Whether symptoms indicative of emotional disturbance increase risk of adverse reward-based eating-related symptoms such as hedonic hunger, is unknown. Such evidence could explain why emotional problems increase risk of eating and weight problems among adolescents, when eating-related health problems often originate. This report examined baseline emot

The effect of enriched environment across ages: A study of anhedonia and BDNF gene induction.

Enriched environment treatment (EET) is a potential intervention for depression by inducing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). However, its age dependency remains unclear. We recently found that EET during early-life development (ED) was effective in increasing exploratory activity and anti-despair behavior, particularly in promoter IV-driven BDNF deficient mice (KIV), with the largest BDNF protein induction in the hippocampus and frontal cortex. Here, we further determined age dependency of EET effects on anhedonia and promoter-specific BDNF transcription, by using the sucrose preferen

Anhedonia as a phenotypic marker of familial transmission of polysubstance use trajectories across midadolescence.

Psychopathologic traits that arise in adolescence may increase proneness to substance use uptake as well as channel the familial transmission of substance use. Poly use is a common pattern of substance use in youth. To identify a parsimonious model of familial transmission of substance use, the current study tested whether anhedonia-a psychopathologic endophenotype manifested as the inability to experience pleasure-mediates the association of family history of substance use (FHS) with polysubstance use patterns across midadolescence. High school students (N = 3,392) in Los Angeles, CA, complet

Anhedonia and Abstinence as Predictors of the Subjective Pleasantness of Positive, Negative, and Smoking-Related Pictures.

INTRODUCTION: Anhedonia-diminished interest or pleasure in response to rewards-is a dimension implicated in several psychiatric disorders linked to smoking. This laboratory study sought to identify motivational mechanisms linking anhedonia and tobacco addiction by testing the hypothesis that anhedonia, abstinence, and their interaction would predict excesses and deficits in the perceived pleasantness of smoking-related and positive pictures, respectively. We assessed the pleasantness of negative pictures as a secondary outcome. METHODS: After a baseline session involving self-report measures

Evidence for the Discriminant Validity of the Revised Social Anhedonia Scale From Social Anxiety.

Social anhedonia and social anxiety are two constructs with similar behaviors including avoidance of and withdrawal from social situations. In three studies, the current research aimed to test whether social anhedonia could be discriminated from social anxiety using the most common measure of social anhedonia, the Revised Social Anhedonia Scale (RSAS). In Study 1, an item-level factor analysis of the RSAS found two factors: Social Apathy/Aversion and Social Withdrawal. In Study 2, this two-factor structure was confirmed in a separate sample. In Study 3, a model with social anhedonia and anxiet

Anhedonia, avolition, and anticipatory deficits: assessments in animals with relevance to the negative symptoms of schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia represents a complex, heterogeneous disorder characterized by several symptomatic domains that include positive and negative symptoms and cognitive deficits. Negative symptoms reflect a cluster of symptoms that remains therapeutically unresponsive to currently available medications. Therefore, the development of animal models that may contribute to the discovery of novel and efficacious treatment strategies is essential. An animal model consists of both an inducing condition or manipulation (i.e., independent variable) and an observable measure(s) (i.e., dependent variables) that

Reward-seeking behaviors moderate the association between early life adversity and anhedonia 12 months later.

Approximately 20% of adolescents report experiencing anhedonia, conferring high risk for the onset of adolescent depression. Early life adversity (ELA) is associated with anhedonia, and individual differences in reward motivation may inform this association. The current study examined whether reward-seeking behaviors moderated the prospective association between ELA and anhedonia 12-months later among adolescents. During a baseline visit, 74 participants, aged 11-17, completed the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) to measure reward-seeking behaviors via adjusted average balloon pumps. Indeed,
